I was back in Las Vegas a few weeks ago and stopped by a local record shop and found this little compilation from Hypnotic. This sub-label of Cleopatra was pretty killer in the 90’s with electronic music giving us a mix of Trance, Goa & some Industrial. Their compilations were plentiful but hit-or-miss (I stopped collecting them because of that) and I did enjoy the lenticular cover fad they started. They had some of the big guns (FSOL, System 7, Juno Reactor) and some lesser knowns that sometimes surprised me but often felt it was all a bit vanilla. This is a pretty good one - let me know what you think.

I remember grabbing it at a Hastings in New Mexico of all places after being thoroughly disappointed in their selection of electronic music back in 98. A electro/dubby/downtempo delight overall, cool artwork as well.

To be honest I hadn’t listened to this collection in years. Actually haven’t really listened to Progressive Trance in a long time but this did bring back some good memories, especially disc 2. Lots of evenings at the clubs, red bull & vodka, 4-6 hours on the dance floor and an In-N-Out Burger at 5am. A few great regulars from the REACT roster and some personal favourites in the likes of Cygnus X, Oliver Lieb, Cass & Slide & Bedrock. It’s a pretty great collection & reminder of where electronic music was in 2000.

Pioneers of trance & techno, REACT was one of my reliable labels in the late 1900’s & early 2000’s. They kind of covered it all from their Reactivate to Real Ibiza series and Dope on Plastic to Drum & Bass Arena they had some of my most loved compilations. 

I can’t sit down and listen to D'n'B all day long but I do very much enjoy a weekly dose. This compilation was one of my first listens into the genre and still one of my favourites. Each disc mixed by 3 different “heads of industry” will take you on a groovy ride through the happening sounds of the early 2000’s. Turn it up and remember the days of dancing in front of the speakers…

It’s seriously hard to pick one of the 5 because each has a few standout songs and some non-album offerings. Not a bad one on here, even the goofy “Like Skippy” by the Peddlers is palatable. If anyone out there has the Fear of Blue album and would be willing to share, I’ve been looking for it for years.

Contains exclusive tracks from Scorn, Seefeel (3), a recording from the amazonian rainforest Shamans of Southern Venezuela and lastly a somber track with Timothy Leary asking you “Why are you here?”. Not something for a drive in the car but a spooky & crepuscular trip in electronica - headphones & dark room recommended.
