34 was a cracking game with Fark and the Silverfox bringing the Imperials up against my Eldar.
I felt confident with my wave serpents drawn up against to smallish armies of marines. I knew that the ravenwing Terminators traditionally died to massed firepower and I'd brought that to the table! Oh yeah I'm gunna shoot me some termina......
...Nope.
No I'm not. They are as tough as old boots! And then once you finally managed to kill the fecker with the stormshield who fends off all the Reaper missiles.....the Apothecary brings him back the next round. Git!
The terminators weathered a hail of shots round after round seized the objective and I just couldn't stop them strolling off with it. A solid win for the Imperials. I should have been much more aggressive and steamed forward.
We learned in this game that the cover save added to power armour makes Devastator squads hard to kill. Oh my yes they are hard to get rid of!

Game 33
Another round of Nu-40K at Urns.
This time Junts IG teaming with those pesky undying Necrons whilst The eldritch Farseer Silverfox added his eldar to mine.
I didn't bring a Wraithknight this time cos......god didn't they go on about it last time! ;-)
The Tanks of the IG made themselves a target for the Eldar lances partly due to the Necrons stubborn unwillingness to DIE!!!
Don't remember the result but we were enjoying the new rules.

Game 32
We've been playing pretty consistently all year.
Blogging about it? Not so much.
So to catch up.
Game 32
See that Necron flyer?
No you don't! First shots of the game! Tee Hee!
Nu 40K had arrived and a gathering of minds took place at Urn's on a Saturday night.
Urn and the Silverfox with Necrons and Khorne vs Me and Gareth with Eldar and Space Puppies. There was much leafing of pages and checking of stats but at the end we concluded that we liked it. Much simplified and it felt quick and easy.
The main thing we learned was just how horrible Khornate Berserkers are in 8th edition.
Absolute filth!

A happy little update.
I
got these finished finally last night
This
takes the tally so far up to 257 leaving me only 108 to complete the 365. I’m
particularly please to have finished these as they’ve been sat around undercoated
for ages and my Eldar have been a bit short of troop choices but not now!
Next
in the queue is some more Horus Heresy stuff as I’m not far off completing all
the marines Ive got for the Iron Hands and I’ve got a tray of terminators that
I want to do as there are some for both the Iron Hand and the Iron Warriors.
After
15 months my Kickstarter pledge for Massive Darkness arrived! Woohoo!!
Soooo
many figures! Now to get them painted but not before the game gets run out for
a try!

A break from painting figures for....
...a chance to paint even more scenery!!
Lots got done over the last month or so.
My TTCombat cargo ship got finished and weathered with rust.
Jolly good fun it was too!
I'm counting this as a figure because it is a vehicle and besides....I spent ages on it!
Tally up to 227!
Transfers got added to the Spartan Spaceship.
I need to go back and put weathering and wear damage on this now.
Finished off some skips for my city terrain set.
I was pretty pleased with how these turned out in the end. Relatively small and unimportant scenery pieces but nice to have them turn out so well.
A waste tower for either the junkyard or dockside.
The photo is rather washed out by the bad light in the photo but the rust effect powders do look great once applied.
At work I've started putting together some scenery kits that the Silverfox has donated into the group to be used. Not the greatest kits to put together from wargaming model mods but they'll be fine once they've been made and painted.
And.....then back to painting figures.
30 Dire Avengers.
Cos....you know.....you can't have too many Eldar. Right?
I've got 142 days left (To December 10th) to paint 138 figures. These Eldar will come off of that total shortly so I've still got several months to clear the last 109 to reach the magic 365 total.
After these I've got about fifty infantry figures to paint for 30K and then the plan is to get some superheroes painted to use on the nearly complete city terrain.
Lots of progress this year.
I also fallen behind with blogging about the games we've been having so I'll have to redouble my efforts there. With the arrival of nu40K we've been getting a fair few games in.

And so it begins
Junt, Urn and I have been egging each other on quite a lot
this year and the result seems to have manifested in to a challenge.
What challenge? To paint 365 figures in a year. This
obviously equates to one a day which seems daunting but casting my eye back
over the last year I seem to have painted well over 200+ items and that
includes big scenery pieces that have taken more than a week for each one. I’ve
also prepped and made lots of figures and scenery. Given that I often batch
paint big groups of figures the target of 365 seems less scary.
A year dedicated to clearing some of the backlog of figures?
Yeah I’m up for that.
Junt also mentioned that we should try and maintain momentum
with the gaming itself and suggested 52 games in a year. Given how easily life
distracts us from fun things, I think this is going to be HARD but hey…..I’m up
for that challenge as well!
The 365 figures that I’m hoping to get done include:
40+ 40K Eldar
140+ 30K Marines,
Mechanicum & Solar Auxilia
20+ Pulp City heroes and civilians
80+ Dystopian
Wars for both the KoB and PE
70+ Seraphon
50+ Dystopian
Legion for both KoB and PE
150+ Massive
Darkness figures yet to arrive from a Kickstarter.
Okay, that actually total in excess of 550 figures which
will be something of a reach to achieve but that’s the reason for the
challenge. Soooooo many figures waiting to be painted. I wish it were all that is sat unpainted in my study. Gotta start somewhere I suspose!
I was planning to start on January 1st but I need
to get cracking on the Seraphon for February and as such I’ve started the challenge
already. 11th December 2016 is the day of commencement and by this
time next year I want to have completed at least 365 figures from the list above.
We shall see.
The GoGs are heading for Nottingham on 10/02/17 and I need
to have an army ready. I have the BFG’s seraphon on loan under the condition
that I paint it and this is a convenient starting point. I’ve got 2 months to
paint 70+ figures and I’ll be happy to get 30+ figures done per month as it’ll
show me how difficult it is to keep on track.
Now the Seraphon should be a quick paint….
…but as usual I find a way to complicate the process. I’ve
gone for a wash effect for the main colour scheme but I wanted to have their
armour plates in a different colour but also tonally similar to the main
colour. This means adding a base colour to parts of the model prior to the
quick wash. Probably doesn’t actually take much longer but just feels like it
when you’re trying to do 37 in one batch! Probably will only take one more
evening to finish the first stage and then onto applying the wash.
Only one thing left to say.

22000pts
So the day of the Mega game arrived with much excitement! We had something in the region of 22,000 points on the table
The board had been set up on Saturday with many of the forces unboxed and ready to go on Sunday morning. We mustered, for the most part (eh Urn? ;-), just after nine but it still took us a while to deploy. The orks deployed first and it was a horrible sight to behold especially as BFG & the Silverback were using the Green Tide formation.
'Orrible right?
And that was just one sector of the four set up along the table. massed Orks supported by a stompa, grot guns, squiggoths and herdz of grotz to sit on the objectives on their side of the table.
The Eldar's knees were trembling somewhat as they camped across from the horde.
Thankfully the IG had brought there ever so courageous Ogryn to act as a fantastic distraction and speed bump slowing the tide of green down.
Mean while in the center sectors....
....it was quite-ish in the fields but in the city.....
....a fight was brewing up with a stompa led charge of Killer Kans supported by non-other than Ghazaghull and some of his equally ugly friends!
The fighting spilled out of the city into the sparsely populated Badlands where the IG and Eldar struggled to contain a grot battle tank and some Killer Kans with the forces they had in the region.
A win for the Orks 28 - 20 at the end of turn three. We played the Eldar turn four, as we had a bit of time, but they only pulled back to 28 - 25 so it is safe to say that even with more turns the Orks would have had it in the bag.
Great game and always great to get the big toys out!
'Til the next one!

A Little Progress
Layering the drybrushing has taken its sweet time but I am still hoping that these bad boys will be finished for Sundays game.
I just need to paint some of the details with contrast colours and pick out the Fire Prism's crystal sections which I think I shall do in a yellow/orange/red ink.

A Big Game....
..is always good motivation to get things done!
I've had the Fire Prism sat on my shelf undercoated for months and the poor old Scorpion has been languishing under my desk at work. Not a fitting place for such a lovely model. Anyhoo, plans for a mega game have galvanized me into getting these done. Its always the way that once you actually get started these things don't take long.
Saturday night I applied the dark blue mass dry brush to both of them and last night I introduced the blue and light blue drybrushes. Tonight I'll add the white to finish the look and get them matching the general theme for my Eldar.
Part of me is a little worried that the white will overpower the effect the blue has but I need to do it or they will look too dissimilar.

Whilst it continues to rain.....
....i have resolved to concentrate on putting things together in the hope that I'll have plenty to spray up when we finally see the back of these storms. If. It. Ever. Stops. Raining. :-/
Next up after the Invincible is a bundle of Eldar Shadow Spectres & their Lord. The GoGs had been kind and given me a unit of them as a lovely present for my
So its turns out I have two units of these lovelies! I'm looking forward to fielding these in an infantry only force as the Anti-Tank element given that they have a special combines fire special rule which has the potential for a unit of six to get upto Str10 AP2. Only one shot but yoiks! it gives you options on the battlefield. The guns are pretty cool normally with a focused and dispersed fire options like the fire prism. All cool stuff.
Now lets pray the rain stops soon so I can spray them!

Is that a Deadline coming over the Hill...?
Pah. We laugh at deadlines. Mostly. Well when they're not looking anyway.
Well we're in to the last week and all is coming together nicely. The downside is I won't finish all the highlighting in time but then I never expected to get any highlighting done so not bad at all.
I have now completely finished the following:
I've also managed to paint 3 layers of blue on 1 of the Wave Serpents. Going to try and complete the remaining 4 vehicles to the same "blue done" status before Saturday. Not going to rush the purple highlighting at this stage and will get that done later.
Current scorecard:
Spiritseer - complete
10 Wraithguard - complete
2 Wave Serpents - highlighting
2 Vypers - complete
Crimson Hunter - highlighting
Wraithlord - complete
Fire Prism - highlighting
And once it's all done the Wraithknight has been promised that he's next which gets me to 1500 or so points.
And then? Well let's see how the army does but I do want to add Prince Yriel purely because he's Iyanden...
I will try to get an army shot together before Saturday and then try and remember to use the camera at their first outing!

Eldar Vypers reporting in
Families are marvellous aren't they? I was informed Friday night that next weekend we need to go out on Saturday: but what about my painting challenge? - I asked. The reply is not quite printable here to be honest but suffice to say lots of pressure this weekend to get things done.
Did I succeed? Well every model is now painted to 3-colour standard and what's more I've managed to get some highlights involved as well!
When you were last here the 2 Vypers were not even out of their boxes. Well here they are all completed awaiting some basing. I may need to revisit some of the purple highlighting once I have a go at a bigger vehicle but for now I'm very pleased with these two.
And with so much time to spare I then set about highlighting one squad of Wraithguard. Again happy with how these chaps have come out so leave them alone now!
The scores on the doors then:
5 Wraithguard - basing
5 Wraithguard - basing / highlighting
2 Wave Serpents - basing / highlighting
1 Wraithlord - basing / highlighting
1 Fire Prism - basing / highlighting
1 Spiritseer - basing
2 Vypers - basing

I'm in charge!
A very wet weekend I think we can all agree and let's not discuss the FA Cup in any detail.
Meanwhile at the Eldar workbench the Spiritseer is done. I decided to highlight as I went with this chap and get him completed.
He has 13 colours all told and unfortunately the pictures don't quite show up the 3 yellows involved. I decided to go with original Iyanden colours for my command so that they stand out!
Really enjoyed painting him today and I'm sure he'll repay me by being awesome. Right?
Other progress this weekend: managed to get to Triple through the floods and picked up the 2 Vypers (we don't mention the Lord of Skulls I also collected - flippin huge).
And tidied up all the painting issues with all other models done so far.
The scores on the doors then:
1 Wraithguard - basing
9 Wraithguard - basing / highlighting
2 Wave Serpents - basing / highlighting
1 Wraithlord - basing / highlighting

Happy New Eldar
Happy New Eldar to everyone!
When I started this challenge back on 15 December I really wasn't sure it was achievable. However, the combination of determination to clear the shelves, field a new army in 2014, Christmas break and a very accommodating wife means I now think it is entirely possible. Hopefully not famous last words.
As the weekend dawns I have paint on the Fire Prism and Crimson Hunter as below
Obviously a large amount of tidying up to be done with the cockpits and in particular the Fire Prism's gun but 3 colours in evidence. I finally managed to use some yellow with the army and I suspect the Spiritseer will see some of that as well to help make him unique.
So what's the state of play then?
1 Wraithguard awaiting basing
9 Wraithguard awaiting highlighting / basing
2 Wave Serpents awaiting tidy up / highlighting / basing
1 Wraithlord awaiting highlighting / basing
1 Crimson Hunter awaiting tidy up / highlighting / basing
1 Fire Prism awaiting tidy up / highlighting / basing
1 Spiritseer on the painting table
2 Vypers on their way from the supplier
The plan this weekend is to paint the Spiritseer and get the tidying up done. By the end of the weekend after the Vypers need to be base coloured as a minimum. That then leaves the final weekend for finishing the Vypers and basing the army.
Must find some time to read the Codex as well....

Spirits be praised
Remember my target by end of 1st Jan? Well reached it today. Very happy indeed with the progress so far.
This means I can now try to get the Fire Prism and Crimson (Purple) Hunter completed in their 3 colour basics by end 1st Jan. If I can do that then I can spend a bit more time on the Spiritseer who is demanding non-speed painting as he's in charge...
So what have I achieved so far then? Well see the picture above.
All these models now have 3 colours so could go on to a battlefield near you. They need some tidying up, especially the Wave Serpents around the cockpits, but they are basically ready to go. If time is short then I'll just add some grey basing (same style as my World Eaters) and go with the army as they are above.
Hopefully I can find some time to get the other blues and purples involved and get them highlighted up like the sole Wraithguard below:
So 2013 ends with a hobby bang; let's hope I can continue this once 2014 dawns and work re-enters the frame.

Colouring in Eldar
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone.
The weather finally broke on Xmas Eve and out came the spray cans: everything turned a nice shade of Alien Purple courtesy of Army Painter. I'm pretty sure my face also went an interesting shade thanks to the wind...
Since then Christmas has interrupted and I even managed to take this army out for a spin on Boxing Day. Yesterday though was painting day and it took 4 attempts to get the colour scheme anywhere near something I like.
Here's the Wraithguard tester who has about 4 layers of paint on his gun before the blues you can see. Tell you I'm terrible at choosing schemes on the fly.
So yes he's purple and blue. Yellow just didn't want to work properly for me and as I'm speed painting I decided to go for colours I know work together... and I need to sort the cable out.
The body is Alien Purple with highlights of Genestealer Purple and Lucius Lilac (first time trying Citadel Dry paint and it's really rather good). The blues are Caledor Sky, Teclis Blue and then Lothern Blue.
At the minute the score is:
1 Wraithguard to be based
4 Wraithguard to be highlighted
5 Wraithguard to be blued
1 Wave Serpent to be blued
Spiritseer undercoated
Everything else at Alien Purple stage
2 Vypers to be delivered
Aim is to complete the Wraithguard, Wave Serpents and Wraithlord by end of Jan 1. Then I'm back to work so time will become a challenge again!

Rollin, rollin, erm, skimmin, skimmin, skimmin...
Well something quite momentous has occurred. On Saturday I picked up some pieces for my new Eldar army - Wave Serpents, Fire Prism and Wraithlord. As of today the 3 skimmers are built and ready for painting!
I know. Wargame items being purchased and built in the same weekend; I believe Armageddon is next week... poor old shelves didn't even see these boxes and several words were exchanged between these new upstarts and various items that have been sat on said shelves for years.
Anyway, here they are. Have to say the Fire Prism cannon is a monster!
As with the flyer I've decided to stick the canopy down ahead of time so I can paint over it; afterall what self-respecting Ghost army actually uses pilots??
One final question: how the hell do 5 Wraithguard and a Spiritseer fit in the back of a Wave Serpent?!
33 days to go.

I make whooshing noises...
When this bad boy flies
Decided to cheat with the canopy and fix it in place ahead of painting. This way I can save time by not painting the cockpit and pilot.
A fighter plane in the 41st millenium really won't need windows right? Probably use iOS to prevent crashes...
Ahem.
Now to design the base diorama or bits strewn about as we like to call it. Hope some decently dry weather appears over Christmas so I can get this lot sprayed!

Velc-Jenn go Airfix
Well OK not quite Airfix but building the Eldar Flyer took me back to my youth (yes, they did have model airplanes then and no I didn't have to hunt down dinosaurs for glue).
Nice looking model this Crimson Hunter and has gone together very nicely so far.
Oh and the Wraithguard have now been completed.
Finish off the plane tomorrow and then decide what diorama to build for its base as I have a few spare parts floating about...
