It’s hard to believe that it’s already been two weeks since we welcomed players to Haddonfield with the official launch of Halloween: The Game. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who’s jumped into our asymmetrical horror sandbox so far, and our team continues to work tirelessly to refine the experience for our players.

As we discussed in our What’s Coming Next?[halloweengame.com] post last week, thanks to your thoughtful feedback, our team has identified and prioritized a list of pain points to tackle. In today’s 1.0.3 patch, we are very excited to address many of these issues by introducing a host of bug and crash fixes, balance adjustments, and gameplay improvements.

Balance Adjustments

As we continue to play, monitor, and gather feedback, we’ve identified some balance adjustments we felt were necessary for this patch. Many of these changes are being rolled out to minimize frustrating, overpowered, or unenjoyable situations. While we are happy to implement the following changes, we have also identified additional balance opportunities we plan to release with future updates. Your passionate feedback has been greatly beneficial to the team and we are eager to continue improving Halloween: The Game.

Civilian Melee Rebalance

We performed a Civilian-focused melee rebalance to eliminate easy one-shot Michael downs, especially when using Bob and Laurie or Perks that give a boost while Drunk. This also included buffing Michael’s Bloodthirst Damage Resistance to extend the duration of melee encounters. We want Civilians to be capable of fighting back against Michael, but we recognized that certain characters could inflict extremely high damage far too consistently.

Increased Michael’s damage resistance across all Bloodthirst levels

Downed Michael

While there were already mechanics in place to bolster Michael after he recovers from being Downed, we’re adding additional buffs in this patch to combat harassment and avoid instant follow-up downs. This, combined with the above melee rebalancing, addresses the ease in which these occurrences could happen and ensures Michael always has ample means of retaliation if he is being surrounded or consistently pressured by an aggressive squad.

Michael now gains a short duration buff after getting up from a Downed state. This buff grants Michael Stagger immunity and an increase in Damage Resistance, Melee Damage, and Melee Attack Speed for the duration of the buff.
Michael will also be empowered with increased Health Regeneration and Daze Resistance for a short period of time after getting up from a Downed state

Weapon Power Tuning

To provide more time for players to react to incoming hits we are introducing a small damage reduction and a small increase to time in between all attack combos for Wood Axes and Pickaxes. We don’t want to discourage melee combat and would prefer to provide players additional opportunities to counter. Civilians should now have more time to shove during melee combos to interrupt Michael and experience increased cooldown time between stumbles. We are also adjusting the available quantities of certain weapon types on maps to increase their rarity and further incentivize exploration.

Lowered amount of heavy Melee Weapons, Rifles, and Shotguns spawns across all maps and locations
Increased the Stagger cooldowns for Civilians
Reduced overall Melee Weapon Durability

Scoring Adjustments

We are taking some steps to balance the value of Special Targets and Residents to ensure match scoring better represents the overall outcome and creates greater opportunities for mid-to-late game swings. We have lowered the score values for killing Special Targets, while increasing the score values for both saving and killing Residents. While we plan to improve Special Target spawning, tracking, and more with future updates, these changes will make every Resident, Civilian, and Special Target feel important to the final score.

Grabs and Pocket Knives

We are continuing to monitor the balance of Grabs and Struggling. In previous patches, we made it easier for Civilians to struggle free from Grabs at lower Stalk Tiers. In today’s patch we have made adjustments to further reduce the difficulty of escaping Grabs. We also lowered the force caused by failed Grab attempts so Civilian players won't stumble as dramatically, allowing a better chance to slip away. Our team is having ongoing conversations about pocket knives and we plan to provide more substantial tuning in the future, but for now we have increased the pocket knife minigame difficulty to allow Michael players slightly more time to pull off Context Executions.

Civilian Speed

We’ve adjusted the effectiveness of Athleticism for movement and sprint speeds to reduce the speed of high Athleticism Civilians while also increasing the speed of low Athleticism Civilians. We noticed that certain Civilians were far too fast in their running and sprint speeds.

Challenge Adjustments

We understand that challenges and their associated rewards are extremely important to players. We have and will continue to address fundamental issues impacting challenge progression and tune challenge requirements. Our latest patch brings a handful of corrections to challenge tracking along with a sweeping balance pass on Progressive Challenge goals.

Players with progress exceeding the required goals for Progressive Challenges after our updates simply need to gain any progress toward that objective to complete the challenge.

Various Crash Fixes and Optimization Improvements
All Passive Challenges will now continue to gain progress after Prestiging
- This is a temporary fix and we are working to fix the issue where Prestiging will cause your Passive Challenges to appear as locked
Fixed an issue where the Host of the Private Match was unable to unlock trophies/achievements

Civilians

Reduced difficulty for completing any Challenges that require the player to knock Michael off his feet
Reduced difficulty for completing any Challenges that require the player to blind, disorient, or stun Michael

What's Coming Next For Halloween: The Game?

It’s been just over one week since the official launch of Halloween: The Game. In that time, we’ve welcomed well over 1,000,000 players to Haddonfield and witnessed millions of ruthless Michael Myers kills and harrowing Civilian rescues. Your excitement and passion for our asymmetrical horror sandbox has been incredible, and our team is grateful to everyone who’s jumped in to share scares with friends. While we’ve worked rigorously to roll out a series of patches following our Early Access launch on September 4, our efforts to continue improving Halloween: The Game aren’t slowing down.

Our community has done an outstanding job sharing their gameplay highlights, reporting pesky bugs, and providing ample feedback. We built Halloween: The Game with this passionate, engaged community in mind and greatly appreciate your thoughtful commentary. In an effort to better set expectations with our players, we wanted to spend some time acknowledging some of the issues players have been experiencing since launch, provide status updates on fixes, and briefly discuss what’s next.

Performance/Stability/Crash Fixes

We understand that players on various platforms or using specific PC hardware configurations, have been experiencing performance problems, including frustrating crashes. Our team has been closely monitoring crash reports and collecting information from our community to help further pinpoint and address these issues across all platforms. We’ve also been working with our platform partners to gather the reports necessary to assist our team in these efforts.

In addition to various performance improvements and crash fixes, our team is actively working to address the following community pain points:

Players crashing when the Loomis reinforcement enters the match.Our team is actively investigating performance hits that occur when Loomis spawns in across multiple platforms.

Players crashing at the end of Singleplayer Chapters
Based on community feedback, these issues most commonly occur when reaching the AAR screen on the Prologue and Ch 3 and our team is actively working to identify the causes of these crashes.

Players crashing on Xbox Series X|S
While we are aware and investigating crashes across all platforms, we have noticed increased crash reports from players on Xbox Series X|S in various gameplay scenarios. We are continuing to investigate improvements for this platform.

With Halloween: The Game, our team aimed to deliver a robust, satisfying progression system with a strong suite of challenges on day one. As fellow players, we understand how important those rewards are to the overall gameplay hook. We’ve made enormous strides since our Early Access launch to address many of the issues impacting Challenges, Achievements, and Trophies, but we are aware of lingering problems causing frustration with our players. Chasing down, correcting, and tuning these remaining challenge-related pain points is a priority for our team.

Story Mode Challenges

While from a technical standpoint, all of the challenges in the singleplayer story mode are now completable, we understand that several continue to give players consistent difficulties. According to your feedback the following challenges are the primary offenders:

Chapter 4 Challenge 5
Fully stalk Bob and Lynda while they make out in living room

Chapter 4 Challenge 6
Complete the Chapter matching the films plot

Chapter 5 Challenge 6
Destroy any police car before you escape

Our team is investigating potential adjustments to make those specific challenges easier for players to overcome in future updates.

Progressive Challenges

Much like the singleplayer story mode challenges, our team is happy to report most of the issues impacting Progressive Challenges have also been resolved through post-launch updates. However, we have identified instances of challenges that contain unclear or ambiguous instructions. An example of this is the Weapon Progressive Challenges not stating that the corresponding weapon is required for progression. We are also investigating reports of certain challenges that are not tracking properly under certain conditions.

Our team is currently identifying fixes or adjustments for the following Progressive Challenges:

Rachel - Superstitious Tools
Alexis - Craftswoman
Laurie - Quick Thinking

We have also heard your feedback regarding the quantities required for some of our Progressive Challenges. While our main priority is ensuring that challenge progression is tracked accurately, we will also be evaluating and tuning some of these objectives to provide a more rewarding experience to players.

Achievements/Trophies

For most of our players, Achievements and Trophies are tracking as intended. Unfortunately, we are also investigating instances where the Achievements Purely and Simply Evil, Pumpkin Smasher, and Heavy Handed are not being awarded to players upon achieving these objectives. Bug Fixes

As our team continues to refine Halloween: The Game, investigating and implementing bug fixes will be an ongoing priority. While we are currently tracking a variety of bug reports, we have honed in on a focused list of some of the most detrimental bugs impacting player enjoyment. We are actively working on fixes for the following issues:

Shape Jump ability stuck on cooldown
We are investigating an issue in which certain gameplay interactions can cause Michael’s Shape Jump ability to be stuck in a cooldown state.

Hero Losing Movement After Grab
We are investigating an issue where Civilian players Grabbed during specific interactions lose movement after released from the Grab.

Civilians Still Executed After Breaking Free
We are investigating solutions to an issue where players could still be executed even after successfully escaping a grab when playing in Public Matches.

Residents Spawning on Roofs
Our team is also investigating reports of death-defying Residents making their way onto rooftops on various maps.

In addition to the list above, players can expect a wide range of bug fixes in upcoming updates.

Balance Adjustments

Since launch, it’s been incredibly exciting watching players uncover the depth of Halloween: The Game. As players have sharpened their skills and learned both sides of the experience, we’ve been carefully monitoring player behavior and game balance. As with any asymmetrical horror title, maintaining the satisfying game of cat and mouse is essential. We want to ensure both Michael and Civilian gameplay remains engaging and we provide players with ample counters to the strategic problems other players throw their way.

Players can expect consistent, carefully considered balance adjustments with future updates, starting with the Bob-shaped elephant in the room. Our team is planning a series of changes designed to reduce the excessive effectiveness of select perks and provide the Boogeyman with horrifying options to combat would-be Bob Squads. We feel that it should be more difficult to stagger Michael, especially after successive downs.

On the topic of staggering, we’ve also heard the feedback about the perceived “Slasher” meta unfolding. Overall, we want melee combat exchanges to feel better for both Michael and Civilian players. In that spirit, we will be making adjustments to melee damage, Civilian stagger states, and combo attack speed for weapons like the wood axe. These changes are focused on providing a more satisfying back and forth when participating in melee combat. We will also be continuing to tune the Grab/Struggle dynamics between Michael and Civilians to keep those encounters feeling tense as well.

Additionally, our team has been closely monitoring the early match pacing and end of match scoring in Halloween: The Game. Special Targets are incredibly valuable to both sides and we are planning various balance adjustments to address the ease in which Civilians and Michael can rush these objectives with future updates. In the shorter term, we will be further tuning the end of match scoring to better reflect team performance.

What’s Next?

At this stage, we know players are eager to hear about what comes next for Halloween: The Game. We are currently targeting an update early next week designed to tackle a host of these known issues, bug fixes, and balance adjustments. Improving the foundational experience is incredibly important for our team as we prepare for larger gameplay updates and future content plans. In addition to next week’s patch, we are planning a Quality of Life update in early October that will provide more fixes and improvements. And with Halloween right around the corner, we have exciting plans to celebrate Michael’s big month with all of you.

I skipped the tutorial at first, but when I went back to it later, I realized it's amazing. The vibe is great, really gives a creepy atmosphere. Gameplay gets a bit repetitive but it's so addicting you don't even care. I only play civilian for now cos I refuse to get bullied.
Felt like the game was too pricey at first but honestly it's totally worth it.

Game is fundamentally really fun, the concept, the community.

But there's more flaws than there are pros.

Illfonic and Gun have been in the asymmetrical horror scene for quite some time now. Illfonic and Gun have developed a habit of obtaining IPs, creating asymmetrical PVP games, supporting them for about a year, releasing mostly meaningless DLC that's little more than skins with some numbers tweaked, and then dropping them when interest dies down.

Texas chainsaw. Predator Hunting Grounds. Killer Clowns. Ghost Busters. These are all games that got dropped at worst, or at best are now on lifelines. There is absolutely nothing that makes me think that Halloween won't just be the next momentary project that gets tossed in 6 months to a year.

And the signs are already there.

Gameplay has Myers using a detection skill on cooldown, which equates to a kill per cooldown at the least, meanwhile the survivors are scrambling to find RNG items that MAY OR MAY NOT spawn and MAY OR MAY NOT bug out and partially exist in the game.

Yes it's fun, but long term I don't see it lasting.

I love the concept of the game, but the balance between Michael Myers and the survivors clearly needs work.

I just finished a match where I got knocked down for the entire game by players playing as Bob, who had found a metal pipe near a chimney. That weapon never breaks, and I ended up sandwiched between two players who kept chaining hits on me without me being able to do anything.

The real issue is that Myers loses his bloodlust as soon as survivors hit him or shoot him. That makes no sense to me: it means any player can cancel out his power growth just by hitting him or shooting at him, which should be risky for them, not a miracle solution. The longer the game goes, the stronger Myers should get, not punished for being attacked. As a result, survivors get off way too easy. I landed multiple axe hits without even dropping a quarter of a survivor's health bar, and they regenerate on top of that without doing anything. Healing items feel completely useless in this game.

Another issue: Myers' abilities take way too long to recharge, especially the one meant to let him grab a survivor, which becomes useless since survivors almost always have a knife on them to break free, and even without a knife, a Bob frees himself unusually fast.

That said, I'm not saying the problem is only on Myers' side, because playing as a survivor is also frustrating when Myers doesn't even try to grab you and just hits you directly instead. On that note, the "Evil Presence" ability, which forces the survivor to step back, feels a bit too strong: Myers wouldn't need to force that step-back if survivor stamina was nerfed as a trade-off. There's also a real problem when playing Myers trying to stop a moving car: you can't teleport in front of it unless you have the "Shattered Reality" ability, because survivors can see too far ahead and prevent you from reappearing in time. Another point: firearms clearly don't do enough damage, a survivor can fire 4 or 5 shotgun shells at Myers without even knocking him down.

There are also way too many ways to escape the map: regular cars, police cars, exit doors at the edge of the map, the 2-3 bunkers scattered around, and the ambulance. On top of that, survivors can straight up win by running out the clock: if you waste time trying to catch one player without succeeding, the others have plenty of time to evacuate the whole town. I also find the survivors' perk cards way too strong, giving too much of an advantage, and they can even be stacked to become even more powerful.

Finally, I feel like survivors have constant stamina. Even though it's been nerfed recently, it's still way too generous. I much preferred Friday the 13th's stamina system: there was real tension around managing stamina and healing, which is clearly missing here.

The result: matches are frustrating on both sides, whether you're spending most of the game on the ground as Myers, or getting hit without being able to react as a survivor. It's a shame, because the game has real potential, but the overall balance needs to be a priority fix. I will update my Steam review once these points have been addressed.
