On any post, if the link is no longer good, leave a comment if you want the music re-uploaded. As long as I still have the file, or the record, cd, or cassette to re-rip, I will gladly accommodate in a timely manner all such requests.

Beyond the Barf Market

Continuing on with our deep dive into Glasgow noise that has been going on for many months, this time I'm featuring some more great music from Dawson, my personal favorite of the lot. Dawson's sound is Scot post-punk: scratchy guitar licks; funky bass lines; & tight paced drums.

As I sez back in February 2008:
''Before you had Lung Leg, Dick Johnson, or Pink Kross, there was the amazing Dawson. Glasgow's premier noise wavers are often forgotten in conversations about the Ex, Gang of Four, or the Pop Group…but their debut album in 1991 stands up to the rest.''

That was the introduction to Barf Market: You’re Ontae Plums.

Later when I was visiting all the countries of the world for the Musick Around the World project (introduced February 28, 2013 - premiered March 1, 2013 - ended back at the ole USA November 14, 3013), March 20th found me in Scotland sharing Dawson's second release How to Follow so that Others Will Willingly Lead (Oh my Godley & CreamCheese).

Today we'll go back to a pre-album-debut 7'' from 1989.

Filed under "Glasgow Noise" in my arbitrary filing shambles are some of my favorite post-punk bands: Dog Faced Hermans; 23 Skidoo; Stretchheads; Badgewearer; DeSalvo; Whirling Pig Dervish; Archbishop Kebeb…but number one in this group is Dawson. If you're not familiar with Barfmarket: You're Ontae Plums then you should search it out. It changed my life, it might change yours.

Dawson's four albums, various singles & an EP were all released on Gruff Wit Records, a label run by Dawson main man Jer(emy) Reid (labelmates included above mentioned Badgewearer & Whirling Pig Dervish along with The Keatons & Nostril). The album cover is spray-painted & inside is all kinds of crazy shite: posters; lyrics; political screeds.

Dawson's sound is Scot post-punk, scratchy-guitar licks, funky bass lines & tight faced paced drums. While side one is relatively straight forward Minutemenish punk tuneage, though slightly twisted, side two really ups the weirdness factor. I love this stuff.

Dawson are: Jer Reid - guitar; Ali Begbie - bass; Richie Dempsey - drums.

Barfmarket

UPDATE: This post was was re-uploaded 11/15/2013. Enjoy, NØ.

It's the weekend & I felt like a bit of a change of pace. You have to keep changing those 45s so often & I'm trying to unwind some before band practice at 5:00pm. I decided to play LPs, & one of the ones I grabbed was Dawson. I don't know much about this band other than their music, which says enough.

Before you had Lung Leg, Dick Johnson, or Pink Kross, there was the amazing Dawson. Glasgow's premier noise wavers are often forgotten in conversations about the Ex, Gang Of Four, or the Pop Group…but their debut album in 1991 stands up to the rest.

Of the bands mentioned, Dawson were closer in sound to the Ex or especially pre-Ex commies, the Rondos. Barfmarket...is a relentless attack with plenty of the Ex style political rantings. It all sounds quite brilliant still today.

If you are a fan of those earliest recordings of the Ex then this record is well worth having. All of the band’s output was great, but this is the most well-rounded effort.

Members : Jer Reid, Ali, Richie, Ceebe - sound engineer : Dawson - recording studio : Tower Studios
