Paste-Ups on Bowery, in the East Village

graffiti, nyc
Photo by myself, around Houston Street and Bowery, in the East Village.

A couple paste ups on Houston Street found inspiration in McDonald's - something about food and celebrity and New York eating you alive. (That's Kanye West and Angelina Jolie in the poster on the right). Hm.

It was a busy, sunny day and there were tons of people were walking about. Looking at my photos later, I noticed that there must have been a guitar convention going on, because several people carrying guitar cases walked by in the span of a minute. How strange.

Graffiti, in the East Village

Graffiti, nyc
Photo by myself, somewhere in the East Village.

A painting of a robed woman lingers enticingly in a doorway.

We just sailed through a rainy and extremely humid Labor Day Weekend, here. As per tradition, the US Open is going on in nearby Queens.

Unlike tradition, though, many of the games weren't televised over the weekend because of disputes between the tv channel airing the matches (CBS) and Time Warner, the cable company. It was very, very strange (and annoying) not to hear the games in the background. Mark and I watched them online.

All was resolved by Monday though, just in time for the Federer game, a painful game to watch.

Touring along Great Jones, Downtown

Great Jones, nyc
Photo by myself at Great Jones and Lafayette Streets, in the East Village.

A photo from a sunnier day.

When sauntering around wearing infinity scarves and tall boots in the East Village, one cannot help but look around at all the older buildings.

The sidewalks are hollow in this area, like many downtown neighborhoods. These are not the typical poured concrete walkways. Basements and/or tunnels lie below.

Trucks are only allowed to park as far as the curb, for obvious reasons1

Ruff Ride, in the East Village

Ruff Ride, East Village
Photo by myself, somewhere in the East Village.

A dog in a hand-painted mural declared it was a 'ruff ride' to his owner.

Get it? Ruff. A ruff ride.

I think this was the side of a painted van? You can see the wheel below.

Crossing Bowery, in the East Village

Bowery, nyc
Photo by myself, near Bowery Street in the East Village.

A glimpse of Bowery Street.

Actually, you rarely hear New Yorkers say 'Bowery Street'. We usually just say 'Bowery', as in, 'It's south, just beyond Bowery'.

The street is a little rough around the edges, with restaurant supply stores, graffiti, some restaurants and bars. Several years ago, the New Museum opened on this street, near Prince Street, making the area more of a destination.

Bowery is a wide street with a divider in the middle. It is a continuation of Third Avenue, which stops at Astor Place.

Open 24/7 on 14th Street

14th Street, nyc
Photo by myself around 14th Street and First Avenue, in the East Village.

A photo from the stash, at a slightly warmer time.

Older storefronts are more hodge podge than new ones, usually just a huge number of different signs. Obviously this store has an ATM!

Down Second Avenue, on the East Side

Heading Downtown, nyc
Photo by myself, somewhere on Second Avenue, heading downtown.

Parts of the city seem quaint, with twisty streets and smaller buildings. But then other parts resemble a highway.

Above, you'll see everyone on the streets, from motorcycles to skateboarders to cyclists to pedicabs.

Last night, after a long day at work, I stepped onto the elevator at my office building.

The elevator started moving down. Then lurched a little. Then faltered and came to a stop. All the buttons on the wall started flashing in unison, as if possessed.

I was stuck.

Thankfully, I didn't have to pee in my shoe or eat my purse. After many minutes and lurches and flashings of buttons, the elevator finally crept back up to where it'd started and let me out. Phew.

I'm glad nothing serious happened. I told my fiance Mark about the incident later, and he told me he'd been stuck in an elevator twice before.

Once, for a few minutes. Then again for a half hour. He had to be rescued by firefighters, pulled out of the elevator as it was stuck between floors. It must be a somewhat common thing to happen, then.

Painted Skull and Eyeball, in the East Village

Graffiti, nyc
Photo by myself on Bond Street and Bowery, in the East Village.

Two large and cryptic illustrations of a skull and an eyeball adorned what looked like garage doors.

Bond Street is also known as Second Street, for whatever reason.

The flu is going around here and everywhere else. All you hear on the subway and sidewalks is people coughing and snuffling.

My fiance Mark has been laid out with chills and a fever. Just a reminder to everyone to get a flu shot if you haven't already. I hear that the shot is very effective against this year's strain.

Open Everything that's Closed, on Bowery Street

Lafayette Street, nyc
Photo by myself on Bowery Street, in the East Village.

A cryptic illuminated sign to the left reads 'Open Everything That's Closed'. Barely visible above it is another sign in red that reads 'Close Everything That's Open'. Hm.

As on any typical Sunday, all the stores on Bowery were shuttered closed. The street is known for its numerous stores for restaurant equipment and supplies. It's one of the few obviously un-gentrified streets left in Manhattan.

In the olden days, you'd hear people refer to this area as 'The Bowery', mainly derived from the Bowery Mission. It was a sketchy street littered with bums. Now, not so much, thank goodness.

We had a dreary rainy day, Sunday. I took this photo from the passenger seat.

The Look, in the East Village

Graffiti Truck, East Village
Photo by myself on First Avenue and 12th Street, in the East Village.

I got 'the look' from a guy passing by on a bike in the East Village. With the graffiti-covered truck behind him, you'd think it was a tough neighborhood.

The chain around the fellow's body is not for combat. It's to lock his bike up and ensure that the bike will be there later. You see bike messengers and cyclists carry their chains like that, slung around the body.

Outside the Beauty Bar, on 14th Street

Beauty Bar, East Village
Photo by myself on 14th Street and Second Avenue, in the East Village.

The Beauty Bar enjoyed popularity back in the day when many bars had different 'themes'. The vintage sign and storefront make a distinctive impression.

Mark and I were surprised this bar was still open, when we walked by, Sunday afternoon. There was a Halloween display in the cool front window. My memories of this place are extremely hazy.

Apologies for the on-and-off and delayed posts, folks. I'm once again going through a low point with taking photos. Absolutely nothing seems to look good.

Fortunately, I see these periods as more positive rather than negative. These days are not easy, but to me, they are periods of growth. At least, that's what I tell myself.

Anyway, please bear with me. Happy Monday, everyone!

Walking by, in the East Village

East Village, nyc Photo by myself, in the East Village.

Outside a storefront in the East Village, all sorts of people were in mid-step.

I wish I'd taken other photos outside this store. Without a complete name or other markers, I can't figure out where in the city it was taken.

Edit: PS, thanks tons to EVGrieve for clarifying the location!!! It's Sixth and Avenue B, just near Tompkins Square Park. The area is low key and cool, untainted by chain stores.

By the way, we heard about a shooting near the Empire State Building all the way in Japan.

Special news reports were broadcast at 11pm Japan time, 10am New York Time. A gunman had opened fire on passersby on a weekday morning.

The police came by rather quickly but within seconds, ten people had been shot. I know the area intimately and most of the time, the sidewalks are packed with people waiting to enter the Empire State Building and boarding tour buses.

So after my telling everyone repeatedly on this blog that New York is safe, is a random shooting during a very busy time of day. Argh! A few weeks ago, another fellow was killed during the day by police. He had threatened people with a knife in Times Square.

Outside Pinisi Bakery, on East 4th Street

East Village Bakery Photo by myself at East 4th Street and First Avenue, in the East Village.

Very few things are offered for a dollar, here in the city.

A small bottle of water, if you're lucky. Or perhaps a greasy slice of pizza.

Cupcakes are sold for a mere dollar each at the Pinisi Bakery on Mondays thru Wednesdays, in the East Village. I was drawn to their colorful storefront.

Portrait of Two Young Bohemians, in Tompkins Square Park

Becca and Ludwig, nyc Photo by myself in Tompkins Square Park, in the East Village.

While at Tompkins Square Park the other week, I noticed a striking couple seated in a quiet corner, on a park bench.

I'm not sure whether Becca and Ludwig were a couple or whether they were just friends. They were nice enough to allow me to take their picture. Ludwig gave me a big smile, but Becca seemed shy and didn't want to look into the camera.

Though they look very 'East Village' (ie; arty, eclectic or un-traditional), neither lives in the neighborhood.

The Portrait Series is a once-in-a-while installment, featuring New Yorkers encountered on the street.

Larger than Life Mural, in the East Village

School Mural, East Village Photo by myself, somewhere in the East Village.

A huge mural of kids' portraits adorned a wall of a parking lot, in the East Village. There were slogans describing the personalities of each kid, and references to school.

This is photo is another example of my flakiness - I don't remember where it was taken, only that it was in the East Village.

When I was there, I was just focused on admiring the art, and wishing the parking lot weren't so full. It was nice to see art aimed at kids and trying to get them interested in going to school.

Alarmed, in the East Village

Alarm, nyc
Photo by myself on Second Avenue, in the East Village.

Scattered throughout the city, there are alarm boxes that connect you directly with the police or fire department.

All you do is flip a lid and push a button. This one was decorated with graffiti. Under the pink skull sticker is the word 'fire' and a little flame symbol.

I've never seen these things used, but it's nice that they're around. Methinks these were installed when New York was a more dangerous place.

Happy Friday, everyone!

FDNY Mural, in the East Village

FDNY Mural, EV
Photo by myself, somewhere in the East Village.

Somewhere in the East Village, a mural showing a fireman against a city skyline is painted on a roll-down door. The text reads:'We salute the heroes of NYC. Thank you FDNY.'

Dedications to 9/11 are randomly sprinkled throughout the city. In every neighborhood you can encounter mosaics adorning street lights, and painted walls. The tragedy affected so many ordinary New Yorkers, their relatives, friends and neighbors.

I'm not sure what the cutouts are in the rolldown door? Sometimes people cut holes in the door to use as makeshift mail slots.

Peeking In, on St. Mark's Place

East Village, nyc
Photo by myself on St. Mark's Place and First Avenue, in the East Village.

An older man was sitting in his apartment, and he was visible through the protective wire on his windows.

There were signs of age on the fire hydrant, the railing and the building details. The pale orange sign of a new Vietnamese sandwich shop was located next door.

St. Mark's Place sounds like a square or open space. It is actually a segment of Eighth Street, between Third Avenue and Avenue A. This street is named after St. Mark's church on nearby 10th Street, a distinctive landmark located on a triangle in the midst of the street grid.

I would love to know how long the man has lived in this neighborhood. Most likely he's been here a while, and has witnessed a tremendous amount of change. There was a time not long ago when it was dangerous to live on the first floor. Not so much, now.

St. Mark's Place is known for its motley stores. Presently, it is a very touristy street.
