Something Else Wicked Also Comes This Way

For Privateer Press Grymkin commission, I also made a few buildings. These were based on the existing structures on their city table, but broken open and overgrown with creepy trees.

Iron Kingdoms RPG Conversions (Ogrun)

The Reports of my Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

The run up to convention season is always busy. I have been spending so much time hunched over my work table that I haven't had time to write about anything. I'll be making up for it in the coming weeks with some really cool terrain to show you. My goal is to hit 50 posts each year, so I'll have to sneak in some semiweekly posts to make up for the missed weeks.

In addition to the new terrain, I'll have some other things I've been meaning to share, such as what I listen to while I work, and reviews of some different washes I've tried in my never-ending search for a classic GW Brown Ink replacement. And my Terrorgheist is still eying me angrily from its perch on the work-in-progress shelf...

First, I want to show off some conversions that I did for No Quarter Magazine #49. Now that it's finally in stores (and I have a moment to breathe), I can put up the pictures. Check out the magazine for the full step-by-step tutorials.

Ogrun Intellectual Bounty Hunter/ Ranger

The term "intellectual bounty hunter" always makes me chuckle; I picture Dengar in a smoking jacket with a masters degree framed on the wall behind him. Gudrun has the appearance of a ranger, and with some spare parts he fits the bounty hunter bill quite nicely. A little sculpting was necessary to transform his chain mail tunic into a jeather jerkin, but the rest of the conversion utilizes simple weapon swaps.

Parts List:

Gudrun the Wanderer

Trollkin Mercs Trooper #1 Axe Haft

Revenant Crew Pirate Arms/ Cutlass

Yuri the Axe Traps

Yuri the Axe Axe

Ogrun Skilled Pistoleer/ Soldier

The Ogrun Bokur makes the perfect model for a soldier. I imagine this guy fighting alongside Cygnaran Trenchers to earn a living. On the weekend he meets up with his buddies in town to haggle over the price of magic bullets, monocles, and +1 broadswords. Then, if there's still time before the session ends for the night, they might take on a quest.

Parts List:

x2 Farrow Brigands Right Arm/ Pig Iron #2

Okoru Hargrosh Right Arm/ Pistol

Bokur Body

Ogrun Assault Corps Head (Monocle)

Ogrun Assault Corps #3 Arm

Bokur Shoulder Pad Sprue

Ogrun Mighty Labor Korune/ Field Mechanik

This turned out to be my favorite of the bunch. Very minimal sculpting on this guy, just mixing and matching a lot of different parts to create something new, which is what I love most about conversions.

Parts List:

Ogrun Assault Corps#2 Body

Ogrun Assault Corps #2 Axe

Ogrun Assault Corps Head (Goggles On)

Ogrun Assault Corps #2 Gun

Road Hog Backpack

Thunderhead Tube #2

Man-O-War Kovnik Axe Cannon

Battle Mechanik Officer Tools

Battle Mechanik Officer Left Arm

Iron Kingdoms RPG Conversions (Gobbers)

No Quarter Magazine #47 has been on the shelves for a few weeks, and it features part three in the IK RPG conversion series. This one shows how to convert Warmachine and Hordes models into a variety of Gobber character archetypes. Here's the finished models and parts lists. Check out No Quarter for the step-by-step tutorials.

Gobber Field Mechanik/ Soldier

The gobber from the Cygnar Field Mechanik unit was a pretty easy conversion. It's just an arm swap for the Trencher Commando's weapon hand. The arm itself is brass wire, with putty sculpted overtop. The gun hand also needed a little work to beef it up to match the scale of his other hand. The tricorn hat is made from putty, and replaces the model's original, floppy hat.

Parts List:

Field Mechanik Goblin Bodger #2

Trencher Commando Grunt #3 Left Arm (Gun)

Mk 2 Trenchers Backpack

Gobber Duelist/ Cutthroat

This guy's not a gobber at all, but a dwarf. Sculpted on the Rhulic IK model Maulgrun Boldridge, this conversion is a simple arm and head swap The main sculpting is on the sleeve, hand, and scarf. The dueling sword came from a Legion of Everblight Hex Hunter.

Parts List:

Maulgrun Boldridge Body

Hex Hunters Grunt #3 Sword

Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew Gunner Head

Gobber Alchemist/ Thief

This last guy is my favorite, and I wasn't sure if I'd be able to pull off the conversion. The body is the IK model Gajun Vasco, with his limbs cut away and replaced with wire armatures and resculpted. I imagined this guy as a mini Gorman Di Wolfe, throwing open his cloak to reveal an array of knives and alchemical grenades. The gas mask is inspired by Puck's mask from the Bodgers line. If this conversion didn't work, my fallback idea for the Alchemist/ Thief would have been to use Reinholdt as the base model.

Parts List:

Gajan Vasco

Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew Gunner Head

Durgen Madhammer Grenades

Iron Kingdoms RPG Conversions (Mechaniks)

No Quarter Magazine #45 came out this week, and has the second in a series of articles about converting Warmachine and Hordes models into Iron Kingdoms RPG characters.

This time, it's variations on the mechanik character class. Check out No Quarter for the step by step tutorials. Here's how the finished models turned out:

Trollkin Field Mechanik/ Soldier

Bull, from the Mercenary pair Dannon Blythe & Bull is a great model for conversion because both of his arm joins are right at the sleeve, making arm swaps a breeze. The Khadoran Battle Mechanik Officer has some great bits, which I've used in almost all of these conversions.

Parts List:

Bull Body

Trollkin Scout w/ Hood Axe Arm

Trollkin Scout Leader Left Arm

Battle Mechanik Officer Left Arm

2010 Butcher Gun

Vassal Mechanik Pack

Battle Mechanik Officer Tools & Head

Human Arcane Mechanik/ Priest

This guy was really challenging. I think I tried every Flameguard Cleanser model before settling on the unit attachment officer. I also wasn't sure if I could pull off the "arcane" theme without him looking like just another Cygnar model or a Protectorate priest, but I think the parts and color scheme go a long way to distinguishing him as part of a unique sect. Of all the conversions I've ever done, this is one of my favorites.

Parts List:

Flameguard Cleanser Officer Body

Battle Mechanik Officer Tools & Head

Flameguard Cleanser Officer Head

General Adept Nemo Right Arm

General Adept Nemo Staff

Captain Arlan Strangewayes Wrench

General Adept Nemo Boiler

Exemplar Errants Scabbard

Thunderhead Tube #2

Mechanik's Steamjack

And since mechaniks can be accompanied by steamjacks, here's a conversion of a patchwork 'jack. I think the the Cygnar Grenadier head matches the Buccaneer torso perfectly, and maybe even looks better than its original head.

Parts List:

Buccaneer Torso

Grenadier Head

Reckoner Right Leg

Reckoner Left Leg

Lancer Right Arm/ War Spear

Vanguard Left Arm

Reckoner Condemner Shield

Vassal Mechanik Pack

Iron Kingdoms RPG Conversions

One of the projects I've been working on these past months is a series of articles for No Quarter Magazine featuring Iron Kingdoms RPG character archetype conversions. The first article is out this week in No Quarter #44, and features combinations of the Gun Mage character class.

Now that the magazine is on the shelves, I can finally show off the miniatures. For the step-by-step assembly tutorials, check out No Quarter Magazine, issue 44.

Human Gun Mage/ Rifleman

This guy is armed with a magelock rifle, and wearing an armored great coat. The armor plates were sculpted around the base of the coat, and the figure was created with pretty basic head and weapon swaps.

Parts List:

Widowmaker Trooper #2

Kara Sloan Gun

Gun Mage Captain Adept Left Hand

Hammerfall Highshield Gun Corps Head #2

Iosian Gun Mage/ Duelist

She's probably the most complex of the conversions. The holsters and shoulder cape are sculpted with modeling putty. The magelock pistols she's equipped with came from Epic Caine, cut at the elbow, and the upper arms are sculpted over a wire armature.

Parts List:

Mage Hunter Assassin Alternate Body

Mage Hunter Assassin Alternate Leg

Epic Caine's Left Arm

Epic Caine's Right Arm

Venators Sword

Rhulic Gunslinger/ Bounty Hunter

Very minimal sculpting on this one. The original head had a welder's mask that needed to be removed, and the goggles and hair were added instead.

Parts List:

Hammerfall Highshield Gun Corps Body #2

Hammerfall High Shield Gun Corps Right Arm #3

Thor Steinhammer Head

Drake MacBain Gun Arm

Drake MacBain Sword Arm

Greylord Ternion Koldun Axe

Horgenhold Forge Guard Backpack

I'll have another batch of these when the next issue comes out.
