REAGAN'S BONES - Demo - Tape - 2005

I was going to try something different today. I started uploading a split tape between two quieter singers that I like, but then the stereo ate and completely mangled the cassette. The quarter-inch tape was fucked up beyond repair, so I took the cassette out and nailed it to my wall. Next, I started uploading a newer experimental noise tape of mostly local bands, but my computer just stopped digitizing it about halfway through. Instead of either of those tapes, you get more punk...ugly, fucked up, drunken, blown out punk.
REAGAN'S BONES were most likely born in a fucked up trailer in Woodfin, NC while swilling ass-loads of cheap booze and eating dumpstered pizzas. They were fronted by Potato, who is one of the sweetest punks you could ever hope to meet. Other members of the band have spent time in QUEERWULF, THE MORONS, BLOOD SUMMER, PRINCESS THUNDERSTORM, A.O.A. and many, many more. I don't remember if I've ever seen this band unless they played in the blur of 12 bands in a falling apart house in St Louis during that one time when all the punks met there. I don't know. This tape is good and I think this grocery store receipt from their insert will tell you everything you need to know about this band.

If you live in the Bay Area and want a copy of the band's self-released 7", there's 20-25 of them lurking around Thrillhouse Records.

EVERYTHING WENT PINK - Compilation - Tape - 2000

"Everything Went Pink" is a tape that was released by Dan B back in 2000 that specifically covered the DIY punk scene in Asheville, NC, which was mostly centered around a giant punk house called the Pink House (located at/near 201 Broadway...it's now either a parking lot or condos.) It was kind of a magical time in the history of that town. A whole bunch of freaks happened to converge on the town all at once, from Minneapolis, New Orleans, California, Montreal and even the suburbs of Buncombe County. Some lived in cold-ass houses in Woodfin. Other lived in makeshift shacks out by the freeway (like everyone in MARGARET MOTHER OF THIEVES). Many others, including myself, lived in the Pink House, right in the middle of all the chaos. The house itself was kind of a freak magnet since it was a giant two-story pink place, the door was almost always unlocked, it housed a teeming library and it welcomed just about anyone who walked through the door. The landlord was a member of CRASH WORSHIP and he could often be found smoking weed by the toxic creek in our back yard. I'm pretty sure that, at one point, 17 people were living in the house.
There was a time when there was almost nowhere for DIY punk bands to play in town, so a bunch of folks from the house decided to clear out piles of the landlord's bikes and crap in the basement to make their own show space. There was a big problem though. Raw sewage and toxic creek water leaked straight into the basement, right into the area where bands would play. No problem...a group of punks (namely Joseph, Big Mike and Ed....possibly Luke too) built a retaining wall / ditch all the way through the basement and bored a hole though the back wall so that water could drain out though ANOTHER drainage ditch into the toxic creek! Thus, the punk club, Oh My! was born. Every time a band played there, the audience ran the risk of falling into the shitty toxic trough and the band ran the risk of getting a huge electrical shock! Still, it was the best place for shows and it's where I saw many life-changing events.

Most of the songs on this tape were recorded live on a handheld tape recorder at Oh My! Others were recorded at clubs in town, other houses and shacks. Most of the sound quality could be described as "assy", but I respect that the bands worked with what they had, which was almost nothing. Lots of bands on this tape don't have any other recordings. Many do. You can try and differentiate that distinction for yourself. Bands include WAR TORN BABIES, CRAP FACTORY, ASTRID OTO, RAT ATTACK, CHRIST FILTHY DOGS (which I've been wanting to re-use as a band name for years), DEAD THINGS, TRASH NIGHT and more. There's 43 songs in all. Enjoy or don't.

Did I upload this just to have digital copies of SLATTER HAGS and the final song on the tape? Possibly, but don't tell anybody.
Tape hiss abounds. Terrible sound quality. Totally beautiful.

DEAD THINGS - Demo - Tape - 2001

Before DEAD THINGS, there was PINK COLLAR JOBS, who were a punk band of college students from Boone, NC back in the 90's. After that band dissolved, Jason and Lynn (the core songwriters) moved down to Asheville and started rounding up people for a new band. I feel like they asked me to play drums in this band, but I'm glad they got Lil' Mike instead because he is such a better drummer than me. He even went to school for drumming. Seriously, I went in his house one day and he was practicing African drumming on a fucking bongo or something. I swear, it sounded awesome and I didn't think for one second that he was a hippie or anything. The guy loved (loves) playing drums. Where was I? Oh yeah, they also got Big Mike to play the bass. He had formerly played in ASTRID OTO and CRAP FACTORY. He also had the benefit of being insanely nice, which fit in with the rest of the band and made them one of the nicest bands I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Despite their pleasantness, all of their songs sound so pissed! What were they pissed about? Rent, lack of insulation (seriously, Asheville winters are somehow the coldest ever because the houses aren't built for it), school, total bullshit, etc, etc...the usual...but they belted it out with talent and style.
If you can track down this band's album (only on CD) from a year later, do it. It is excellent. Until then, enjoy this raspy, poorly recorded 15 minutes of punk from the south.

SICARII - Unreleased Stuff - 2005

No art. No fanfare. Today's entry is submitted and written by my good friend, Alex Turner....

SICARII was a punk / anarchist band in Olympia, WA in the early 2000's. This is a recording they did after they all ended up in Asheville, NC in the mid-2000's. It was never released. Jay-Ro recorded it and I think somebody moved away before they got around to finishing the mix of everything. They are still some of my best friends; people I fly around the country to visit. This band reminds me of the positive aspects of the fucked up punk houses we all lived in. As they say, "It was the best of times / It was the worst of times." So much love. So much coffee. So many bagels and soy dogs. Too much beer. "Accident Prone" on repeat, a rat population that drove us to drink more, OP IVY dance parties, time spent around the wood stove...you get the idea. Regardless, this recording was made after all that. They reformed for a year or so in Asheville. I was never in town to see them as a North Carolina band, but this recording shouldn't be lost. The LP that came out when they were an Olympia band is good and if you're paying attention, you can still find one (There is one new [???] copy at Thrillhouse for $6.)

Eli lives in Northhampton and takes care of his cute-as-fuck kid, Asa. Parker is in a black metal band who's name escapes me.

TENT CITY ROLLERS - Demo - Tape - 2010

TENT CITY ROLLERS were around for a very short time and I never saw them because I lived 3000 miles away from 'em. The members had played in such sonically disparate bands as TULSAELECTRIC DAMNJACUZZI SUICIDE and KAKISTOCRACY, but came together to form this melodic punk band that sounded somewhat like a melding of the first two (and nothing like the last two).
That's all I've got, really. I like this tape a lot, even though none of the members believe me. Some of these songs have been shipped off to other bands, along with the members. You can find them doing time these days in DARK RIDES, YES MA'AM and FLIES AROUND IT.

GROUCH - "Fuck The World As Soon As Possible" - Tape - 2009

I met Kyle when he came out to visit his girlfriend (my roommate at the time), Kyle in SF. The next time I saw him, he was the roadie for my band on tour for a few weeks. On that tour, we played with his band, GROUCH in Asheville, North Carolina. Solely based on his tendency to listen to metal in the van, I decided that GROUCH was a hardcore/metal band and I used their set time to catch up with old friends in the driveway of the house we played at. Within their first two songs, I was deep into a conversation outside about dead friends...one of those conversations where you can't just say "Oh, hold on a sec...this band sounds sick as fuk and I have to watch them." So, yeah, I figured out quickly that GROUCH was not a metal band and they were, in fact, playing exactly the kind of southern-influenced, hook-filled, melodic punk that I love more than anything...but I missed every single second of their set. It was my loss.
GROUCH could easily be defined as simply "melodic punk", but that statement can be pretty loaded and tends to turn people off from listening. You know there's something else going on when the band members love listening to IRON MAIDEN, SLAYER, MOTORHEAD and GISM and somehow incorporate it into their songwriting in the most subtle ways. GROUCH is a step above most other melodic punk in the sense that you can tell they really mean it...they're cramming tons of hooks into each song and play with passion. Unfortunately, all they left in the world is this one treble-y demo tape. The band soon broke up as both Kyle and their drummer, Henderson moved westward to the Bay Area and Portland, respectively.
These days, Kyle plays guitar and sings in NEON PISS, He also plays drums in the awesomeness known as DISPLEASURE. Henderson was the former drummer of SHOREBIRDS. His new band, REMAIN INDOORS was supposed to play a show with my band in Portland last week, but they broke up before that could happen. At least they recorded an awesome tape before disbanding (p.s. I need that tape.). Bassist, Chris has graciously let me borrow his bass almost every time I have been in Asheville to play music and he now plays in the long running band, KLS...a band that has been around for longer than he has been alive.

WAR TORN BABIES - Rough Mix Demo - Tape - 1999

I moved to Asheville, NC for a short time back in 1999 and lived in a huge, dilapidated, musty, drafty, pink punk house on the edge of downtown. There was a library on the main floor, a screen printing set-up, couches for drunk crusties to sleep on, a couple of shacks in the backyard, 15 roommates, a show space in the basement and the landlord was one of the guys from CRASH WORSHIP. I was kind of obsessed with an old Asheville band called EXCESSIVE DEFIANCE and I usually listened to them every day when I woke up. Someone told me that I should listen to WAR TORN BABIES, which carried on the legacy of E.D.'s simple, noisy barrage of crust. I asked a couple of friends about them and soon found out that two of my roommates were in that band. Soon enough, they were playing a show in the basement.
They started up with a distorted, fucked up bass tone and crashed haphazardly into their first song. I didn't get it. Everyone was dancing and singing along, but I felt out of place on the sidelines. Their drummer was possibly older than me, but played the same way that I did when I was 13. Each of their songs seemed to fall apart, but no one cared. Everyone just danced harder and sang louder. Then, it hit me. I began their set thinking that that they had no idea what they were doing, but then I realized that they knew exactly what they were doing. All of their songs were primal, plodding, visceral, simple and working towards an easily memorable chorus that you could sing along with the first time that you heard it. It dawned on me that this band was genius and by the end of their set, I was up front, fists in the air, singing along to "Dancing On The Ruins Of Multinational Corporations!!!"
As far as I know, WAR TORN BABIES never released anything...I don't even think they ever got around to releasing this tape, but I could be wrong since I moved away from Asheville and lost touch. All I know is that they (probably) recorded this tape at UNCA in Asheville and then their guitarist, Ed left it in my room. Did it ever get mixed, mastered and released? Until we find out, here is this rough mix of their stuff at it's most primal and raw.
Both photos by Chrissie at the Pink House in Asheville.

Some might think that a band might not want their unmixed recording out there for people to consume, but I asked their singer Mikki if it was okay and she said "DO IT!!" Speaking of Mikki, she now runs a bar called the Get Down, that is  the best place to play shows in Asheville these days. They are going through some rough financial times at the moment, so if you want to donate money to them, it would be very appreciated. It's run by some great people, they have an awesome sound system and their politics are rock solid. You can find more info about them here or you can make a donation straight to them on their Paypal page.

BLACK LUNG BRASS BAND - Vol II - Tape - 2003

My band played a show with the BLACK LUNG BRASS BAND back in 2003 in Chattanooga. I wasn't sure what to expect. I wasn't even sure if they were a brass band. What if they were just one of those annoying ironic bands like BLACK LADIES...a band that does not have that literal element in their band?Well, it turns out that they were a brass band and they were also my friends from Asheville. Luckily, none of them had black lung. They all piled out (all 11 or 12 of them, clown-car style) of a truck and started pulling all of their instruments out of a tangled mess in their trailer. When they took the stage (well, the room actually...there was no stage), they were a loud, blasting force to be reckoned with. They sounded like a loud-ass, multidisciplinary brass band. I mean, what else can I tell you? You either like this kind of stuff or you don't.
A year later, I convinced my friend, Sarah Monster to drive down to Louisville, KY to see them play in a park. I was sure that there would be a million people there and it would be really cool. There was more like 10 people there and the show was awkward and weird, but the BLACK LUNG BRASS BAND was great. I found out that they had 3 days off before they needed to be in Chicago, so I convinced them to come stay at my house and play a show in Bloomington. We all left separately that night and made plans to meet up at my house in Indiana. Twenty minutes into the drive, Sarah and I noticed that the weather was beginning to look insanely ominous...dark clouds, high winds, a high-pitched whine. I knew from my years of growing up in the deep south that we needed to get into a ditch or risk being sucked up into a tornado. Oddly, we were driving through the town of Floyd's Knob and Sarah exclaimed, "I have family here!" To make a long story short, we made it to her relative's house and got to see some trees being blown over. It was the pre-cell phone days for most of us still, so I was worried about the brass band. I found out later that they pulled over at a motel, got free rooms from the family who lived there and rescued a stray dog from the storm.
Let me get to the point. I bought their tape and it was great. I was listening to it while screening shirts and getting ready for tour. I let side two keep running after the music was done because I was busy. After a few minutes of silence, I heard the beautiful strains of a solo piano and got excited. A hidden track! The next few minutes were spent in awe. I must have rewound the tape and listened to that song 5 times in a row while the ink for my shirts was drying in the screen. I laid on the floor and smiled. Seriously, even if you don't give a fuck about this kind of music, I highly recommend that you download this for the last song. It's one of my favorite things ever.
As far as the track listing goes, it's all over the place. When I put this in to digitize it, the tape broke!! I realized that Crab Jackson had put this on a tape for me years ago, so I digitized that one...but the song titles don't match up and...it's a long story. Don't worry about the titles. I think this is a great band..beautiful people. True freaks.

BOMB THREAT - Demo - Tape - 2001

This tape has been kickin' around on my shelf for years and I can't remember how I got it because I never saw this band...I mean they were my friends...They probably just gave it to me one day and I don't remember. That's not the important part. The important part is that these songs rule and you will want to hear them if you have even the slightest interest in scrappy southern hardcore and great, energetic punk. Some of the songs fly by at 100 mph with a trade off of female/male vocals that may remind you of PINK COLLAR JOBS. That would be an astute observation since one of the singer/guitarists used to be in that band. They recorded this demo in the dank-ass basement at 38 Mulberry in Woodfin, NC, possibly amid a pile of empty 40 bottles and dog shit. This band existed roughly from 2000-2002 and got to see the world changing dramatically around them as towers were falling and bombs started dropping. I'm not just saying this for effect...it actually sounds like they were informed by the world falling apart around them.
Lynn was probably playing in 5 other bands at the same time as this band and went on to play in NASTY PONIES. Blair is currently working on his brain-bending and phenomenal artwork as he always has. He was doing that before I ever met him...which was about 18 years ago. You can (and should) check out his stuff right here. Their drummer, Jason was and still is (?) playing in the long-running southern hardcore/crust band KAKISTOCRACY. I'm not sure what is up with their bass player, Kyanne, but she was always doing interesting and cool things, so I'm sure that hasn't changed.

Thanks to Blair Menace for the cover art, pictures, extra info and for being a friend for all these years, despite everything.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - "Fuck the East Bay, This is N.O.K." - CD - 1997

I helped to put out this CD in 1997 on the Nation Of Kids (hence "N.O.K.") label out of Huntsville,AL. It started off as a split CD between the band I was in, JOEY TAMPON AND THE TOXIC SHOCKS, and our friends, PINK COLLAR JOBS, from North Carolina. CD's were still a new novelty to us at the time and we weren't used to having so much time to work with, so there was a lot of it left over after our collection of songs. So, we decided to fill up the extra space with a sampler of current punk bands from the Huntsville area so that they could get more exposure when we took the CD on tour with us.
TOXIC SHOCKS playing an 8 year old's birthday party in St Mary's GA. 1995. No shit! Picture by Harry.
JOEY TAMPON AND THE TOXIC SHOCKS was a horribly moniker-ed band that I played in for 2-3 years with my friends Joey and Neil (both formerly of CHEESE ASS CHRIST). We had put out one 7" and toured extensively around the southeastern US at this point. Joey was getting kinda bored with the band at this time and it really shows on the recording. I mean, he wasn't a good guitarist or singer by any stretch of the imagination, but he usually made up for his lack of talent with an extra helping of vitriol, charisma, sarcasm and for lack of a better word, oomph. On this recording, it just wasn't really there. The first eight songs were recorded in a small little box of a studio, 20 miles from the town where we lived. (as a sidenote, I think this was the time that I was driving out to the studio to record and my car broke down, so I ditched it and hitchhiked the rest of the way...still made it on time.) The guy recording us did a really good job of making my bass drum sound like a cardboard box. The last three songs by us were recorded on a reel-to-reel four track in my bedroom on the corner of Dement and Ward in Huntsville. I guess it's easy for one to get upset or embarrassed about their old band, so just take a listen and judge for yourself. I still think our 7" is better. Soon after this CD came out, Joey told me "I don't have anything important to say anymore. I'm just gonna start a surf band." Then, we broke up.

PINK COLLAR JOBS at the Jesus Saves Space in Boone NC. 1996. Photo by me.
PINK COLLAR JOBS, on the other hand, was on top of their game and kind of the polar opposite of us. Their songs covered political issues, feminism and monetary excess. They were our favorite band at that time and we were completely honored to put something out with them. They re-recorded most of the songs from their demo tape for this release and included a newer song as well, called "Society's Disease or Yours?". Joey was bummed that they didn't re-record the other remaining songs from their demo, so he included them on the CD. I'm not even sure if he asked them if it was okay.Oh well, they're great songs and this is the only more widely available stuff they put out besides their split 7" with RUSTWEILER. You should track that down as well so that you can see why PCJ was one of the best underrated bands of the 90's.
PCJ playing at Gorin's in Huntsville. 1997. Photo by Ramesh.
The compilation part of the CD starts off with a ridiculous intro by Joey and then kicks into two great songs by 565 BURNOUTS, who were also one of my favorites at that time. The songs were taken straight from their demo tape, which you can find right here, along with more info about them.
Next up is THE PEEPS, Huntsville's most loved (but unfortunately, not only) ska-punk band. They were around for a good number of years, but I only ever really liked their demo tape (which I don't have...if anyone wants to donate that for download, it would be appreciated). A LOT of people in Huntsville liked this band a whole bunch. If you don't believe me, someone actually made a full length documentary about them, which I have never seen and have no links for, Even though, I didn't like them much, they were always a fun live band and I played drums for them at two shows. Members went on to be in PROPERTY (see below), PINE HILL HAINTSAGAINST ME! and ,uh, SOUL CRACKERS.
Following THE PEEPS is PROPERTY, who might have been the towns longest running punk band at the time besides RANDOM CONFLICT (see below). I think PROPERTY formed when most of the members were in high school and one of them was still in middle school. They always told me that they were just about to put out a record, but they never did. Besides this CD, they only appeared on some tapes and a comp 7". I think they were probably too busy chain-smoking and skating to get it together to release a record of their own. I loved them when they were around.
I've already told you about SHITBOY FROM OUTERSPACE before. This recording is from after their singer Joey (Tampon) either quit or got kicked out of the band and Jason (guitarist) became the sole songwriter. At this point, it seemed like he was just trying to push people's buttons with "edgy" topics. Thus, you get songs like "I Wanna Be Japanese" and "Brooke's Got DSL", which is not about the internet...and that' all I'm gonna say about that.
Next up is THE JAWAS with a song off of their 2nd 7". I'm not really sure what else I could possibly tell you about this band, since I already wrote a whole entry about them..I can tell you that even though we were putting together this CD at the same studio where they recorded their record, we still got their song for this comp straight off of their record instead of using their master tapes. Why? I don't fuckin' know. You can even hear that someone bumped into the record player within the first 30 seconds of the song. A huge disservice to a great band.
Following them is THE SLACKERS, who were defunct by this time, but these two songs were still laying around. THE SLACKERS were punk as fuck and one of my favorite live bands when they were having a good night. Both of these songs are great and you should expect to hear more about them on this blog in the near future.
RANDOM CONFLICT closes out the comp with their song "10%". They were actually the longest running band in town at this point. They started in 1987 as a crossover metal band (If anyone doesn't want their first 7" from '87, I will give it a good home) and went through a lot of different phases, but kept their boots firmly planted in hardcore punk the whole time. This song catches them in a pretty solid hardcore/street punk phase and they usually put on a good live show. The crazy thing is that they ARE STILL A BAND and play shows all the time. Just for fun, here is a video of them playing their hit "Cyanide Nazi Race" at an insane gig at the Armory in Huntsville in 1990.

MARGARET MOTHER OF THIEVES - Tape - 1999

I believe that MARGARET MOTHER OF THIEVES started in either Asheville or Minneapolis, but I can't be sure. The first time that I saw them was at one of the best shows that I have ever been to. It was in the basement of a big old punk house on the edge of downtown Asheville and MARGARET MOTHER OF THIEVES opened up the show on a bill that also included TEM EYOS KI, THEUSAISAMONSTER, ANTI-PRODUCT and SUBMISSION HOLD. Everyone in this band lived in homemade shacks out in the woods and their lifestyle was more DIY than most of the people who spoke the loudest about that kind of stuff. Naomi played a violin and a cello that she built from a guitar neck bolted (or taped) to a crutch. I think they also built one of their guitar amps. They played a style of music that I can only compare to a more rudimentary DOG FACED HERMANS, WIRE (if they were low-budget and no-wave) or the members' other bands, like COUNTY Z, IMPRACTICAL COCKPIT and GROUP B. It was urgent, tight yet retaining loose qualities in the right places and open to improvisation.

Like many great bands, MARGARET MOTHER OF THIEVES crashed and burned early on and all we're left with is this tape. The members of this band went on to form the aforementioned COUNTY Z and IMPRACTICAL COCKPIT Currently, the members of this band are spread out from Maine to California and they are playing music in MOTHER OF FIREVILLAGE OF SPACES CORNERS and more. All of it is worth tracking down. I miss this band more than a lot of other defunct bands.

RESURRECTUM - CDR - 2002

RESURRECTUM was around for a little while in the early '00's, growling their metallic, bullet-belted asses off about topics such as consent, fucked up wars and , you know, Satan. I think I remember them referring to themselves as a metal band, but they weren't afraid to jump headlong into fast-as-shit-double-bass thrash every once in a while. They drew their influences from IRON MAIDEN and possibly TEM EYOS KI. I'm not the kind of person who would normally play air guitar to a band, but I have been known to dabble a little with RESURRECTUM if that tells you anything. I always liked their live show more than this CD, but can i bring back their maniac sneers and glares? Can I bring back the piercing, live dual guitar solos? Can I bring back the warehouses full of drunk, dread-mulletted crusties waving around 40's while pumping their fists and headbanging? No, I can't...but I can share this Cd with you and you can get the idea.

PINK COLLAR JOBS - "They're All The Same" - Tape - 1996

PINK COLLAR JOBS were the first (and last) band I ever played with in the beautiful mountains of  Boone, NC. These four unassuming, overly friendly college students fed my band and made us feel at home in their college apartments. Then, when they got behind the mics and plugged the guitars in, they became our new favorite band; screaming about politics and who-knows-what (you try and decipher these lyrics without a lyric sheet). That little show in a tiny little attic (called the "Jesus Saves Space"...jokey..they were not Christians) spawned some friendships that last to this day. I threw this tape in my tape deck and it stayed there for months. Once, on tour, someone broke out the window of our tour vehicle and only stole the PINK COLLAR JOBS and JOAN JETT tapes, even though all of our equipment and band money was sitting there in plain view.
"Pennsylvania" is a sorta simple anthem that will play on repeat somewhere in the back of my mind until the day I die. It's been there since '96 and it's not going anywhere. "Without Your Spine" is flawlessly flawed in a totally beautiful way and I still can't believe that Lynn can scream all the words to that song that fast without puking.
Members of this band went on to play in DEAD THINGS, NASTY PONIES,  and a slew of others including a brass band that I do not know the name of.
Put this on and remember that NO ONE could afford a good recording in the 90's. No one good, anyway.
