Next to Allee Miles Davis

Time for a drawing.  This one done at the park in Cimiez, Nice, where there are innumerable ancient olive trees.  This is a tree next to Allee Miles Davis.  The lanes in the park are named after American jazz artists. 8x10 inches, pencil and watercolor on paper.

Like The Stealth Bomber

Trying to work out ideas for a painting of the Chase mansion in North Adams, MA, I turn to drawing.  One cannot step very far away from the front of the building, so I've been drawing on site to try to capture what the contours of the building really are from as far back as I can go.  The front porch roof is shaped like the stealth bomber.

'Bridgeness'

It becomes apparent immediately that if I'm trying to paint something as complex as this bridge, I cannot paint the details, just a semblance.  Squint and paint the shapes that seem to be visible.  Try to capture the 'bridgeness'.  9x12 inches, oil on panel, charcoal pencil on paper.

Training

Working in a shady spot, I painted the primary side of the stationary caboose and box car yesterday afternoon at Western Gateway Heritage State Park in North Adams, MA. 9x12 inches, oil on panel, charcoal on paper.

A Found Composition

Most often I stumble into a composition, but it was a few days ago when I saw this composition: the church tower on the left acting as a repoussoir to push your eye downtown in North Adams, MA, and the vertical with the tree line edge emulating in reverse the right vertical with the building top edge.  Also the parallels of the curb and the yellow line and the tree/building top line are nice too.   9x12 inches, oil on panel, charcoal pencil on paper.

First Thing

The first thing I do, after getting home from painting outside, is pop the painting out of the panel carrier, put it on the easel, and look at it.  It's going to live indoors from now on so this is important.  I was told once, that a painting done well, will look good in the dim light of a closet. 

East Main

A view of East Main Street, North Adams, MA.  I tried to simplify a complicated jumble of peaks, points and shadows.  Next I'll try a slightly larger version.  9x12 inches, oil on panel, charcoal pencil on paper.

Paint On A Panel

It was supposed to be sunny, so I went out to paint in North Adams, MA. anyway.  First I did a small sketch, followed by putting some paint on a panel.   9x12 inches, oil on panel.

This afternoon the sun reappeared so I continued my series at Greylock Works in North Adams, MA.  Both the painting and the drawing are 12x9 inches.  

Mill Work

The hazy sun lasted long enough earlier today for me to complete this drawing and painting at Greylock Works.  Both are 9x12 inches.

A Parking Lot Behind and In Front

This summer I've been participating in a pop-up gallery in North Adams, MA.  When its my turn to gallery-sit, I bring along a sketchpad.  There's a parking lot behind the gallery and a parking lot in front of the gallery.  So, naturally, I draw cars.

A Sky in Old Nice

A quick drawing to demonstrate that sky form that intersects between the two tenements of Rue de la Loge at the corner of Rue de la Croix in Nice old town, which I wrote about the other day.  This piece of sky is what amazed me almost every day when I walked here.   8x10 pen, ink, wash, and pastel on Bristol paper.
