Mum, is that the Young Matildas?

"Who's that," said the young girl watching the team in Australian colours fighting the team in Chinese colours on the telly.

"That's the Matildas," replied the Mum.

Well I saw my friend Tom Sermanni defending the Young Matildas and I know some of the shenanigans that have gone on in games against the Chinese and North Koreans in the past but what the team did in response to a player allegedly being tripped, debatable from the footage in my opinion, what the player and team did is....

a disgrace.

No if's, no buts.

I'm sure there will be howls from those in the know, about how they were treated by the other teams, the other fans, even the referee. But it don't make it right does it?

Not for Australian national teams.

What provcation on a sporting field leads to this sort of rubbish. It might be acceptable to Australians in State Of Origin or AFL but in my view football, men and women's doesn't need it. Not at a National level of Division 9 level.

Our leaders have to balance between building team unity, support etc and out and out thuggery.

One Australian girl had her eyes opened that night.

And it was noted we lost the game!

Nearpost Radio: Women galore

Is this the only sports show where women outnumber men?

Is there any other show about male sports where there are more women than men on tv or the airwaves.

This is un-Australian and should be stopped immediately.

Tonight Lucy Zelic and Michella Bertrand join Aaron Walker on the Nearpost.
They cover all the A-League and talk Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar.

Also Tom Sermanni checks in from America. I rang him to get an update on the Young Matildas team heading for the Asia Cup. I thought he'd be in Korea or China but when he picked up the phone he was in Chicago watching the WLS League and it's Aussie players before heading to Asia! Small world.

Full-back scores hat-trick

Canberra United full-back Nicole Sykes scored three on debut for Young Matildas, she wore the number 9 shirt...hey isn't Ashleigh meant to be the striker, Nic!

7-0 the YM's thrashed Finland. Nice one!

VARESE
Tuesday 26 May 2009

A hat-trick of goals to Angela Fimmano and Nicole Sykes has helped the Westfield Young Matildas to an impressive 7-0 victory over the Finland U-19 Women’s Team in Italy yesterday. The feat was especially memorable for Sykes who was also making her Westfield Young Matildas debut.

After conceding two goals in the opening 10 minutes on Saturday, Finland made a better start to the second of their international friendly matches against the Westfield Young Matildas with some early end-to-end action.

Any hope for a change in fortune for the Finns was quashed in the 12th minute when Linda O’Neill hit a solid shot from 20 metres out which struck the cross-bar and bounced back into play. Nicola Bolger was on hand to capitalise on the rebound and tapped in from close range to open the scoring for the Westfield Young Matildas.

Three minutes later, the misfortune of Finland continued when they conceded a penalty for a hand ball in the box. Angela Fimmano stepped up to the spot and neatly placed her shot inside the left post, just out of reach of the Finnish goalkeeper Ina Suutari who had dived to the correct side.

The Westfield Young Matildas extended their lead in the 21st minute when a free-kick from Ella Mastrantonio on the right found Nicola Sykes on the edge of the 6-yard box. Sykes headed the ball into the top left corner to score her first international goal on debut.

Finland rallied for the remainder of the first half, creating a number of chances, but none that particularly threatened the Westfield Young Matildas goal.

The Westfield Young Matildas survived an early scare shortly after the start of the second half when Linda O’Neill had to clear the ball off her own goal-line following a goal-mouth scramble from a Finland corner.

Nicole Sykes added her second goal of the match in the 50th minute after she received a long ball on the edge of the box from Teigan Allen at the back. Sykes was able to turn and hit a great strike into the top right corner of the goal.

Two minutes later, Sykes completed her hat-trick in similar circumstances when Marianna Tabain played her in with another long ball from the back. Nicole entered the box at speed, and then hit a left footed shot, from an acute angle, which snuck inside the right post and into the goal.

Angela Fimmano scored the Westfield Young Matildas sixth goal close to the hour mark following some good build up play. Marianna Tabain played in Ashleigh Sykes out wide who in turn crossed back to Fimmano in the box. Fimmano then let loose a stinging shot, which was assisted by a slight deflection from a Finnish defender, and found the back of the net.

Fimmano scored her third goal of the game in the 70th minute slotting home from close range after Nicole Sykes set her up with a neat cutback from the by-line.

Finland continued to press forward in the closing stages of the match, but the Westfield Young Matildas defence held firm to keep their goal intact and record a morale boosting 7-0 win at the final whistle.

Westfield Young Matildas Head Coach Alen Stajcic was full of praise for his young team’s performance.

“It was a very good performance considering 9 of the 11 starters were aged 17 years and under.

“Our play in the attacking third and the quality of our finishing was especially pleasing.

“I’m particularly happy for Nicole Sykes, who scored a hat trick on her debut and has shown rapid improvement this year.

“But once again, still lots of room for improvement if we are to compete against the likes of Germany and the top Asian nations” concluded Stajcic.

The Westfield Young Matildas will now play the German U-19 Women’s team tomorrow (27 May), followed by the Inter Milan Women (30 May) at Varese and then the Thailand U-19 Women’s team (6 June) in Bangkok on their way back to Australia.

Young Matildas thrash Finland

Canberran Bronwyn Studman played the full ninety with the United Sykes twins on the bench.

And of course followers of the W-League will recognise most if not all of these players...and we couldn't say that before could we?

The Westfield Young Matildas have kicked off their European Tour with an emphatic 4-1 victory over the Finland U-19 Women’s Team in Varese, Italy, yesterday.

In hot conditions, the Westfield Young Matildas got off to the ideal start in the 4th minute when captain Tameka Butt played in Marianna Tabain on the left. Tabain, then beat her defender down the flank and shot from a wide position which saw the ball sail to the far post and into the goal to open the scoring.

Tameka Butt doubled her team’s lead in the 7th minute with a long range shot which found the top left corner of the goal.

The Westfield Young Matildas continued to create chances throughout the first half, but the Finnish goalkeeper, Katja Kankaanpää, was up to the challenge and made a number of crucial saves to deny the Australians.

The second half saw the Westfield Young Matildas continue to apply the pressure to Finland and came close to extending their lead even further in the 49th minute when Elise Kellond Knight hit a low ball into the box from a short corner but unfortunately was just out of reach of her attacking support runners.

Westfield Young Matildas goalkeeper, Sian McLaren, made her first real save of the match just before the hour mark, easily covering a Finnish header from close range following a free kick wide on the right.

Jessica Seaman scored the Westfield Young Matildas third goal in the 78th minute after being played in at the edge of the box by Karina Roweth. Seaman took the ball into the penalty area at speed and then buried a solid shot to the keepers right.

Finland pegged a goal back immediately after the restart when Lila Räihälä hit a shot from distance catching the Australian defence out of position.

Substitute Nicola Bolger completed the scoring for the Westfield Young Matildas in the 80th minute after receiving a pass from Samantha Kerr. Bolger then made a weaving run into the box and placed her shot neatly past the Finnish goalkeeper.

In the closing minutes of the match, Seaman, Teresa Polias and Bolger all had opportunities, but their attempts narrowly missed the target, and the score line remained 4-1 in favour of the Australians at the final whistle.

After the match, Westfield Young Matildas Head Coach Alen Stajcic was pleased with his team’s first match of the tour.

“We played pretty well considering the long travel a few days ago and the hot conditions in the middle of the day.

“Some of the younger players on debut did very well, in particular Teigan Allen and Courtney Beutel.

“It's a good start but we still have areas to work on and improve as the tour progresses,” concluded Stajcic.
The Westfield Young Matildas will face Finland again on Monday 25 May, and will then play the German U-19 team (27 May), Inter Milan Women (30 May) at Varese and the Thailand U-19 (6 June) on the way back to Australia.

Young Matildas in Camp

Squad details below

SYDNEY
22 April 2009

Head Coach of the Westfield Young Matildas, Alen Stajcic, has selected a 27-player squad for the training camp at Valentine Sports Park in Glenwood, Sydney, from Saturday 25 April through to Monday 27 April.

The camp, another in a series being conducted, forms part of the preparations for the upcoming AFC U-19 Women's Championships 2009 to be held in the Chinese city of Wuhan from 1 to 12 August. The Championships will also double as the qualification process for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup to be held in Germany next year.

"The camps are an invaluable part of our preparations for the Championships in August," said Stajcic.

"Not only is it important to give the players as much opportunity as possible to play together, but it also forms part of our selection process for the final squad that will head to China in August.

"Following the qualifications in Kuala Lumpur last year, the Westfield W-League gave us the opportunity to identify new players and gave them the chance to perform and develop over the 10 round competition.

"We need as much match practice together as possible to prepare us when we come up against the likes of China and Japan in August, two powerhouses of women's football," noted Stajcic.

Australia qualified for the chance to compete in the AFC U-19 Women's Championships late last year in Kuala Lumpur by winning three of their four matches to finish a convincing second in their group. The Championships will see Australia match up against Japan, China and Chinese Taipei in their Group B matches.
For further information on the AFC U-19 Women's Championships 2009, please visit the AFC's website www.the-afc.com.

Canberrans star in Young Matildas wins

Chrissy Walters played for the Young Matildas, most of whom are Under 18 against a China Under 20 side about to play at the World Cup.

China are a powerhouse in women's football but Australia won 2-1 on Saturday with a standout performance from Canberran Bronywn Studman, according to Coach Alen Stajic and 2-0 tonight.

Full report below. The team now head to Malaysia next month for the pre-Asia Cup Qualifiers.

Ante Juric will step into coach Sydney FC W-League side when Sydney's Head Coach Alen Stajic is away with the Young Matildas.

Westfield Young Matildas have successfully defeated China U20, 2-0, during the international friendly match in Canberra today.

The Westfield ‘Promising Matildas’ defeated China U20 2-1 on Thursday, while the Westfield Young Matildas also defeated their Chinese counterparts, 2-1, in Canberra on Saturday as well as this afternoon.

In today’s match, Tameka Butt opened the scoring in the 15 minute while Samantha Kerr secured the Young Matildas’ second goal in the 76th minute.

“This is another pleasing result, but possibly the most pleasing aspect is that there is still room for improvement,” said Westfield Young Matildas Coach, Alen Stajcic.

“Our defence held well when under pressure and the effort in both games was fantastic.

“For a lot of players these games were their first internationals.

This experience lays a good foundation, both technically and tactically,” said Stajcic

Many of the Westfield Young Matildas players will be in contention to participate in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U19 Championships to be held in Kuala Lumpur in October/November.

Aussie Women: Opportunities on the rise

Opportunities for Aussie women on the rise.

Heather Garriock has just returned from an invitation 7-a-side tournament in the UAE. And next she'll be off to America to play.

Young Matildas win, and Aussies off to play in USA league.
FFA Release below.

Three stars of the Westfield Matildas Sarah Walsh, Heather Garriock and Lisa De Vanna are in demand not only in Australia but also internationally.
In Australia, the Westfield W-League will kick-off at the end of October and comprises teams from each of the seven Australian-based Hyundai A-League clubs as well as Canberra.

The Westfield W-League offers girls and women the opportunity to play their favourite sport at a professional level and develop their skills even further.
But Sarah, Heather and Lisa are already impressing professional football associations overseas.

“Australia’s local talent is certainly being recognised and is in demand overseas which is great news for the sport and its future,” said FFA CEO Ben Buckley.
This comes as the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS), the women’s professional football league in North America, announce the results of its WPS Initial International Draft - with Sarah Walsh, Heather Garriock and Lisa De Vanna all making the list.

The draft listed Sarah Walsh for Sky Blue FC (NJ/NY), Heather Garriock for Chicago Red Stars and Lisa De Vanna for Washington Freedom.

They were joined by 10 players from Brazil, four from Japan and three from Canada and listed amongst some of the best players in the world.

The WPS competition commences after the Westfield W-League season has concluded.

And Australian women’s football continues to go from strength to strength with the Westfield ‘Promising Matildas’ defeating China U20, 2-1, during the international friendly match in Canberra on Thursday.

The Westfield ‘Promising Matildas’ team offers an opportunity for players to further develop their skills and show their capabilities at international level and in a match situation.

Westfield Young Matildas also defeated their Chinse counterparts, 2-1, in Canberra tonight; with the second match against the team to take place on Monday 29 September.

Young Matildas 3 Japan 3.

Kyah Simon and Emily Van Egmond score for Australia....

"It was a much better performance today. The score was 3-3 which isn't much different to the other day (Young Matildas lost 4-3 on Wednesday) but the quality of play was much better today. Kyah Simon (2) and Emily Van Egmond scored the goals, but we dominated for maybe 70% of play today. From that point of view the scoreline might have been disappointing," said Young Matildas Coach Alen Stajic speaking from the AIS training grounds in Canberra.

"Young Ashley Sykes, the Dubbo girl, had a one on one with a minute to go but the keeper put on a good save, so maybe we could have nicked it, but overall it was a much better performance today.

"We had five or six girls who are a real threat going forward. Kyah Simon (NSW) is fantastic, Emily Van Egmond (NSW), Young Sam Kerr (WA), Theresa Polias (NSW)and Ange Formida (SA) so we've got five or six who are really dangerous, who can strike from anywhere," reflected Stajic.

The Young Matildas have two games against China Under 20's at the AIS next month before heading for their Pre-World Cup Qualifiers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 15-25 October against Iran, India, Krzygstan, Thailand and Chinese Taipai.

The top two will qualify for the Asian Cup which also act as World Cup Qualifiers.

"This is only our third camp together so we're going well.

"The China games will be against a team a couple of years older than our girls, it will be a real physical hit-out for our girls against a side about to go to the Youth World Cup so that will be a real test." added Stajic.

The pre-World Cup qualifier competition is currently expected to end on October 25th putting some doubt on Young Matildas availability for the first W-League round.

The W-League is expected to start on October 26th. Date still to be confirmed.

Six Canberrans in the Young Matildas

Canberra had a strong representation at the recent Young Matildas Camp despite what you may have thought from reading this blog!

Steph Tokich Jennifer Bisset Rebecca Kiting Bronwyn Studman Christine Walters and Maja Blasch were all part of the recent Young Matildas camps.

All played a significant in the games during the camp. However The girls names didn't appear on any FFA releases.
