Story - All I knew when I started this manga was that 'Tomie' was a woman who could make men fall madly in love with her at first sight. As you can imagine, I wasn't really expecting much and was very impressed by what I read. I loved every chapter and felt they were all very original and well thought out to how each 'Tomie' manipulated and charmed each character in the manga which eventually ends in her own demise.
Art - As the other review has mentioned, the one strength to this anime is that Tomie is truely beautifully drawn in the manga with her

I had read Junji Itou's 'Uzumaki' around two years ago and was impressed by his creativity at horror storytelling because it actually made me freak out (which rarely happens to me while reading horror manga). And that was one reason why I picked up 'Tomie' nearly two years later. The other reason was, well, I wanted to pass my time.
When I read the plot, I was excited and expected it to be as scary and thrilling as 'Uzumaki' was, or if possible, more than that. However, it turned out to be a bit of disappoint for me by the time I reached the 6th ... Sep 17, 2015
Tomie is one of my favorite manga, so ill try not to be as biased.
Now before you start reading Tomie, beware that its intended for adults only since it depicts extremely graphic scenes. There isnt really a main Story, there are some minor and major arcs, there is one character, Tomie, that always reappears in each of the different stories though. Each story has something that makes it interesting in its own with different kinds of side-characters being impacted differently by the main character. It's hard trying to explain the story without spoiling so if this review wakes your interest you should definitely check it ... Nov 6, 2018
tomie has an amazing artwork, as you'd expect from junji ito. i think that's actually the biggest value of the manga, you see tomie pictures everywhere on the net and it became a classic "yes i'm an edgy tumblr girl who likes japanese horror art ok?" symbol (myself included). people are getting tattoos of her because she looks so beautiful and mysterious. ironically that's what tomie and her story is about, possessing people and making them love her so it's cool to see that her presence is reaching out into the real world. i read the manga pretty much in one session and i admit

ALERT!!! BRAZILIAN REFERENCES ABOARD!!!
Tomie was seen in Liberdade's São Paulo... Tomie is the typical girl who goes out at night to Liberdade to trick nerds and step on them, I'm sure it would be like that if she were from São Paulo '-' She is a girl who breaks the hearts of poor boys where she would appear on Cidade Alerta every week being a victim of jealousy from some random guy... In addition to her beauty, Tomie is almost a goddess (because she can multiply herself), but even with all the men being hypnotized by her, she cannot be satisfied, always wanting to break more hearts. I never ... Oct 18, 2020
This was pogs. The art is amazing and actually made me feel scared and uneasy sometimes. Ito's art will never fail to amaze you. The story was pretty good to. Although i sometimes wish it delve a bit more deep into Tomie's past a little. so much mystery behind her. characters were some what ok. Loved the main character and I especially loved Tomie as well. There were some downsides though. some characters were meh and some you'd practically wouldn't have gave a shit about. And I do wish Ito delve a bit more deeper into the lore of Tomie. there were a lot of

"Tomie" by Junji Ito is a psychological horror masterpiece delving into the depths of obsession and immortality. The complexity of the narrative and the unpredictable plot twists add depth to the story, keeping readers intrigued. The detailed artwork, although occasionally confusing in action scenes, creates an authentically chilling atmosphere. The intentional confusion in the story may pose a challenge for some readers, but it contributes to the overall sense of disconcertion. "Tomie" is a captivating read for those who appreciate horror that defies expectations, although both the artwork and the narrative may require careful reading to be fully appreciated.
At first, I found the chapters confusing ... Feb 16, 2025
Tomie is the story about a succubus, who charms men into falling in love with her, only for those same men to brutally murder her, making her lose her memories and repeating the process with the next victim.
If that doesn't catch your attention then I don't know what will. Tomie is just really cool, she gets into the most weird situations and has no idea why she does half the things she ends up doing. As Junji Ito writes mostly short stories, which are usually entirely separate from one another, Tomie's adventures are not really connected most of the time, yet the cycle repeats and ... Tomie, by Junji Ito is a pretty interesting story about an immortal succubus who constantly gets herself killed by men. She is always reincarnated as "Tomie" and seeking out men like a predator. Throughout the story you find out more and more about Tomie and how she works, she gets into strange situations and the resolution is always interesting.
The fairly bland story is held up by the beautiful (and freaky) art of Junji Ito, despite the bland story it is surprisingly entertaining. For a nearly 800 page manga I read it quickly and was never bored. I do recommend Tomie if you enjoy horror, if you're ... Nov 16, 2023
Not that I would say it's my favorite piece of work from Junji Ito, but one of them at least. Tomie is the first piece of work from Junji Ito sensei that I actually got to read and understand what it's truly all about. I mean, I randomly saw a short clip of Tomie popping up on my Twitter feed one day, and I got interested, so I started watching and catching up with it pretty quickly. Tomie isn't just a good horror manga that you need to read, but in the general world of horror, it's one of the best pieces of work that

I really liked this. I'm not one to be scared that easily, but even some of the panels surprised me a lot, and I liked the ending.
I liked the fact that we literally know nothing about Tomie, except that she gets men to go crazy over her, and make them kill her, she can regenerate, and do a lot of creepy things, but that's it. We don't know her upbringing, origin, or how she works; we don't even know who or how the first Tomie came into existence. It's all a mystery, and I really like that; it makes it more creepy. Another thing I ... May 15, 2022
The female character with the most haunting superpower? Yes, that's what I thought when I heard about this manga series by Itto. The stories are quite unrelated but I don't know why, in a way I feel like I'm being hypnotized by Tomie. The characters in the story are obsessed with her, and so am I. It's monstrous, this feeling is quite real. Obviously Tomie is the type of character that can directly affect the reader's brain, and not all manga characters can do it believe me. Whatever happens to Tomie, I believe that if she were real, she would rule the whole earth. Tomie

Junji Ito, not at his best, but definitely at his most solid, consistent and disturbing.
The story explores the clear-cut story of Tomie, or two, maybe three sometimes, it's a wild ride through what I thought was just a simple one-shot at the start, but no, it goes hard on following 1 theme, 1 set of rules that even if you can't really get your head around the most important ones and then the most abstract ones, you get a feel for how it works. The first stories (Chapters) try to set a number of guidelines for how the horror works, how the horror will happen ... Sep 12, 2024
Tomie is a story of a beautiful girl that's irresistible to men. She smells nice, looks beautiful, and she can get men to do whatever she wants them to do. She drives them mad, and they end up slaughtering her.
Tomie struggled a bit with the art at the beginning. It was hard to tell what the plot was or what was going on. As the story went on, the art got much better. There were some freaky and disturbing panels, connecting to the theme. The theme being the irresistible nature of Tomie. A femme fatale that ... Feb 2, 2025
-Tommie short review.-
One of the most famous manga by Junji Ito, Tommie is, for the most part, a set of one-chapter, short, independent stories that are only connected by the presence of the monster?, ghost?, alien?, experiment?, god????????? named Tommie. There are, however, a bunch of chapters (2 -3 , 4 - 6 , 18 -20) that are connected and form three different arcs that form distinct larger storylines (although each arc is independent from one another). What’s interesting about Tommie is that, while these are a bunch of separate stories, each one gives us more information on how Tommie works and plays with the concept ... May 30, 2020
Without a doubt, this is the best horror manga I've read.
The story is splendid start to finish, being made up of different times in the lifes of Tomie. As for the art, I feel like it deserves more than a mere 10. Even if in the beginning it is not very readable, or even good for that matter. you can see Junji Ito's development and how he gets better and better at character design and at making Tomie the beautifully crazy girl she is. Not to mention, he has been my inspiration for art for a long time now. The characters are also very good, ... Jan 18, 2018
Sounds so obscure for a book that includes this type of horrific depictions, but i ended up reading this within two public train journeys back and forth. Genuinely it was so immensely interesting that i was so enamoured and focused with this book that I nearly missed my stop.
I would seriously recommend this book to any of my friends, even if they're not a fan of manga or anything Japanese, cause it seriously feels like it's so much more than just that. I damn loved it, and having the hard-back of the book made it so much more satisfying to read and have on display ... |
