Marquee's are dead, long live Nicky.

Melbourne Heart want a marquee and are toying with Mark Viduka, more like he is toying with them.

The Duke would lift the profile of the Heart immediately, thereby fulfilling one of the criteria of a Marquee. Could Viduka really regain fitness, last beyond a few games, or even perform adequately in any game? I doubt it.

We thought the same about Robbie Fowler and he passed, just, I guess. But will he bring in further crowds and interest next year, probably not.

Dwight Yorke, Archie Thompson and to a lesser extent Jason Culina have been marquees that worked. No-one else has?

Paul Ifill possibly, not Mile Sterjovski, Paul Agostino, Juninho, or John Aloisi, Joel Griffiths, not even Craig Moore.

So it's with interest, great interest we hear Nicky Carle is being chased by Sydney to be their marquee.

He's still young, has flair to burn and he'll be great, again, for the A-League. He fits the bill for a marquee, and he's Australian!

But few other marquees are risk averse. Most are too old, yes even Fowler, most strikers have lost their pace, see Yorke although he was a rare striker who could be equally effective in a new midfield role, but he was also young, so young he went back to play in the EPL!

Harry Kewell, Tim Cahill may be two genuine Aussie marquees, we don't have many, but if and when they come is a long way off. Like Ryan Giggs and Alessandro Del Piero most top players are good enough to play at the top...until they retire.

Defenders in my view should never be marquees. Most clubs can't afford them and shouldn't bother with them.

So what makes a marquee:
Skill and buckets of it.
Significant pace.
Media savvy.
Must be under 32 years of age.
Never a defender or defensive midfielder.
Even the non-football fan must be aware of who they are...before they come.

Which is a better or meaningful use of funds than the current system employed by clubs.

Nearpost National: A-League heaven

Download National Podcast
A-League is ramping up as the race is on for the finals spot and the first Asian Champions League spot.

We've got all the moves, news and views, quiz and commentary.

Why didn't Taj Minniecon's pass to Joel Porter get mentioned time and time again. Don't worry we didn't mention it either, maybe because he's not Brazilian, maybe because he's not called Dwight, Brosque or Bridge(s).

Pass of the season we reckon.

Anyway it's all here more football than you could ever want...and find out why Paddy's partner Amy called their first born Zara....it's always football on the nearpost innit!

Are Aussie Clubs getting a cut?

FourFourTwo are reporting Nicky Carle is being transferred to Crystal Palace for $2 million.

But are the Jets getting a cut?

Nicky will get 10%. That's a cool $200,000 as he didn't ask for a transfer, but what aobut the Jets did they have a sell-on clause.

Say 25%.

Carle earned the club $600,000 when he was transferred to Turkey. But did the Jets get any of the $1.2million transfer to Bristol City or indeed this latest deal.

Including the original fee The Jets could have earned $1.5million from Carle's moves.

Bruce Djite, David Carney, Nathan Burns, Michael Beauchamp, Dario Vidosic the list goes on.

Will their next transfers rake in the money for Australian clubs?

If not, who is doing the deals?

Nicky Carle is badgeless!

Source.

Nick Carle has been turning out in a badgeless City shirt for Coca-Cola Championship matches - but not anymore. Club officials were oblivious to the fact that the Australian midfielder was playing in the shirt, until a fan e-mailed the club.

Kitman Roger Barton has now sought a new home shirt for Nick - with a badge on - and the incorrect top has been signed by the 26-year-old for auction via their partners eBay. The match-worn shirt comes with a certificate of authenticity and was sold today for £265.00
(A$550 approx)

Rip your club badge off and see what your shirt is worth:)

English laughing at Australians...and I don't like it.

Nicky Carle (Genclerbirligi, Turkey) to Bristol City for $1.3 million, David Carney (Sheff United, England) to Anderlecht or Bayern Munich for maybe $3million or $4 million.

Only six months ago these guys were A-League players.

Someone is making a lot of money out of cheap A-League and Australian Internationals and it's not former clubs Newcastle Jets and Sydney FC.

Socceroo and former Sydney FC star David Carney scored the only goal in Sheffield United's 1-0 win over Premier League Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup overnight.

Carney has already turned down a $3 million dollar transfer to Belgium side Anderlecht and is waiting to see if reported $4 million interest from German giants Bayern Munich comes to anything.

It was only six months ago Carney was running around for Sydney FC.

Last seasons A-League Player of the Year and Newcastle Jets Tricky Nicky Carle has just moved from Turkish side Genclerbirligi to Bristol City (who?) after just six months. Transfer fee is $1.3 million.

So have these players improved in six months?

Not on your life.

Imagine what that money could do for the Newcastle Jets or Sydney FC.

If our players are going to leave, and clearly they are, then Australian clubs need to be able to increase the transfer fee.

Clubs should be able to use Nicky Carle and David Carney, both Socceroos, as an example of the standard of player in our league.

Nathan Burns, Bruce Djite, Danny Vukovic, Nikolai Topor-Stanley and co need to be signed to long-term deals then sold, if they must go, for a transfer fee somewhere significantly higher than the $50,000 Sydney were reported to get for Carney.

Come on Australia the English are taking us for a ride, and it hurts!

Nicky Carl: A man divided?

Nicky Carle: There's the clue

Nicky Carle and Carl Valeri are no longer Socceroo room-mates!

And I just couldn't resist the headline.

Carl Valeri is rooming with old friend Michael Thwaites at the Socceroos training camp in Singapore.

Got a better headline? Let me know.

Nicky Carle goes to Turkey

A-League player of the year expected to sign for Fenerbahce.

A loss for the A-League ? No doubt about it. However Newcastle are bringing in at least three other South American signings.

Keeping the stars of the A-League remains a problem, but the experience Carle gains in Turkey should help the Socceroos.

Is Nicky Carle making the right move?

Nicky Carle tried this for Australia!

Nicky, we love skill, but not there in the last minute of the game.
Try it home and then you'll know why you don't try it in the last minute when you are 2-1 down for your national team.

Still the game needs humour, and I loved the way he laughed at the end

Good on yer Nicky, your laugh showed me its only a game!

Did you see the flab on Saturday night?

Did you see the flab?

Did you see Diego Forlan stripped bare on Saturday after the game. Torso, toned and not an ounce of body fat. An athletic body looking razor sharp. Ready to run forever.

Nicky Carle, shirt off, a little chubby to say the least.

Now I’m no expert, but should Carle be leaner and meaner. His work rate was excellent this season in the A-League. He was fit enough to run 80 metres with the ball, in the last minute of a game against Adelaide, and still have the energy to guide the ball into the top corner.

But, would he be even better if he was leaner?

What do you think? Would Nicky Carle be more effective if he had less body fat. Or is it just his body shape?

Nicky Carle, why did you do it?

Nicky Carle

Oh Nicky you’re so fine you blow my mind oh Nicky!

Did you see what Nicky Carle did on Saturday night against Uruguay. Therre was one minute on the clock. He was in the box, in a fantastic position with room for across.

Australia were 2-1 down and instead of kicking it with his right foot he tired to put his left foot behind and do a fancy dan kick. He tripped and fell flat on his face tapping the ball out for a goal kick.

Carle had been wonderful since coming on. His touches were superb and effective. Recently players, confusing the opposition. You even felt we might equalise.

The A-Leagues player of the year gave Australia a different dimension in attack…and then his miskick.

“That’s ridiculous,” said Fox Sports Simon Hill.

Did Nicky Carle’s chances of making the Asia Cup squad disappear with that attempt at unnecessary flamboyance?

Should Carle be included in the squad?
