    distlink

Library to compute distance between elliptic orbits (MOID)

This C++ library allows to compute the Minimal Orbital Intersection Distance (MOID) between two elliptic confocal orbits using the method by Kholshevnikov & Vassiliev (1999), Cel. Mech. Dyn. Astr., 75, 75. The implementation of the method is described in (Baluev & Mikryukov 2019), Astronomy & Computing, 27, 11. It employs numeric error control and deals carefully with nearly degenerate cases (like almost circular and almost coplanar orbits). Library also includes auxiliary functions. The code was developed and tested with GCC, though it should be usable with any other C++-compatible compiler. See README.

    galprop_propel

GALPROP update for accurate propagation calculation

The GALPROP program (http://galprop.stanford.edu) computes cosmic-ray propagation numerically. To obtain manifestly accurate solutions an explicit method is now available to replace the Crank-Nicolson operator-splitting method. This can be implemented in the public version of GALPROP with the update provided here. Instructions: replace the four files propel.cc, propel_diagnostics, Galdef.cc and Galdef.h and rebuild the executable. Add solution_method and solution_convergence to the galdef parameter file. A test GALDEF file with these parameters is galdef_54_reltest09; the diagnostics document the accuracy of the solution. A full explanation is given in the GALPROP Explanatory Supplement http://www.mpe.mpg.de/~aws/galprop_explanatory_supplement.pdf Thanks to Deepak Khurana for requesting and testing this update. Now replaced by this project: http://sourceforge.net/projects/galprop where further updates can be found.

    galprop_skymap_convert

Convert galprop skymaps to standard healpix

A routine for converting GALPROP-generated HealPix skymaps to a compatible format which can be plotted by Aladin (v7), available from CDS at http://aladin.u-strasbg.fr. This allows free rotation of the sphere, avoiding the distortions of Aitoff and other projections often used. It is a very practical way to view and prepare skymap plots of GALPROP output. GALPROP outputs a spectrum per HealPix pixel, while Aladin requires each energy to be stored as a column. A conversion is required to make GALPROP skymaps viewable in Aladin. This program performs this conversion, outputs both the original energy bins and energy-integrated spectra, and in addition convolves with a user-defined Gaussian both in energy bins and energy-integrated. Also outputs the spherical harmonic decomposition as HealPix, per energy bin. There is also an option to divide by a second HealPix file, for example to give intensity if file 1 is counts and file 2 is exposure, to give intensity. Now also converts back.

    gcr_convert

converts cosmic-ray files from GALPROP for viewing / plotting.

The GALPROP program (http://galprop.stanford.edu) computes cosmic-ray propagation in the Galaxy, in 2D or 3D. The ouput cosmic-ray distribution is in the form of FITS files which however are not convenient for viewing or plotting with the standard ftools program fv, since the files have 4 or 5 dimensional arrays (due to the momentum and species axes) while fv handles only 3 dimensional arrays. This program converts to fv-compatible FITS files, either from 2D to (R,z) or from 3D to (x,z) at y=0 or (x,y) at z=0, in each case for a chosen cosmic-ray species. The third axis is momentum in each case. The distribution can be viewed with fv as a colour image, contoured, output to a file etc. The program is stand-alone and requires only the cfitsio library to be installed. Build instructions are in the program header. The FITS.cc/FITS.h class used provides simple convenient access to image data, useful also for other projects. For fv and cfitsio see http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/fitsio

    glSatellite Demo

Technological demo of OpenGL ES 2 Android NDK

Technological demo of OpenGL ES 2 for Android platform. It reads public NORAD satellite database and shows the satellite positions and altitude related to Earth in the form of beams (the height of the beam represents the relative altitude). NOTE: The project has been moved to GitHub: https://github.com/nuald/glSatellite-Demo The old one stays here just for the historical reasons. The 3D features present: - OpenGL ES 2; - rotating, multi-touch zooming and moving the globe; - stars on a fixed background; - each satellite is represented by a beam with a unique color; - identifying the corresponding satellite if a beam has been tapped (based on color picking method). Additionally to 3D features presented the application is: - using NDK with C++11 features compiled by LLVM clang; - mixing Java views with OpenGL views (Java is used for settings activity, information and ads panels); - using Android custom message queue to send asynchronous messages from Java to JNI

    hadronic gamma rays

gamma rays from hadronic processes in astrophysics

Cosmic-ray hadronic interaction matrices for gamma-ray and other secondaries for an interstellar medium target are available as described in Huang et al. Astroparticle Physics, 27, 429 (2007). These require significant effort in practice to compute emissivities for given input spectra. To supplement these matrices I provide here a C++ class which reads the matrices, interpolates on user-defined particle and gamma-ray energy grids, and computes the gamma-ray emissivity either differential or in user-defined bands. A sample user program is provided which can be edited to provide the required functionality. See also http://sourceforge.net/projects/galprop, which includes more models.
