On the private site, information about the shares was minimal: artist & title; label info & year; cover artwork; sometimes a brief sentence if there was something of note.
I'll try to add a bit more commentary to these, don't know exactly how much.
Wnston Dub Project is an electro-Dub duo of Doctor D (Diego) & Vert from Toulouse, France formed in the mid teens. This album is set in a dystopian future after a catastrophe of unknown nature, we then follow the adventures of a nomadic group, passing through dark realities but also Utopian dreams.

A few years ago I was invited to join a private blog site that shared all thingd Jamaican. Most everyone there was a roots/reggae fan/collector. I'd been asked to take part because of my love for Dub, but as usual my weird taste in musick met with little favor. There was a few other Dubheads on the site & that was good enough for me. I never really have concerned myself with the numbers game. I share what I want & if anyone can appreciate...excellent. If not, well, to each their own.
A while back the site closed down because of politics of politeness. It became an issue with some members that folks downloaded but couldn't say thanks. My philosophy about courtesy is that you can't dictate it or legislate it...folks either do it or not. Whatever, it was fun while it lasted. Recently Version 2.0 started up & they once more asked me to join. This time we're sharing more current music of most any genre. I'm along for the ride, as long as it lasts?
The recent rebirth reminded me of all the musick I had shared there with little or no reception. I realized that NSS was obviously the place to share these treats, that in fact I owed it to you all to share them here, so thus the theme for this months Dubtember...the Re-ups from Rebel Roots. None of this is anything I downloaded from the site, but only material I personally shared that I have never featured here.
I'm going to start with the first thing I shared on that other site. It was quite a project that went over like a lead balloon. I'll see if it flies any higher here. It was truly a labor of love so here's hoping.
The share is entitled Scientist & his Sources.
It is in five parts with parts three & four both being broken into two sections. I have gone on to too great length here before about the succession of King Tubby. After Tubby's death, Prince Jammy claimed the title & renamed himself King Jammy. It has always been my contention that Jammy is a pretender to the throne.& the real heir to the crown is one Hopeton Overton Brown, better known as Scientist. In Dub parlance, Scientist mean Magickian & that Overton is. He burst onto the reggae scene in the late 70s with the panache of a David Blaine, with a reckless mixing style second only to Tubby himself. He began his career as a technician at King Tubby's Studio, repairing sound system amplifiers. Soon after he was called to the mixing board, as the engineer on call was absent. He rapidly gained a reputation for a distinctive mixing style.
We all know that a Dub track is basically the heavily remixed, mostly instrumental version of an existing song, created by stripping away most of the vocals while heavily manipulating the rhythm section. But a question often arises...What song??? What riddim???
I have taken the time to pair some of Scientists work with the original songs or riddims in what I have labelled Scientist & his Sources. Come along for a Lesson in Dub!

I play it for people all the time & they are not always impressed. No accounting for taste. I sez. If you don't have this platter, if you don't play it at least once a week. then you're no Dubhead imo. So pleez, can you share this one for me?"
Being as Nathan is one of the most loyal, long-time supporters around here, how can I refuse? But knowing me, here's a few (few???) words first...
Laika Come Home is a Gorillaz remix album released in July 2002. Unlike a typical remix album, it is all remixes by just one group, Spacemonkeyz. It contains most of the songs from the Gorillaz' first album, Gorillaz, but remixed in Dub & reggae style. The album features Terry Hall, U Brown, Earl 16 & 2D. The limited edition was packed in digipak, featuring two hidden tracks.
The album's title is a reference to Laika, the tragic Soviet hero space dog & the film Lassie Come Home.
The album contains mixes of every song on the original album except "Double Bass", "Latin Simone (¿Que Pasa Contigo?)", "Rock the House" or the bonus track "Dracula".
The Spacemonkeyz appear to be first referenced before the album in the "Tomorrow Comes Today" video. During the video, in the background, a poster can be seen with a pictures of monkeys with spacesuits featuring the caption "Laugh now but one day we'll be in charge".
The artwork is a famous piece of art by Banksy, the graffiti / visual artist. While the band was on hiatus in Beverly Hills, after touring for their debut album, they took a break from writing a script for their unfinished movie to appear at the Isle of MTV concert off the California coast. After their set, Murdoc was asked to sign a record he didn't recognize, which turned out to be the Spacemonkeyz album. It appears that 2D never locked Kong Studios up properly before leaving on tour.
The three escaped Soviet Space Program chimps, the Spacemonkeyz, entered & hijacked the master tapes in an attempt to contact Laika herself, who is supposedly their Space Program lab mate & leader. After discovering the record, Gorillaz shot one or two photos with the monkeys. They then disappeared. Murdoc is still angry at them for doing the album, despite the extra income he gets from it. He maintains that Dr. Wurzel, his archenemy, is behind the incident & complains about still trying to get monkey feces out of the carpets at Kong. Before the release of the album, the mix of "Tomorrow Dub" was released in the single of Tomorrow Comes Today in February 2002.
On the Spacemonkeyz remix, a whole host of guest musicians also contributed additional instrumentation to the record, notably reggae artists U Brown & Earl 16. The Spacemonkeyz certainly know their Dub; as even seasoned Dub fanatics have been known to admit that Laika Come Home's sound is truly authentic, There are elitist intellectuals & Jamaican eclusiveists that are unconvinced, but anyone with half an ear for Dub knows. Get the cool, cool shoeshine!

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the last forty years, then you know of Industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails formed in 1988 by Trent Reznor in Cleveland, Ohio. Reznor has been the main producer, singer, songwriter, instrumentalist of Nine Inch Nails for 28 years. That changed in December 2016 when Atticus Ross officially became the second full-time member of the band. Nine Inch Nails is most commonly credited with the melding of Industrial with pop sensibilities which helped bring the Industrial genre more in to the mainstream, although Trent has never identified NIN as an Industrial band. Here Reznor teamed up with Boys Noize's Alexander Ridha, a Berlin based DJ, producer, & founder of Boys Noize Records to create a live, studio, & remix album consisting of reworked versions of Nine Inch Nails tunes, a new version of "Soft Cell - Memorobilia", & a cover of the Atticus Ross "How to Destroy Angels - Parasite" song.

To finish off the rest of this fine month, I'm going to be filling a few request that I've wanted to give a bit more attention.
First up, when I was sharing Primal Scream, a friend of mine, Dale, emailed me.
He sez:
"I know you’ve been avoiding sharing Screamadelica because of its obvious ubiquity, but I’ve been searching for some time for Screamadelica Live. Do you have it & would you share it or send me a link?"
I do have & I will. I thought about just sending him a link in an email reply, but I had a couple other requests I wanted to address, so here goes. He sez "ubiquity", how could I not...
Screamadelica Live was released in 2011 for Primal Scream's tour for the 20th anniversary of 1991s Screamadelica. The performance was filmed at the Olympia Grand Hall in London on November 26, 2010. It is the final Primal Scream album to feature bassist Gary 'Mani' Mounfield (R.I.P.) who departed PS & reformed his previous band The Stone Roses later that same year.
Note: For this share I have included the tracks from the Rock & Roll Set as well. Also of interest is the fact that Primal Scream used a gospel choir during the Screamadelica songs, adding another level of musical creativity.
In August & again in October 2024 I shared Black Devil Disco Club. Since then they have become favorites to a whole new generation of listeners. I was so overjoyed when I stumbled across this little gem in an off-the-beaten-path second-hand shop that I occasionally frequent that I had to immediately share it here. What better way to thrill the throngs & also to be a precursor to the beloved Dubtember...
Christian Gregory Ingle is Christian Lunch, a minimal synth-punk musician from California. He lived in the Los Angeles area in the late 70s & lurked around the periphery of the L.A. music scene for a time. He released a couple of EPs on his own Fish Ranch label before deciding to move to Europe in the early 80s. With only the clothes on his back & a Teac 4-track for luggage, he came to rest in Hamburg, Germany.
He released his first full-lehgth on the Konkurrenz Schallplatten label. It is a refreshingly unique take on the evolving genre of experimental synth-punk of the early 80s.
