Black Tambourine

Black Tambourine were a four-piece indie pop band from Washington, DC that were initially around from 1989 to 1992. They took influence from bands such as The Jesus and Mary Chain, Beat Happening, The Vaselines, and My Bloody Valentine. Black Tambourine crafted simple, cheery songs with 60's pop sensibilities and added twangy guitars slathered in reverb and distortion. During their initial incarnation, they only put out two singles and a few compilation tracks. That small output would prove to be immensely influential, as their noisy, lo-fi sound, and sweet, airy vocals became staples of twee, dream and indie pop as a whole.

Their legacy was cemented on a compilation released in 1999, titled Complete Recordings. This was a widely-circulated discography, as their actual 7"'s had become hard to find. The title is slightly misleading, as it didn't include all of their recordings. In 2010, another discography was put out to replace the previous one. This new one ncluded the same tracklist as Complete Recordings, in addition to six additional songs. The band reconvened in 2009 to record four new tracks that they used to play live but never recorded. The new songs included two originals and covers of "Heartbeat" by Buddy Holly and the classic "Dream Baby Dream" by Suicide. These four songs were included on the 2010 discography, along with two previously unreleased demos. Two years after that, they released a newly-recorded EP of Ramones covers in celebration of the 20th anniversary of singer Pam Berry's magazine Chickfactor

It's been a few years since I've listened to this band. Revisiting them is a fantastic reminder of how irresistibly charming these songs are, and how clear their influence can be heard in so many bands from the past decade or so. Enjoy.

My Bloody Valentine

Post 900. It's been almost two years since 800, and despite my inactivity we made it through another 100. Thus, another milestone band is required to honour this. Not only that, but 900 posts means we are obligated to make it to 1000, which will hopefully not take another two years to get to. As always, thanks to anyone still sticking around after all these years, this band probably doesn't need any introduction but we'll do a quick one anyway. Enjoy.

My Bloody Valentine are a four-piece band from Dublin, Ireland that began in 1983. They are best known for creating the template for shoegaze, a genre marked by heavy distortion, reverb, glide guitar, and quiet, low-in-the-mix vocals. This is mostly credited to the release of their seminal 1991 album Loveless, an absolute classic and landmark album that has proved to be infinitely influential to this date. This is not to discredit their work prior and after it, which we'll get into into now.

MBV (as they shall be known henceforth) was started by guitarist/vocalist Kevin Shields and drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig, who would both remain consistent members of the band. They were joined by a revolving door of band members early on, with the other notable one being vocalist David Conway, who appeared on their first few releases. Their early sound was a mix of post-punk and gothic rock, with a clear nod to the punk rock sound they had played in bands prior to this one. Bassist Debbie Googe joined in 1985, and became an essential member to this day.

They quickly evolved and started playing with a jangly twee/dream pop sound, especially around the release of Strawberry Wine and Ecstasy. These were the first releases to feature Conway's replacement, new guitarist/vocalist Bilinda Butcher, whose hushed vocals and added guitar layer became instrumental in defining MBV's classic sound. Under the influence of The Jesus and Mary Chain, who had recently released their own landmark albums Psychocandy and Darklands, MBV's final form began to take shape. With their line-up solidified, they began crafting pop songs buried beneath guitars lathered in effects and feedback. They also started incorporating their seminal "glide guitar" technique (bending the whammy bar as a chord is strummed). 1988 brought both the You Made Me Realise EP and their debut LP Isn't Anything, both absolute essentials to their discography. Though it can be overshadowed by the monolith of Loveless, their debut is still an absolute staple in the development of shoegaze, with some of their best songs on it that blur the line between pop and experimental music.

The Glider and Tremolo EP's were released in 1990 and 1991 respectively, and can be seen as stepping stones to the finished product of Loveless, even including songs that would later appear on the LP. The sound they have become renowned for clearly takes shape here, with the reverb and distortion being turned up, and the vocal mix being turned down. Finally, after a relentless two-year recording process that allegedly nearly bankrupt their label, Loveless was released on November 4, 1991. There aren't many genres that have an undisputed crown jewel the way that shoegaze has Loveless. That's not to discount albums like Slowdive's Souvlaki or Ride's Nowhere, which are incredible in their own right. It's just that no other album has quite captured the same fervor and legacy that MBV's sophomore release did. I could go on about the heavenly euphoria this album exudes, how listening to it feels like being wrapped up in a warm dream, its cosmic elation of euphoria, its auditory perfection, etc. It's been told a thousand times with a thousand metaphors. It's an experience to say the least, and an album I find myself returning to time and time again just to submerge myself in its 50 minutes of bliss. There is not a misstep on it, and its critical praise and fan regard is every bit deserved.

Following the release and tour of Loveless, the band signed to Island Records to work on their follow-up. Despite multiple recording sessions, that material was all scrapped. By 1997, MBV had virtually dissolved, with Cíosóig and Googe leaving the band, and Shields becoming somewhat of a recluse (though he did contribute to the soundtrack of Lost in Translation). In 2008, the core four members reunited and began touring again. In 2012, their two LP's were remastered and re-released, along with a compilation that included all their EP's from their Creation Records years, in addition to other previously released and unreleased tracks from that era. A year later, 22 years since Loveless, they released their long-awaited follow-up album, m b v. This consisted of some material recorded prior to their breakup in 1997, as well as new material from as early as 2006. Despite the huge gaps in time during its recording, this album flows flawlessly. The band did the unthinkable and culled together an album that served to further their legacy as titans of their genre. with another one of the best releases in its respective decade. Since then they have been fairly quiet, with talk of a fourth album coming up. Considering their release history, I wouldn't get my hopes up for it until at least 2035, but we'll see.

MBV are without a doubt one of the most essential bands ever posted, so I do hope you find something to take away from here. As I said previously, they are a massively well-known and popular band so most people are more than likely already familiar with them. If you are, I encourage you to continue revisiting them (especially their earlier work, which is often overlooked). For the few that might not be, I implore you to give them a listen. Again, thanks for numero 900, and I'll see you at 1000.

Sea Oleena

Sea Oleena is a lo-fi indie/dream pop project created by Charlotte Loseth, who is based out of Montreal, Quebec. Between two mini-albums and one full-length, Charlotte's established an ethereal atmosphere, full of gentle vocals and layered instrumentation that's so textured and reverberated that it often draws comparisons to shoegaze. Sonically, Sea Oleena crafts the type of music that evokes a sense of floating in a half-asleep haze, with clouds as cushions and a euphoric aimless drift. Or something like that. Basically, Charlotte is an incredible musician who utilizes subtle details to create massive landscapes of sound, which are still quiet and soothing. As far as comparisons go, Grouper shares a similar atmosphere, though Sea Oleena's songwriting is a bit more structured and instrumentally defined. If you're looking for some very relaxing, euphoric, atmospheric music, I cannot recommend Sea Oleena enough. Enjoy.

LSD And The Search For God

Like Pinkshinyultrablast last month, here's another band who disappeared for a few years and then suddenly re-emerged with a new album. There's just a much bigger gap this time, and their first EP is easily one of the most renowned in the past decade of its genre.

LSD And The Search For God are a seven-piece shoegaze/dream pop band from San Francisco, California that formed in 2005. After some extensive touring, they released a five-song self-titled EP in 2007, which quickly developed a reputation over the following years. It's dreamy atmosphere is the closest thing to euphoria that doesn't involve a pill or an orgasm. The tones and textures of the guitars ebb and flow like paint on a palate, and add a unique blend of colour to the male-female vocal harmonies that float through each of these songs. The obvious namedrop comparisons are there (see: My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, etc.), though LSD And The Search For God really managed to craft an EP that featured influence, but not derivation. Thus why it's held in such high regard, because it managed to define a genre that all too often falls into the death trap of carbon copy sound alikes.

After some rigid touring and numerous "will they won't they" moments, LSD finally released their follow-up EP, Heaven Is a Place in January of this year, nine years after their debut. The band essentially picks up where they left off, with some slicker production and some poppier elements. Though perhaps not as monumental as their debut, LSD certainly delivers a respectable follow-up album. Overall, LSD And The Search For God are a solid band for anyone looking for shoegaze music that is not straight out of the Creation Records roster, or just looking for a more modern take on the genre. Either way, that first EP is a must, and the second a solid response of fresh songs. Enjoy.

Pinkshinyultrablast

Pinkshinyultrablast are a five-piece shoegaze band from St. Petersburg, Russia that formed in 2007. I just found out they put an album out last year that I somehow completely missed, and have another new album coming out this month. This is mind-blowing since their debut EP is easily one of my favourite shoegaze releases in the past handful of years. I can't recommend it enough. It's got all the melody you'd expect, from the faint vocals to the clean, chorus and reverb-soaked guitars, and even all-out blasts of distortion to coat the shimmers of melody. All the obvious influences are in the mix, such as Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, Lush, Ride, you know the names. Happy Songs For Happy Zombies isn't reinventing any wheels, but it's definitely got an amazing motion to it. I cannot recommend enough to any fan of shoegaze, especially those who think the genre begins and ends with Loveless and Souvlaki, and anything after the turn of the century is irrelevant. I'm incredibly excited to give the album a listen, and just wanted to quickly throw a post up about them, so enjoy.

Camera Shy

Camera Shy are a two-piece dream pop/indie rock band from Oakland, California that formed in 2014. They got started by Nick Bassett, who was already known as being a member of Whirr, Nothing, Death of Lovers, and a former member of Deafheaven. The other half of Camera Shy is Alexandra Morte, who used to sing in Whirr.

Their songs are, as you could probably guess by the phrase "dream pop", very light and dreamy. The heavy shoegaze influence of Whirr isn't really notable here. Instead, most songs are just an acoustic guitar, quiet vocals, and a hell of a lot of reverb. Their debut full-length expands on that basic structure to include drums, piano, and electric guitar that has a Smiths-esque jangly sound to it.

Music aside, I have to mention that they used to work with Run For Cover (as do Whirr), but were disowned by the label after Bassett posted a few negative comments were made towards the band G.L.O.S.S., which you can look into if you want. They were already notorious for sayings stupid shit online, but that was the breaking point. I'm not supporting this by sharing this band, just providing a way for people who want to hear their music to listen to it. They're a decent band, so if subtle indie pop songs are your thing, then give 'er a listen. Enjoy.

Infinity Girl

Infinity Girl are a four-piece indie/shoegaze band from Brooklyn, New York that formed in 2012. They just released their sophomore album on Topshelf Records. Prior to that, they were relatively unknown, though they did have a releases under their belt already. Infinity Girl are a shoegaze band in the sense that they incorporate distant vocals and heavily-distorted and effect-laden guitars. However, their sound is a little more diverse than the standard "shoegaze" tag. For one, they've got a lot of dream pop/indie sensibilities, particularly in the vocal melodies and chord progressions. They've also got an energy that's more pumping than brooding, which really gives life to some of these songs. As far as Harm goes, one of its best characteristics is that each song is very different and unique from the next. Not only do they have distinct melodies and such, but they experiment with different sounds and effects, almost to the point that there's no repetition of them throughout the album. You can tell they really sought to make each song stand out, and the result was definitely worth it. Enjoy.

Cigarettes After Sex

Cigarettes After Sex are an indie/slowcore band that originated from El Paso, Texas in 2008, though they got their proper start in 2012 when they relocated to Brooklyn, New York, which is where they are currently based out of. Their debut EP was released in 2012, and garnered quite a bit of attention over time, which is definitely deserved. For one, these four songs are practically flawless. Think of the atmosphere and gentle vocals of Slowdive mixed with the dark, evil twin version of a Pixies bass line. They can be slow and moody, but strangely optimistic, which works out to be the perfect dynamical paradox. I highly recommend their first EP, it's a perfect example of how slowcore/shoegaze/whatever you want to call it can perfectly mesh atmospheric sounds with pop sensibilities.

After a few years and some major line-up shifts, their second EP (if it can be called that) was just released this month. It's only one song, but it's one damn good song. "Affection" picks up where they left off, but with a little higher production value, and a very prominent, swelling electric guitar to add some weight to the song. This band's small but sweet discography is highly worth the listen, so enjoy.
