On any post, if the link is no longer good, leave a comment if you want the music re-uploaded. As long as I still have the file, or the record, cd, or cassette to re-rip, I will gladly accommodate in a timely manner all such requests.

What Do You Call a Disciple of the Disciples?

Not adjacent, definitely Dub.

The Disciples are one of my favorite Dub outfits of all times & definitely my favorite UK Dub unit. I've shared them here before & will probably continue to share them here as long as I can carry on with this mess.

For the next couple shares I will be emptying out the Overflow of all things Disciple. First the duo from their beginnings, then Russ D. on his own, then as they team up with others.

Briefly, the Disciples were brothers Lol & Russel Bell-Brown. They were the musicians for early great Jah Shaka productions, started the Boom Shacka Lacka label / Sound System, the Backyard Movements label. At some point in their journey, Lol left the music game but Russ D has kept the fires burning to this day, still manning the Backyard Movements & releasing Disciples material.

Here's one of the greatest Dub albums in the Dub Universe...

These are synth Dub experimental pieces, 8 re-interpretations of material from the Disciples' previously released album Experiments on the THANK YOU label 2022..

The Disciples

The Disciples are a Dub roots crew that was formed in 1986 by brothers Russ D. & Lol Bell-Brown. Russ acquired some basic recording equipment in 1985 which started their productions. Shortly after this, they teamed up with the rising star Jah Shaka. The brothers were given the name The Disciples by Jah Shaka while producing exclusively for him in the mid-to-late 80s. They recorded four albums of instrumental dub for Jah Shaka Music label during 1987 to 1990.

The Disciples built their own Sound System in 1991. They began playing events across the UK in the following years. They played alongside Aba Shanti-I, Iration Steppas, & Channel One Sound System. Musical content was strictly Roots reggae & Dub music from all eras.

Their first label, Boom Shacka Lacka, was formed in 1993 for releasing heavyweight instrumental Dubs. During this time their tracks were featured on compilations for labels such as Virgin (MacroDub series), Dope On Plastic, Zip Dog, & Dubhead. Albums were released with artists such as Rootsman, Dayjah, & Sister Rasheda. They released their own album on Boom Shacka Lacka in 1996.

The Disciples are well known on the UK Dub scene. They have never been afraid of pushing the boundaries. From their reknowned Dub plates for Jah Shaka, their own Boom Shacka Lacka Sound System, to their tracks on the avant garde Macro Dub Infection compilations, to some more techno-tinged excursions, their versatility & dexterity is legend.

In 1996, The Disciples formed their second label, Backyard Movements, which was designed as an outlet for more Roots vocal leaning releases. The label has released works of both UK & Jamaican artists including Prince Alla, Michael Rose, Bunny Lie Lie, Lutan Fyah, Prince Malachi, Tony Roots, Danny Vibes, Christine Miller, Ras Mac Bean, High Priest, Anthony Que, & others.

Here's a strictly Disciples Dubwise release from Backyard Movements with intros from African Simba...

Afro Calling

The 3rd of this month I shared some UK Dub as a request from Frenz of NSS Afro.

The share spurred a long discussion in the comments about 80s Sound System & the rise of the British Dub scene, with much further music shared there. Particularly of interest was The Rootsman (Joe Bolloten) & the Disciples. Before January ends, I wanted to share two more items to wrap up that tangent.

First up is one that came out on The Rootsman's Third Eye Music label in 1997.

The Disciples meet The Rootsman - Rebirth, Third Eye Music TEMCD007, 1997.
