Foreshadowing the Equinox Boy

 Looking up video sleeves of late I saw this one for the early monster movie Equinox on Mountain video and thought, hmm, I've seen that boy's posture before. 

It's this diver on the Warren Eerie cover #3.

Similar? It's the hand that does it for me.

I wonder which came first?

Lunar Sparkling Space Gun

 This ray gun by Larami has an interesting backing card.  The art looks like a gallery of actual space paintings. They're hard to see.

Does anyone know what they are?

DUNGEONS AND ADD-ONS

Being a heavy rock fan I couldn't help noticing the box art on this modern role playing game, Dungeon Crawl Classics #94: Neon Knights by Goodman Games.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery and I suppose recreating on of the most important heavy rock albums' cover art is exceptionally flattering. Its obvious that Neon Knights has lifted the outstretched demon arms from Black Sabbath's famous Sabbath Bloody Sabbath cover created by famous artist Drew Struzan [who went on to do Star Wars posters]; you can read more about Drew on Decibel]

Getting even more from Neon Knights here are related images from its parent game, Dungeon Crawl Classics.

The rear picture is a gem. I love this wild warrior with his stripy heavy metal flares extra tight around the loins! Eat your heart out Ozzy!

The contents page rings a bell. That monochrome drawing style says Prince Valiant or similar. I like it.

The Wizard page has similar black and white artwork, signed by Peter Mullen, I've seen this type of side art before, little panels of sword and sorcery. Maybe on White Dwarf?

F-111 Copycat Art

The post on the Telsalda Swing Wing toy was most interesting. The version shown was called the Royal Navy Swing Wing Strike-Fighter, and the box top depicted two aircraft in different colour schemes, but both with Royal Navy titles on the forward fuselage.

That art work has been bothering me. It has the look of a kit box top, and the fact that two different versions of the same aircraft are depicted just seemed odd. So I went looking. This is what I found.

The real General Dynamics F-111, originally called the TFX - Tactical Fighter Experimental, was intended for both the US Air Force and Navy. That idea did not work out, and the Navy model was cancelled. The F-111 was the first aircraft to enter service with swing-wings, the angle of swept could be varied in flight.

In the early days of the F-111 programme, most of the big US kit companies produced kits of the type, some offering optional parts for both the Air Force and Navy versions.

The Revell kit in 1/72nd scale came out in 1966, and it had parts for both versions. The box top painting showed the Air Force version in a tactical camouflage scheme, with the Navy model in the standard USN finish of white and light grey.

The Telsalda box art (also used on the SL version of the same toy) is a modified copy of the original Revell box top. This painting was by Jack Leynnwood, who did many boxes for Revell. The two aircraft were shown flying over a desert airfield, and carry full US markings.

The Telsalda art changes the background; deletes the US markings on the aircraft; and adds Royal Navy titles, but not British roundels. Otherwise, it is the same artwork. This painting is shown in the book Box Top Air Power, which I reviewed a little while ago.

WHITE DWARF COVERS: MONSTER LIFTS

I was intrigued by these old White Dwarf covers I saw online. 

I only ever owned one or two White Dwarfs and they were really early issues before colour art covers came in like these.

What struck me about these three is the art lifted from other sources, so I'll have a g at ID'ing them, which is always fun.

This cover from 1979 is clearly Wolfman, but is it lifted from elsewhere? I'll leave that one for readers if you fancy having a bash?

Turning to this cover I had thought it was from an Eerie or a Creepy comic by Warren but alas its not. Does anyone know if this was used somewhere else?

This final one from 1980 I do know. I read a paperback by Mark Ronson called the Ghoul a few years back with the same cover. Its from 1980 too!

IN ARM'S WAY: THE MASTER CARD

 Looking at the crazy Arm's Master car art again I've been wondering about those two running space figures bottom left.

Here they a little closer.

They rang a bell.

They made me think of another toy's box art, Alien Attack by Toyco.

There's a couple of running - or at least moving - spacemen bottom left.

Looking at them close-up they're not the same but it was fun checking!

So, all the components of the Arm's Master card art remain a mystery still.

The strange metal orb with arms, the spaceship below the Enterprise, the runners and the circular portraits.

Any ideas or are they original ideas from the artist?

SELECCION TERROR: LIFTED HORROR ILLUSTRATIONS

Seleccion Terror was a Spanish pulp issued in the 1960's. Many of the stories were written by the prolific Clark Carrados. Clark Carrados was an alias of Luis Garcia Lecha. It must have been great collecting them.

As with many cheap pulp publications Terror lifted some previous illustrations for use on its own garish and attention-grabbing covers. Some look do original though - just google Seleccion Terror. I'm unsure of the Terror artists but here are a few lifted Terror covers and what I think are their possible origins and a few mysteries you could help with too!
