Synopsis

Suffering from a terminal illness, Yuuta Itou's mother asks him to film her last moments, which he does. From her radiant smile when she is with her family to the times when sickness ravages her body in the hospital, he records hours upon hours of footage. After her passing, Yuuta compiles her life into a movie to screen at his school, deciding to add a bit of fantasy to the ending of his film, Dead Explosion Mother, with a literal explosion!

Following the backlash caused by his supposedly tone-deaf portrayal of his mother's death, Yuuta trudges to the hospital roof to take his own life—but there, he meets a girl named Eri. Captivated by his film, Eri requests Yuuta to make a new one that will blow the previous out of the water and prove his critics wrong. The movie they set out to make will stand apart by blurring the line between fact and fiction. And of course, it would not be a Yuuta film if it did not have his personal flavor—just a dash of fantasy.

It's one thing to have a masterpiece under your belt at any age. It's another thing to have multiple, and it's ANOTHER thing to have four of them back to back before you've even hit 30. I may be biased, but I really do think that Fujimoto-sensei has already set the gold standard for mangaka moving forward, and this oneshot is the perfect guide on how he does it.

This is absolutely ridiculous, can’t believe this shit is rated so highly. It tries way too hard to be “meta” but ends up feeling incredibly shallow. Everything it’s trying to convey - cherish time with your loved ones,” “don’t let others define you,” or “live life on your own terms” has been done countless times, and in much better ways. There’s nothing new or deep here; it’s all painfully obvious.

I expected something different or unique, but no, the characters just come off as trying to sound smart, like they’re these profound intellectuals, but to me, they just looked like they were high on drugs the ... whole time. (Maybe that’s just how the author draws, but honestly, every single character this guy draws looks like they’re on something heavy.). When characters are supposed to be having a heartfelt moment but look like they’re about to pass out from a bad trip, it really undercuts the whole experience.

And don’t even get me started on the ending. Was that supposed to be a joke? I get that it’s a short one shot story, but whatever message it wanted to convey was completely ruined by that ending and it was not a clever twist, not a subversion with purpose, just a cheap, meta ending that exists purely to catch the reader off guard. It doesn’t support the themes, doesn’t expand on the characters. It felt like the author wanted to do something different. It’s the kind of ending that thinks it’s being clever, but all it really does is pull the rug out for no reason.

The characters feel one-dimensional, like they were sketched out in a hurry with zero effort to add depth or personality. The writing seems aimed at people with short attention spans who get impressed by anything as long as there’s a sudden shock-factor moment thrown in. Instead of building even the smallest foundation, it relies on cheap twists to distract from how hollow everything is

And honestly, it's not complex at all. A truly complex story explores its ideas, gives the reader something to chew on, something philosophical to think about. This one just leaves you staring at the page wondering, ‘WTF did I just read?’ There's no weight, no meaning, just noise. It’s a pointless story. If you only want something that might catch you off guard but offers absolutely no substance, then sure, this is for you. But if you're looking for anything meaningful, anything with real depth or purpose, you’re going to have to look somewhere else.

So yeah, maybe it’s just me. Maybe this kind of storytelling resonates with people who are new to these themes, likes the style of this author or haven’t seen them done better elsewhere.

Girls Last Tour did everything better, the paneling, visual storytelling, characters and message. Everything is presented much better in that manga, not that they’re the same kind of story, not similar themes either but this just proves that two works can have similar ratings yet be miles apart in writing quality. This shit is just stylistic try hard unique yet shallow and forgettable.
