Mikoo is the brainchild of Slovakian drummer/composer Michaela Antalová, based in Oslo since 2015. Together with vocalist Ina Sagstuen, guitarist Fredrik Rasten, keyboardist Vojtech Prochazka, and bassist Magnus Nergaard, they form Mikoo, an experimental indieband making boundary-pushing, accessible music that mixes song form with personal, instrumental explorations.
“It Floats” is their second album and is a result of over four years of studio work, editing and shaping the music over a long period of time. The songs on the album has their own unique origin and development process, ranging from structured compositions to more spontaneous collective improvisations. The band members have different backgrounds, from just-intonation tuning minimal compostion, to various folk music, as well as indie, noise and rock music. Mikoo manages to find a personal signature in between these diverse musical sources.
The lyrics, written by vocalist Ina Sagstuen, revolve around the theme of inheritance — both personal and collective. They explore how traditions, traumas, emotions, and patterns are passed down through generations, through bloodlines and cultural history. Several of the songs deal with inner turmoil and identity crises — the feeling of losing yourself, of alienation, and the struggle to regain a sense of balance. A distinctly feminist and existential perspective emerges, particularly in the portrayal of female resilience, emotional depth, and the historical framing of women’s experiences — such as hysteria or witchcraft — and how those echoes still resonate today.
The record comes in a 6-panel digipack with beautiful design by Stephen O’Malley, with artwork by American artist Dorothy Hood.
