hey so this is probably completely pointless but: looking for a job (NZ or fully remote willing to hire a kiwi) in SRE, security, or linux/Unix system administration. 15 years expereince administering Linux and Unix boxes, intermediate level of experience working with docker compose and containerisation and container security. No prior job experience unfortunately. Currently running an entire multi-machine personal cloud infrastructure with a demonstration of all the services I have running at status.highenergymagic.net.

Please boost for reach, any job offers please DM me.

Hi! I'm a long term ➡️ ➡️ ➡️ contractor / freelancer looking for unix-adjacent work, either remote or in Melbourne 🇦🇺.

I have a mixed pedigree of on-premises and cloud and even the occasional foray into mainframes.

I've done a lot of work for startups that may not need a full time infra person to launch yet want to get the foundation solid from the outset. I am good at building novel systems from open source components to meet an organisation’s needs.

I enjoy being on teams with interesting and diverse colleagues and like to think I contribute that back too.

More blurb about me at zikomo.xyz/

Boosts and replies appreciated, thank you.

Successfully migrated the login to my Forgejo Git-Forge from an outdated installation of Authentik to a containerized Keycloak 26 with Passkey (WebAuthN) authentication 🥳

Getting the users from my FreeIPA LDAP via a secured Wireguard tunnel that only allows port 636 to the IPA replica server in my DMZ.

Works like a charm. Once the handful of users on my instance have linked their new Keycloak identity with their Forgejo account, I can disable the old OIDC with Authentik 🙂

          Today’s Vim discovery: `:x` vs `:wq`.

While `:wq` writes the file regardless, :x only writes if there are unsaved changes. It preserves the file's `mtime` if you just opened it to look around.

Running Podman :podman: in production for years now, and I don't miss the Docker daemon one bit.

I just published a deep dive on managing OCI containers the Unix way: daemonless, rootless, and natively integrated with systemd via Quadlets.

            I cover:
            - Real secrets management
            - Auto-updates via systemd timers
            - The Docker compatibility layer

This is the guide I wish I had when making the switch.

I run 21 OCI containers with Podman (and Quadlets!) on my ARM aarch64 server on Netcup with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 10.1. Memory utilization is a bit high, but the system is working absolutely stable for months.

TLS certificates and ingress-routing is handled fully automatically by Traefik and labels, attached to the containers.

Having everything containerized, makes it really easy to clean up 🙂 There's some applications, that I don't even use anymore. Time to clean up.

Then I'll continue, replacing the old Authentik installation with Keycloak for my OIDC applications (Forgejo, Wallos etc.)

We're frozen on an old version because AIX and Solaris are stuck on Java 11, and newer Jenkins needs Java 17+. Our build farm has 33 nodes across everything from Raspberry Pi to SPARC T4-1.

Now looking at Actions as a way out.

New blog post: Speeding Up Forgejo CI with a Custom OCI Image

My blog's pipeline spent more time installing dependencies than actually building the site. Two commits and one Containerfile later, that step is gone entirely.

Bonus: Forgejo ships with a built-in OCI container registry, so the whole thing is self-contained on a single instance. No Docker Hub, no external registry.

I'm Blake — reintroducing myself as I'm back on the timeline.

I'm a Cloud Engineer working in Site Reliability and DevOps in the healthcare industry. I design and build highly scalable, resilient infrastructure that powers modern healthcare systems. Day-to-day I work with .NET, JavaScript, and TypeScript to deliver reliable platforms.

Outside of work, I build with Go — creating tools that prioritize performance, privacy, and user empowerment.

A couple things I'm working on:

RideAware — A cycling training platform for building structured training plans, analyzing ride data, and completing indoor workouts all in one place.

Arcline Hosting — A self-hosted web hosting service for people who want to know exactly where their data lives. It runs on hardware I own and operate — no AWS, no Cloudflare, no third-party CDN. Shared, WordPress, and VPS plans with personal ticket and email support.

My core interests span SRE, cloud infrastructure, DevOps/automation, and network engineering. I spend a lot of time with Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and enjoy digging into routing, firewalls, and secure network design.

I'm here because I care about privacy, self-hosting, and building things that give people more control over their own data. Good to be back — looking forward to reconnecting with this community.

                                                    New series: FreeBSD Foundationals

Part 1 is about Jails - specifically VNET Jails. What epair interfaces actually are (virtual ethernet cables), how bridges tie them together, why the host is basically a router for your jails, and what devfs rulesets control.

Covers the full lifecycle from jail.conf through pf firewalling with NAT/RDR for IPv4 and direct routing for IPv6. Plus the gotchas that'll cost you hours if nobody warns you.

Not a beginner tutorial, hardcore details. The useful middle.

SCE for Windows now supports the latest versions of the puppetlabs‑pwshlib dependency, including a fix for DSC reporting issues.

In addition, resource names are updated to correctly reference SCE instead of the legacy CEM name.

NOTE: When updating to the latest release of SCE for Windows, you will also want to upgrade `puppetlabs-pwshlib` as well.
