Survivors of Lucknow

Hoi,

Part of the Mutiny Miniatures "Survivors of Lucknow" blister, these figures are done up to give some more flavour to future IM games.

The figures turned out a little too dark due to the wash I forgot to dilute. Still I  like them quite a lot!

Some more IM Civilians

Hoi,

If one is to recreate India in 1857-1859, I guess one is to have some civilians to people all the cities and villages of said country. These Eureka miniatures civilians are awesome if a bit more of slight build than the Foundry and Mutineer figures, but that is more realistic I suppose, with the Europeans being heavier in build anyway.

The first of these are a snake charmer and rope-act, more civilians are in the books but other projects take precedence.

More is surely coming, watch this space ;-)

Some Indian Mutiny Characters

Hoi,

The Indian Mutiny Project (henceforth called IM) continues. Here are some Foundry character models.

I like experimenting with the colours and patterns India has to offer. besides that these are great figures as well in their own right.

Did I ever tell you...

...that I really hate Christopher Columbus? Ever since starting this Indian Mutiny project just about every search on "Indian" stuff, has resulted in North American Native subjects. Very frustrating! That said I have tried to get some more stuff finished, amongst this is a command figure for General Havelock, both mounted and on foot. The other red coated officer is from Foundry.

These excellent Mutineer miniatures will be joined soon by others as well as the Sepoy leadership. As a trial project I ordered some palm trees from China and based some up as terrain for anything desert themed.

The Sepoy officer is there for scale purposes, the small palm tree in the first photo is my son's he got it in a box of plastic animals at a zoo. He wanted to paint it up as well so we painted the both of them together.

Indian Mutiny

Hoi,

Let's get the Indian Mutiny ball rolling today! Now that the heat-wave over here is more or less over I have been able to finish some of the units I have been painting for this project. First are the Rebellious Sepoys I have painted up yet. There are some Foundry characters both Sepoy and Hill Tribesmen. The Sepoy unit in the background are Mutineer Miniatures Sepoys in distressed dress.

Next up is a unit of British regular infantry, at this moment I have not yet given it a regimental title and will use it as a vanilla unit, that said I might designate it later on.

While the troops are Mutineer Miniatures, the officer is from the Foundry pack. The Foundry and Mutineer figures mix very well, I have now also gotten some Iron Duke Miniatures figures and they don't mix in with the other brands. I'll just get on painting more stuff right?

Flashman in the Game!

Hoi,

In my most recent posts I have been going on about the influence the Flashman books have had on my take of gaming and painting miniatures. In a combination of showing newly painted miniatures and rambling on about the hobby, I present you with this day's post.

A few years back I first heard about the Flashman Papers, not living in the English-speaking world tends to get you behind on these kind of things. The 12 books comprising the Flashman Papers were partly bought online and partly when visiting the UK with school, Waterstones Oxford: thanks heaps!
Anyway, when I do not have any new books on my nightstand, I tend to re-read ones I have in the bookcase. So a few weeks ago I reread the Flashman books and since I now have a bit more knowledge about the events Flashman experiences, I could now put them in perspective a bit more. When first reading the books, the conflicts Flashman gets himself into, were not all that interesting to me in that I was intrigued but not enough to get into gaming them. Lately the Crimean War is something I have been painting (in 15mm no less) and have done some figures for in 28mm as well.

Reading the books and most specially "Flashman in the Great Game" reached out to me somehow and I got drawn into the Indian Mutiny... That is not something I had ever expected to happen. The brutality of the conflict is not my regular cup of tea, nor is it anything for me to have mr T. Atkinson rambling around in anything but his trusted red coat, that said I really connected with the conflict and the great miniatures available for it by Mutineer Miniatures, Foundry and Iron Duke.

Yes, that's right I started a new project and am now in deep in the Indian Mutiny... At the moment I have a small amount of Foundry miniatures and a slightly larger amount of Mutineer Figures. I am currently aiming at collecting two Sharpe Practice forces for the Allahabad Moveable Force  and  it's adversaries.
While I have a Flashman in India figure (just like the one in the bookcover above) it is from the same line as the figure in lancer outfit shown in a previous post. Studio Miniatures have a nice regular 28mm figure of the same pose and uniform. Apart from that I have obtained one of the Wargames Illustrated Giants of History line Flashmans and an Eureka figure is on it's way.

With help from friends and the excellent information on the Iron Duke site, it really is brilliant, I have now quite enough reference material to get the uniforms historically correct, that said; I want the figures to look right but I also want them to look good. Therefore I am quite ok with stretching the limits and mixing in the odd figure in regular uniform and yes with a red coat.

Apart from the larger games using Sharpe Practice I would like to game smaller skrimishes using Flashy and perhaps replaying scenes from the books. I am now counting on those being solo games, but who knows perhaps in the future...

If this whole project has learned me anything it is that from now on, I am only going to collect and pain, what I like. No more painting and collecting figures in order to be able to play a game. No more painting stuff because it "needs" to be finished, it can wait till the fancy takes me for it again.

In a way this is really liberating and painting all these greatly exotic and thus very colourfull subjects really is grand!

Well I am not sure whether my ramblings here are making any sense but there you go! Keep watching this space for more progress on the Indian Mutiny front.

Into the Far East...

Hoi,

With the exams-correction winding down to the last bits, I have some odd time off for a little painting. Today a small group of Foundry figures for games of Fist Full of Kung Fu and Victorian daring-do. At least Flashy has some adversaries from China to flee from, Flashman and the Dragon anyone?

Back with a tribute!

Hoi,

Okay so I did not expect to be AWFK for such a long time. The flu came back with a vengeance and afterwards the public exams had to be corrected, which is mostly done now. When the correction work was done I managed to paint up some colonial figures in 28mm, just because I wanted to. I also ended up doing some Victorians and both these will feature in a later blogpost.

For today we will have to suffice with just one figure, Sir H. Paget-Flashman, Hector of Afghanistan and Hero of Balaclava and so on and so on. He is from this series LINK and I have pretty much all those figures of him and his ladies. But... they are far too large for the present 28mm standard and ugly in detail too, so I have already obtained the Flashman figure from WI and will invest in the Studio Miniatures version anytime soonish too!

So why did I get paint on this one? Well I have been re-reading the Flashman Papers recently and that got the juices flowing. It also got me going on yet another new project for Sharpe Practice, more about this in a later blog post as well!

Some of you might have noticed that I have named this post "A tribute" and yes I would like to dedicate this figure as a tribute to someone who has been and still is, a big influence on my current hobby-stuff, i.e. Lord M. Awdry himself! Michael has been the very spitting image of the British gentleman and provided me with advise, help and guidance where needed and shares my sarcastic and whimsical sense of humour. So I had a tremendous heap of fun painting this figure and it got me into a new and thrilling adventure. Therefore it will sit in my showcase to inspire me as a silent tribute to the inspirational Lord Awdry!

Still alive, barely...

Hoi,

It has been quiet here for some time, not because of lack of interest but because of a bad case of the flu which is still pretty much wearing me down. Anyway I did do some little things hobby-wise.Firstly, before the flu became too bad, I managed to paint up some more Vikings for DB.

The shield design is that of Jarl Borg, one of Ragnar's most devoted adversaries to be used as an opponent to Ragnar when playing little skirmishes or as part of the DB army when they go raiding together.

Somewhere last week, the Death in the Dark Continent Nick-starter package fell on the doormat. It's a great, hard-cover, book with loads of brilliant pictures and fluff as well as very good army-lists. I am not persé for gaming Darkest Africa but I am all for gaming Colonial games and the rules do look simple enough even for me. One little niggle however is the basing method on specifically 60mm x 50mm sized bases with about 2 to 3 mini's on them. I do not like this way of basing since I like my games to be representations of battles not representations of battles via the vehicle of a boardgame. That said, I had enough plastics lying around to have a little try-out and will paint them up when feeling better.

Inspired by the March release of White Dwarf I also painted up 5 Dark Angel Space Marines, the inspiration dried up almost immediately after painting though and I cannot even be bothered to put up pictures of them here.
Don't get me wrong, I still like the mini's, but seriously another version of WH40.000?!

Well on that bombshell...

Unmarried Zulu's or Napoleonic Austrians anyone?

Hoi,

Just a quick post to let you all know that HäT has put up a duo of crowdfunders for 1:32 Austrian Napoleonics and 1:72 Unmarried Zulu warriors here: LINK.

These sets have been in the making for quite some time and to fasten the process, HäT has now decided to go the way of the crowdfunder to bring them to the wider public.

While I have no use for 1:32 figures I have ordered some of the Zulu's which are Unmarried ones at this moment not available on the market in correct attire anywhere.

For about $15 you would be getting 60 Zulu's! Yup I am in ;-)

Camels anyone?

Hoi,

Finally I found some time to post the pictures I took from my two baggage camels. These are Early War Miniatures and very nice. I will mainly use them with my Great War Middle Eastern figures but they would be perfectly fine riding with the Colonial troops as well.

The miniatures are placed upon some of my "new" terrain tiles. Basically I took some 45cm x 45cm MDF tiles which I coated in some layers of Valejo textured paint (a dark brown and a desert sand) and hey presto very nice terrain tiles in a jiffy!

Bengal Lancers

Hoi,

A pretty long time ago I got my hands on a test-sprue of the new HäT Bengal Lancers. While looking for reference shots I wasn't able to choose between all those great and colourful colour-schemes, so in the end I decided to paint them up in 4 different schemes. From left to right these are: 13th Bengal Lancers, 14th Murray's Jats Lancers, 29th Deccan Horse and Skinner's Horse.

These figures were well worth waiting for, at least I think so. Now I need to decide which regiment I am going to portray and I am afraid it will turn out to be all 4 of them...

Colonial Cavalry testshots

Hoi,

After receiving the latest batch of HäT testshots (the Von Lettow Vorbeck sets and some colonial cavalry) I was very keen to get cracking and so finished these up double quick. Several of these chaps have separate arms so you can create quite a divers looking unit. Each sprue also includes 5 rider poses for every 4 horses. This is done to make a better officer- OR ratio. It also meant I had an extra trooper left. So I took out on of my Italeri Scott's Greys horses and made a little conversion...

And the conversion:
