'BFG' from EdwinK: Humanity Needs a Hero!

The Terminators have done it again!  Skynet has sent a whole squad even further back in time than before in order to kill the ancestors of the leaders of the Resistance (Skynet's forte has never been originality).

With Sarah Connor less than a twinkle in her grandfather's eye, who is going to step up to save the future, and possibly even delay Judgement Day once again?

Here were have eight 28mm Terminator Endoskeletons from the Warlord Games/River Horse Terminator Genysis miniatures game.  These are described in their blurb as being in "two different posses, advancing and… relentlessly advancing!".  In practice, this means that some of the Terminators carry their BFG in their right hand and some in their left.  Box sets can now be picked up cheaply, and for me the Endos will serve as generic BFG-Wielding Robots.

Queen Victoria is from Westwind Productions'  Empire of the Dead range.  A nice, fun sculpt.

'Characters/Scene from' EdwinK: Doctor Who Companions

Sadly the vignette I bought with this round in mind is still languishing in the plastic bag it arrived in before Christmas.  In order to have something to submit, I've had to fall back on my old favorite for the Challenge - Doctor Who.

I therefore present you with six 28mm Not-Doctor-Who Companions (they're even more Not Not-Doctor-Who now as most are OOP since Warlord Games got the official licence to produce Dr Who figures).

First up, River Song - the Doctor's Wife 

River gets the 'Alien Sand Pit' treatment.  As the other characters are mostly seen on Earth, they are on the lawn of whichever English country house UNIT is currently occupying.

Then two versions of her mother...

The Amy Pond on the left is the only one of these figures not by Crooked Dice.  It's by Heresy Miniatures and still in production (they changed the name to 'Girl' and the colour of her hair in their pictures).

Strax and Jenny Flint

I'm not sure why I see the Paternoster Gang as Guinness drinkers, but I do.  Possibly it's easier to paint than a whiskey and soda...

And finally Captain Jack

Jenny is behind Jack to show that I broke up all the black by having the back of her waistcoat purple. As with most of my photos, that detail is lost.

'Nautical' by EdwinK - 'Deep Sea Divers'

For this round, 'nautical' as being 'of ships and the sea', I'm submitting these three Victorian divers and their shore-based companion,

There's very little to add to that. For my own amusement, I've tried to create a resemblance to Tintin and Captain Haddock.

'L'amour' from EdwinK - ‘Give pounds and crowns and rubies, but not your heart away’

 
There was once in a kingdom a family, now much reduced in status, who had loyally served the crown for some 700 years. Although the position held by the head of the family was now a sinecure, it was the custom that on reaching the age of 16, that the eldest son should present himself at Court to make homage and give account to the king himself. 

It came to pass that when one son performed this duty the king’s daughter fell deeply in love with him – for he was fair, strong of limb and well-spoken. Many an afternoon they spent together in the palace gardens, and they soon pledged their troth for one another. But the princess knew that her father would never allow the match. 

“Your family is ancient, but poor. You must show yourself worthy of my hand. Go abroad, win fame and bring treasures beyond my father’s dreams back with you. Then he must allow us to be as one. I will wait for you my love!” 

So the young man went a-questing. He fought many a villain and many a demon. And he gathered all the treasure he gained into one fabulous hoard. Finally, after ten hard years, he had enough wealth to impress even the king. He sent word to the princess: the reply shook him. 

“How lovely to hear from you. I often think of those foolish, carefree days of our youth. What games we played! Much has changed since we last met. My father died two years after you decided to go on your travels and I became queen. Naturally, my advisers recommended I find a suitable consort. In the end I married funny old Duke Berthold (remember him?). We have three fine children. You must visit some time.” 

The hero sat surrounded by his wealth, the letter in his hand – until he and it crumbled away from age. 

These are 28mm treasure tokens from Ristul’s Extraordinary Market (sold in the UK by Bad Squiddo Games). They are full of great details – magic swords, war hammers, potions, crowns, jewels and, above all, GOLD! They will come in nicely for Frostgrave. 

When I was painting them the line ‘Give pounds and crowns and rubies, but not your heart away’ went through my head and I had an epiphany – “This what I can do for the L’amour round!” So here you are – for never was there a tale of more woe than of that of love.

'Nostalgia' from EdwinK - Doctor Who Cybermen

Thoughts of Jenna Coleman to one side, there’s only one reason why a man of my age should be a Doctor Who fan – pure nostalgia. That being so, I thought it appropriate to submit these for this bonus round. 

Although they barely appeared during the tenure of ‘my Doctors’ (Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker), Cybermen are one of the more iconic of the Doctor’s foes. I’m not going to go into the multitude of design variations here – we don’t have space or time! So here is a squad of six 28mm Cybermen from Black Tree Designs: in two different poses and a Cyberleader. 

I’m afraid they’re a bit of a rush job (bonus round!), and I’m not too happy with the bases – they ended up as a mixture of moonbase and Home Countries sand quarry, but fans will appreciate that. There was a seventh, but his base was even worse than the others he’ll appear in a future submission.
