Synopsis

When Setsu's grandfather died, so did Setsu's "sound"—his unique creative spark. Grieving, he goes to Tokyo to find himself...but manages to become totally, literally lost on his first day. Only a chance meeting with Yuna—aka Yuka, the hostess—saves him from being robbed. At first glance their lives seem totally different, but they're both striving for their dreams—hers, of being an actress, and his, of developing his talent with the shamisen—and it could just be that life in the raucous, unfeeling urban sprawl of Tokyo could just be what binds their fates together...

Mashiro no Oto won the 36th Kodansha Manga Award in the Shounen category in 2012. In the same year, it won an Award for Excellence in the Manga category at the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival.

Honestly surprised by the low attention this has, but if you’re starved for more manga about creating and playing music then this is for you. Mashiro no Oto is about a young shamisen player whose grandfather was a unknown god in the shamisen space that never desired to break out (aka become popular). The manga has 3 main arcs, the beginning starts out slow with his passing and our MC running away from home trying to find his passion for playing again, which he finds through a school club and finding out he likes improvisation when playing.
