The Hopper with Clouds and Sun

Here is yesterday's second painting The changing light from the clouds and sun continued throughout most of the day.  The bear did not come back while I was there.  It depicts a view of the Hopper from Haley Farm at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA.  11x14 inches, oil on canvas panel.

Scampering at the Hopper

This is the first of two paintings of the Hopper, done today from a hayfield at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA, on a day of clouds and sun.  When I was finished and started to head back to the car, I saw a young bear scampering away from me. I think I interrupted the bear trying to climb a nearby apple tree. He took a sharp left and headed for the woods. 9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.

This Old Tree

This old tree has seen many people pass by where it stands in front of the barn at Haley Farm next to the path leading to multiple trailheads.  It's located at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA.  The weather forecast calls for days of rain, so I painted outside yesterday while I could despite the waning sun.  9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.  

At the End of Hopper Road

Evey year I try to paint this truck at least once.  Since the early 90's, it's been standing in a cow pasture at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA.  9x12 inches, oil on canvas panel.

Closer Hopper

At the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA, I painted a closer view of the Hopper from the edge of a hayfield next to the trailheads.  6x8 inches, acrylic gouache on Guerrilla Painter carton board.

What You Get

Determined to paint despite the gusting winds, I sheltered next to the barn yesterday afternoon at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA.  The view wasn't ideal, and so this is what you get.  Earlier I started to set up at the shed with the two tractors but left it quickly when I noticed baby mice darting all over the ground. 6x8 inches, oil on linen panel.

Smitten

This is my very first gouache painting completed a few minutes ago.  I'm smitten.  I used just three colors: yellow ochre, burnt sienna and ultramarine blue, with white.  6 1/2 x 8 inches, gouache on mixed media paper.

If The Sun Is Shining

One has to paint outside if the sun is shining, and so it was at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA this afternoon: a view looking west of the barn and the Taconic Mountains in the distance. 9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

Springtime Truck

This truck has been sitting in the cow yard next to the barn at the end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA. since the early 1990's (I'm told).  The location is also a major trailhead, so over a generation many people have seen it. 9x12 inches, oil on linen panel.

Hopper In Winter

Since the sun was shining, I went back to the end of Hopper Road.  I tried to drive there once a couple years ago in January, but the dirt road was so icy that I had to turn around...very carefully.  My car couldn't get up the hill.  So this is a place I usually do not visit in the winter.  In this painting you can see the barn at left and the Hopper at top center.  The mountain tops are covered with snow.  9x12 oil on linen.

A Yellow Truck In The Snow

Yesterday was a mild sunny day in January so I drove up the last muddy stretch of Hopper Road to paint a portrait of the yellow truck.  Such a quiet and excruciatingly beautiful place.  The only noise was a cow in the barn occasionally striking the wall with a hoof.  9x12 oil on linen.

Edges

Another drawing from last week when I was scouting out the farm at the end of Hopper Road for painting the next day.  This tree resides at the edge between the pasture and the hay field.  I went under the barbed wire to stand in the pasture.  This pasture is interesting because it's located right at the edge of the woods, partly in and partly out.  Edges in drawings and edges in reality.  12x9 pencil on paper.

Out Of Time

For the first of the three paintings that I did yesterday, I set up in the middle of the hay field, and faced The Hopper.  It was a beautiful day.  I was both aware of time passing, that such beauty would not last, and while I painted, I forgot about time, except as the shadows changed ever slightly on the row of trees with the movement of the sun, but even that I forgot for a while.  9x12 oil on panel.

Line Up With The Sun

This was the second of three paintings that I did today.  I scouted it out yesterday late in the day when the sun eventually came out.  I was stunned by how brilliant the tree was.  This morning I stood in a different spot in the hayfield so that the sun would still line up behind the tree as it did late yesterday.  9x12 oil on panel.

The Beckoning Landscape

An opportunity to paint outside beckoned, as they say.  So I stood in the shade at the very end of Hopper Road in Williamstown, MA, and painted.  To my right, the farmer and several helpers were loading the last bales of the first cut of haying into the barn.   9x12 oil on panel.
