Synopsis

Guts, a former mercenary now known as the Black Swordsman, is out for revenge. After a tumultuous childhood, he finally finds someone he respects and believes he can trust, only to have everything fall apart when this person takes away everything important to Guts for the purpose of fulfilling his own desires. Now marked for death, Guts becomes condemned to a fate in which he is relentlessly pursued by demonic beings.

Setting out on a dreadful quest riddled with misfortune, Guts, armed with a massive sword and monstrous strength, will let nothing stop him, not even death itself, until he is finally able to take the head of the one who stripped him—and his loved one—of their humanity.

Background

Berserk won the Excellence Award at the sixth Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2002. As of August 2025, over 70 million copies of the manga are in circulation.

The series has been published in English by Dark Horse Comics since November 4, 2003. It has also been released in Argentina, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, México, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, and Turkey.

In May 2021, the author Kentaro Miura suddenly died at the age of 54. Chapter 364 of Berserk was published posthumously on September 10, 2021. Miura would often share details about the series' story with his childhood friend and fellow mangaka Kouji Mori. The series resumed on June 24, 2022, with Studio Gaga handling the art and Kouji Mori's supervision.

In my opinion, "Berserk" stands as one of the most powerful and deeply affecting manga ever created not merely because of its breathtakingly detailed artwork or its intense brutality, but because of the emotional and philosophical weight carried within its story. What makes "Berserk" unforgettable to me is the way it portrays a world drenched in violence, trauma, and despair, yet still manages to reveal a profound message about resilience, identity, and the human will to survive. At its core, "Berserk" is the story of Guts, a man who has every reason to fall apart but refuses to surrender, moving forward even when the world ...

The manga has very good art. On that alone, it would rate much higher than 6. For readers who like to sit and admire the art of each page, this manga might be a treasure trove. But for those with a quicker reading style who only glance at the art, don't expect to read the greatest manga of all time.

This manga is held back by its repetitive depictions of sexual abuse (SA). Opening a dark fantasy, a reader is prepared for terrible things like murder, torture, and SA. This manga has all three, but depicts SA eye-rollingly repetitively. When villains are introduced, they're shown ...

I get why Berserk is at the top of MAL's manga section, but it's really only because of the Golden Age arc. It's in the character development and outstanding writing. We get to see how the characters react to different developments in their lives (especially Griffith) and how their relationships and motivations change. Characters like Griffith are detestable, but they are completely understandable and even relatable. All the events that come to pass to culminate in the Eclipse make sense. It's legendary.

My biggest problem is with the portrayal of the female characters.
To start off, there's an evil group called the "God Hand," consisting of ...
