    AccessWorld #23 - Guiding Our Way into the Future

    In this month’s episode of AccessWorld, a podcast on digital inclusion and accessibility, Aaron and Tony kick it old school by reflecting on the impact of one of the first real breakthroughs in mobility and independence, the guide dog.  September is Guide Dog Awareness Month, and while these friendly furry helpers are more organic than robotic, the same spirit and undercurrent around mobility and navigation is surfacing again much in the way it did almost a century ago when Morris Frank, a blind insurance salesman, helped found The Seeing Eye, the first guide dog school in the western hemisphere. It all started after he read an article in The Saturday Evening Post titled: “The seeing eye.” Harnessing the spirit people had after reading that article, Tony and Aaron try to think what the next big thing might be for independence.     In this episode of AccessWorld, we look back at 35 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Aaron shares what it was like growing up only knowing about the ADA, while Tony reminisces on what life was like before the landmark legislation for people with disabilities became law. They talk about how the law made our physical world more accessible, and what’s had to happen since then to change attitudes and chart how accessibility eventually grew into the digital space. They also break down their frustrations with accessible solutions for hotel elevators, questioning how reasonable existing accommodations are for travelers who have their patience tested whenever confronted with the wide range of solutions for touchscreen displays. Aaron dives into some of his recent blog posts around the major OS developer events, and Tony gives a shout out to AFB’s Public Policy and Research Institute’s new AI survey for users with and without disabilities.     AccessWorld #19 -- Celebrating GAAD with Gemini and Dreams of Our Future

    Welcome back to another episode of AccessWorld, a podcast on digital inclusion and accessibility. As we prepare to celebrate Global Accessibility awareness day, we thought it would be great to look into the future of accessibility, welcoming our special guest to the podcast Gemini, Google’s AI platform, whcih gives us a glimpse into the power AI has toward making the world around us more accessible.  Aaron and Tony take time to talk with Gemini on its latest update to provide image and real world description in real time (Editor’s Note: the version used in this episode is still in beta, so some of the lag times were edited out for brevity). The conversation serves as a launch pad to discuss how AI is already tackling tasks that three years ago seemed like light years ago in a galaxy far, far, away.     AccessWorld #18 -- Connecting Dots with Dr. Joshua Miele
