While Uzumaki starts off strong with its truly creepy first few chapters, it then loses everything that made those chapters great and becomes neither scary nor interesting. With the first chapters, even though the events that take place could obviously never happen, the author succeeds in making them believable. This is not the case for the majority of what follows, the plots become ridiculous to the point where the entire manga just doesn't work anymore. What is perhaps the scariest part of the manga after the first few chapters doesn't even come from the deeper, more psychological horror that is intended, but rather something that

Uzumaki is a collection of short stories that ultimately fails to deliver the horror it promises. It starts out well, but it swiftly loses its balance. The first couple of chapters are indeed eerie and engaging enough, but those that follow break all boundaries and tell only a most ludicrous tale. It's hard to keep suspending disbelief as the "story" unfolds and chaos engulfs the little town in which it takes place (though it is a collection of short tales, Uzumaki does have a main storyline and protagonists). Some moments are laughable, while others are plain absurd (hair, snails and flying, just to mention a

Uzumaki – Spoiler Free – Mixed Feelings
TLDR Overall: 6/10 Disclaimer: due to the nature of this work – a collection of short stories –, my normal parameters of Story, Art, Characters and Enjoyment with a weighted average won’t be applied. Instead, a global overview will be offered. Uzumaki is probably one of Junji Ito’s best works in his entire bibliography, with several adaptations. It is a collection of short stories with a common thread – the curse of omnipresent spirals of the small village of Kurouzu-cho. Spirals appear throughout the story in various shapes and forms – pun intended –, but only some of them are truly well ... Aug 19, 2020
Let's say this manga is a..... a hamburger! Yes. Now - when the meat is awesome, it's just awesome, right? But it has to work with the buns to actually make a GOOD hamburger. If the buns are average, dry - it will still work, but won't taste that good with that awesome patty. But just imagine adding soggy buns, which literally have no taste in them. And you add that fantastic patty between them. Will the hamburger taste good? Well, it depends. It depends if you still have your taste buds, or not. I think that I still have them, and that's why I

Uzumaki is a good choice for you if you're for a short manga that is sort of disturbing, but keep in mind that it falls short in a bunch of areas.
I'd like to start off by saying that Uzumaki has a great start, its early chapters are really good & they often display how obsessiveness can be a very toxic thing, chapters out of which you can draw out some interesting conclusions like, being obsessed with someone else will drag you into your own world with someone you don't even like, or being obsessed with a pattern can be the end of you and ... I need to address, that i don't like horror. In movies, in games, in anime, i always found it uninteresting. And for me Uzumaki started as a very good mangа with a lot of wasted potential later on
Story 5/10 The story started surprisingly intuiting. It was holding the attention and you felt craving for more and more. But with each chapter it made me angrier and angrier with it's unlogikly and stupidly progression. Who in their right mind will see how people turn into spirals and die, how your hair starts killing you, how your pregnant cuisine is trying to drink your blood and kill ... May 3, 2021
Very poor characterization and narrative. Very good mood and art.
There were panels that were genuinely unsettling, which is difficult to do considering how desensitized people are in the internet age. He also manages to do this in some instances without resorting to gore or sexual themes, which I have to compliment to his knowledge of the human psyche. Characters actions are an absolute mystery, its to the point where it is so unbelievable that it ruins ones enjoyment of this comic. Incredibly horrifying things are happening around our characters, and their reactions are so minimal that I found myself checking out from the dialogue to ... Nov 30, 2020
The art is beautiful and just nightmare fuel. I really cared about the main characters Kirie and Shuichi. Chie was a good character but was rushed and shoved into the plot. The story was disturbing, but I felt that there were too many plot holes. Some plot holes really didn't make sense and I felt cheated at times by the way characters unnaturally reacted to certain situations. I didn't like some of the choices taken and the creepy stuff that gets established but gets underused. One chapter out of nowhere turns into a shonen which caught me off guard. The manga is creepy, but the

I can't really give this manga a high score not because it isn't good but because I didn't enjoy it. I didn't enjoy it not because it's bad but because of the feeling it gave me after reading it.
Be ready to be disgusted and gross out with this manga and blurt out swear words multiple times. The story is quite unique I guess but there are parts of it that made me shake my head and laugh because of the absurdity of it. So if you're planning to read this, just don't make a mistake of eating food while reading, it's not really a good idea ... Jun 4, 2019
Uzumaki : Spiral into horror by Junto Ito
Without getting into too many spoilers; the manga features a seemingly normal highschool girl (Kirie Goshima) and her boyfriend (Shuichi Saito) in a small town in Japan. A relatively normal setting for todays standards. Set in the late 20th century the story starts with a normal day to school. As with all stories something odd needs to happen - a "spiral" obsession. It is through this some form of obsession that everything plays out like it does. The manga has a lot of philosophic standpoints and draws inspiration from common conflicts that may happen during school and other events. ... Aug 24, 2024
Some works unintentionally capture something deeper than the author seems to intend to. I am of the opinion that good horror confronts you with a true kind of evil. Great horror helps you know how to defeat the said evil. There is something deeper going on within Japanese society. On face value, the evils that consume a civilization or a culture are typically in the urban centers, and they are usually tied to abandonment of traditional ways of living and understanding. This one presents us with a different kind of problem. This I think makes it worth talking about, as it's work that comes from

The manga is about the characters of a city getting obssessed and taken over by spirals. And it starts small, take over one person at a time and then keeps cranking that shit up till it gets sadistic. The manga is about about a city being enveloped by spirals.
The story follows our FMC with her boyfriend the MMC. We basically follow these 2 characters throughout the movie. The MMC actually notices the oddities with the spirals and tries the FMC but she doesn't listen even after witnessing a lot of crazy shit. Why you ask? So the manga can happen of course. So basically overtime lots ... Feb 26, 2017
So basically, the people of this town are seriously mentally ill, because of a shape gone mad/viral.
you know that one mind numbingly stupid girl who always dies first in the horror movies, because of her level of stupidity or otherwise? this manga is FULL of characters like that. It makes not much sense. I read it yesterday, and I promptly watched something else afterwards, to try and forget it. The story went up, then down, then back to the beginning again. nothing went right. in summary, if you want to read something awful, and scary, and disgusting, just for kicks, then this is ... This is probably one of few manga reviews I'm gonna write and a first one, since I really wanted to say opinion about Horror manga like Uzumaki.
In my eyes, this manga had quite the potential with mystery surrounding the plot and kinda likable characters but decided to waste everything with badly done chapters and often forgetfulness of how horror works. The plot of Uzumaki can be perfectly described in one word: confusing. It starts of truly interesting with some very interesting dialogue and other great ideas for horror. But as the chapters progress, oh boy does the dissapointment keep getting bigger and bigger. The ... Nov 20, 2022
I started to get into Junji Ito's works recently so Uzumaki was on the very top of my list so I got the 3 in 1 volumes special edition and read it all in one afternoon.
It is now it's near the bottom... Positives first, the art work is god tier. From the perspective work to the little details, this must have taken ages to complete. Sometimes I'd pause just to admire a particular panel it's so beautiful. On that front this manga is an 11/10. I often hear people complain about Ito's characters. To me they are more like the ones you see in the twilight ... Mar 25, 2024
I have to be honest, I wasn`t that impressed with the ending. But this always happens because when something is so iconic and over-hyped you expect a life-changing experience almost. At one point the manga started to lose the plot. And the ending is rushed without a good explanation as to why all of that happened. It is just blamed on the curse without any origin, reason, or pattern. All in all a lot of plot holes were there, that would have made the story aaaa loooot better. The art in the manga is amazing, no doubt about that. You can read it just for

GOOD BITS: The art is breathtaking. Junji Itou really knows how to draw.
The horror can be really quite scary and unsettling. Some chapters are difficult to get through, but that's coming from someone who hasn't experienced much horror. Some of the mini-stories are fantastic, and most are at least serviceable. They are all exciting and quick to get through. Without spoiling anything, the ending is very effective at making you feel what the characters do, and is arguably the best part of the whole thing. The concept is absolutely fantastic, so simple yet effective, it really isn't like anything that came before or has come after. BAD BITS: ... Oct 28, 2024
I wasn't really interested in reading this, but a review recommended reading this before watching the anime, and I'm glad I did.
§ Overview The story starts with Goshima Kirie going on her way until she finds her boyfriend's father observing something. This bloke has been obsessed with spirals. Kirie's boyfriend, Saitou Shuuichi, feels something is amiss in this town, which he calls the curse of the spiral. Eventually, his father dies and a series of horrors plague this town. § Remarks It starts as an agonising read until it hooks you. The so-called horror starts out as creepy, i.e. strange phenomena happen, until several chapters later, you're ... Nov 23, 2023
I personally dont get why this is considered a horror. Maybe its hard to translate fear from imagery and text but i found it more a kin to oddities / mystery. Nothing to outstanding but overall a decent read. My first introduction to Junji Ito works and i'll say its not a masterpiece , but it sure as hell aint bad. My main gripe is i dont find it "horror" like which is why i decided to try to give it a read. so slightly disappointed by the actual tone of the book ,not disappointed with the read itself.
There were a few events that the ... Nov 30, 2022
This manga WILL gross you out, the art was my favorite part of the manga. The "horror", not so much and I am going to respectfully put this down as the author's idea of what horror is, not matching mine. Some people are into gross-outs and body horror, and I think they will enjoy it but I just never had the creepy, terrifying feeling that I look for in a horror.
The first couple of chapters really pulled me in as they focused on someone's obsession and the supernatural was present, but hadn't taken the center stage just yet. But once it started going in ... |
