The Redistricting GameA Virginia judge allowed the state’s Democrats to pursue a redistricting plan on Wednesday that would permit them to amend the state’s constitution and redraw its congressional districts before next year’s midterm elections – despite a lawsuit from Virginia Republicans. Those Democrats are following a national trend, kicked off by President Trump. Back in August, Trump called on Texas to redraw its congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterms in order to minimize Republican losses in the House. And after Texas redrew its maps, California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom responded by putting forward a plan to redistrict his state through a ballot measure, Proposition 50, that would redraw California’s congressional districts and push five Republicans out of their seats. Californians will be voting on the proposition on Election Day next week. To explain the fight and how the 2026 Midterms became a battle royale, I spoke with John Bisognano. He’s the President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. And in headlines, Congress continues to prove pointless as funding for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits are set to expire for millions of Americans, the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates again, and immigration officials deport a man living in Alabama to Laos despite literally being ordered not to. The Wall Street Journal reports rates are now at their lowest in three years. The Chicago Tribune’s Jason Meisner discusses how a judge in Chicago ordered the CBP commander leading operations in the city to report to court daily to brief on the use of force — an order that was paused just before the first check-in. Police in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, carried out the largest raid against a drug gang in the city’s history, leaving at least 132 dead. AFP reports the action drew swift condemnation. Plus, a new report suggests how much health-care costs could be about to rise for millions of people, Jamaica begins to assess damage from Hurricane Melissa, and how a new book by Dr. Seuss was discovered. Correction: On Tuesday, CBP Commander Gregory Bovino was ordered by a federal judge to brief her daily on immigration-enforcement efforts in Chicago. A previous version of this episode stated that Bovino gave his first of those briefings on Wednesday. In fact, he had not yet delivered one before an appeals court on Wednesday paused the judge’s order. Additionally, the number of unfilled Target jobs has been corrected. Casey Means: A MAHA leader, and the next surgeon general?Casey Means faces lawmakers on Thursday, as they vet her nomination for the nation’s top medical post: the U.S. surgeon general. Means has been a prominent critic of the medical establishment. She could soon be put in a position to change it. Means, 38, resigned from her final year of medical residency to become a health products entrepreneur, a popular online personality with a best-selling book about “Good Energy,” and a leading figure in the “Make America Healthy Again” movement. Critics say she has a history of saying things in potentially misleading and scientifically inaccurate ways.
