WIP | The Unsexy Business of Movement Trays

The hobby can’t all be flashy games and pro painted minis. There are the unsung heroes of the game, those things that make life just that little bit easier. For games of The Old World, where moving large bricks of soldiers across the battlefield individually would be a nightmare, that hero is the movement tray. And I had to spend way more time on making them than I thought I would, so now you get to read about some plastic squares.

This year has unintentionally had something of a throwback theme, as I've started playing Mordheim, and now I'm working on getting an army for Warhammer: The Old World off the ground. I never got to play Warhammer Fantasy back in the day, let alone make a rank and flank army. When Age of Sigmar launched, I did manage to pick up some official models, which I supplemented with miniatures from Fireforge Games. I didn't get very far, as the army didn't really have a place in the modern game. I mean, sure, I could play them as Cities of Sigmar, but it just didn't fit very well. But thanks to the revitalization of Warhammer Fantasy, I'm finally able to give this army some much needed love.

Bretonnia continues to be a sleeper hit on this blog. Last year, the second mini to get a spotlight was the King of Bretonnia himself, a name that I eternally find difficult to spell, King Louen Leoncoeur. It's all of those pesky French-y vowels. This year, the faction goes up on the podium to the coveted first mini spotlight of the year. While not strictly speaking a Bretonnian (or human, for that matter) model, I did some slight converting to make a Damsel on Foot for the army.

Another year gone by and here we are at the end, which means it's time for the annual Year In Review for the Space Dinosaur Miniatures. This has been a good year, with Covid waning allowing for more activities, but I still got a good amount of minis done.

Review: Space Dinosaur Miniatures 2021 and a Look Forward to 2022

Now that we're nearing the end of 2021 and we can see 2022 just off the horizon, it's time for the Space Dinosaur Minis 2021 year in review. Obviously, 2021 was another Covid year, but unlike 2020 I wasn't locked in my house the entire time, so this year there's a little bit less accomplished, but still, I think I made a good run of the year.

Review: Space Dinosaur Miniatures 2020 and a Look Forward to 2021

While 2020 has been a wild year, what with the pandemic and wildfires and elections and all, but here on the Space Dinosaur Miniatures I've been having a great time. A large part of this has been the working from home, which has resulted in an explosion of hobby work. The blog has grown from 3 to 8 posts a year to breaking 50 posts in 2020. I've added a new army to the bunch, and several armies have grown a bit in size. So lets take a look back at 2020 to see what I got done, and then we'll look to 2021 and what I have in store for you dear reader. 

 

Hobby Table: Battle Pilgrims of Arioch

Although I love Age of Sigmar dearly, there is one faction from Warhammer Fantasy that I miss dearly -- Bretonnia! There is just the wondrous sight of a wedge of knights with their bright heraldic colors charging headlong into an infantry formation to devastate it. Technically, there are war scrolls for Bretonnian units, so I use those for rules purposes. They are a bit outdated in the current competitive meta, but as a narrative player that doesn't worry me too much. 

The other issue is that all of the models are no longer in production. Now, I was able to get some second hand models, but as time goes on this option gets more and more cost prohibitive. But remember, Bretonnia is just a fantasy medieval faction. I bought a Fireforge starter set called Deus Vult, which came with knights, archers/crossbowmen, men-at-arms and foot sergeants.
