'Resistance' from DallasE: 28mm Plains Warriors

 

OK, taking a break from the grimdark to return to the project I SHOULD be working on, and that's the models needed for the Little Bighorn game I have planned for later this year. I have MORE than enough models from the Foundry, I just have to get paint on them.

The models here are a mix of packs - some from the Young Bloods, and some from the Dog Soldiers packs. Above L to R we have Bear Licks With Tongue, Three Fingers, and Wolf Looks Back.

Here are Running Rabbit, Goes Walking, and Little Crow. As you can see from the photos these models are all characters and don't really lend themselves to "assembly line" painting like the Seventh Cavalry models do. But I did the skintones the same on all of them - GW Doombull Brown highlighted with Ratskin Flesh. I hate the name of that paint but I think it gives a good Indigenous fleshtone.

Lastly we've got Pawnee Killer, Touch the Sky, and Plenty Coups. I did put warpaint on a few of the models but I may go back and do a few more as I like the look. As for the theme - Resistance - I think these models are spot on. If you know anything about the Plains Wars you know they were wars of resistance by Indigenous people against white military action and settlement. The apex of the resistance was of course the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where a coalition of Indigenous warriors wiped out - to a man - five companies of the US Seventh Cavalry led by Lieutenant-Colonel George Armstrong Custer (often referred to - incorrectly - as "General Custer" owing to his holding the rank of brevet brigadier-general in the Civil War).

Well there's the first bunch of Plains Warriors done. Only about 40 or 50 more to go...? Shouldn't be a problem this summer as long as I can stay away from Khornate distractions. We'll see.

Points:

9x 28mm infantry = 45 points

Resistance bonus = 50 points

Total = 95 points

'Toy Story' from JP - One of my earliest passions!

Back in 1965, Edmonton, Canada, when I was 6, my parents decided that the best way to nourish my english reading skills was with Classics Illustrated. I received these on every opportunity imaginable. One of the first, and I still have it, was:

 That's a scan of my copy, I'm rather attached to it. My love of mythology, ancients and fantasy, started here. At the same time, I came across this ad in comic books:

I immedeiately wanted a set (and the other ACW, AWI and WW2 sets too). Father had been buying me Britains and  Minot 54mms, so he was a bit taken aback by his son wanting cheap american 20mm plastics... Still, he got me a set. When the Greek set came out... well, Trojan Wars it was. Airfix was still two years away for me ...

I remain fascinated by Bronze Age warfare and it was a short hop in 1968 to the Hobbit and then Dark Ages Britain. I have raised multiple bronze age armies in 15mm, in the heady days of WRG and sold them all... rather stupidly. 

About 20 years ago, I started collecting Foundy and Redoubt Trojan War figures, quickly settling on the former as they were a bit more delicate. I lack opponents for the era, but I keep coming back to the collection, working away at it. The advent of Midgard rules has stoked the ageing flames.

I thought I'd 'dash off' some skirmishers and their bosses, just enough to see if I could still do it. Being rather slow with the brush, it's a good thing I'm retired and that my better half is busy with the financial closure of the firm she works for! 

So, here it is: 4 Mycenean warriors, 4 slingers and 4 javelinmen. 

Points:    12 x 28mm figures = 60 points

                Toy Theme            = 50 points

                                                110 points

'Empire' From ChrisW: Miscellaneous figures & empire theme (210 points)

 

My first post of AHPC XVI

I am happy to be back in the challenge and happy to finally post up something. This year I have the same goal as I did in my first challenge, to paint up all of my Back of Beyond stuff. Well in that first challenge I painted up two figures and a few vehicles. So three years later I am starting off with 12 Chinese Warlord figures, a massive increase in production, who knows maybe this will be the year! 😏 

Now this years challenge has started with a personal challenge as my back has been giving me some trouble, especially when sitting and painting. So while I am keen to paint stuff, I look at my painting area with rather mixed emotions, that whole pleasure/pain battle. 

At any rate I have gone through the first season, and 6 episodes of  season two, of  Babylon 5 (my usual background noise to start any major painting project) and I have emerged with a mix of items.

 First up I have 6 Foundry gladiators. [30 points] 

In an earlier AHPC I did quite a few of these and thought myself done with this genre, but these were at a really low price at a bring and buy (along with two chariots) and well I could not refuse. Now these are relatively recent acquisition, maybe only a year or two ago, unlike so much else that I hope to paint this year.

Next some Epic 40K Orc vehicles and Squigoths. [42]

So these are, of course, very old models. I picked most of these up during the 'the great sell off' of Epic miniatures back when GW decided to terminate the line. Many of them have sat in a box or up on a shelf still wrapped in their blister packs. A buddy of mine kept looking at them and rattling off what money they would bring in such mint condition. None of that for me it is only mon-nn-yyy, who needs that...No, I would rather have the 'joy' of trying to paint such small things at the age of 65.  

It seems to me that all these figures were just waiting for contrast/speed (etc) paints to come along. While these types of paints certainly help a lot I have not found them to be the one coat solution. But they get one started!

Some of the Imperial guard vehicles had been painted before (a pair of old Bane Blades & the 6 Gorgons) but I completely redid them for this challenge.

So, that is it for this post. I have decided to take a little more of a relaxed approach to this years challenge. In the past I have been a little crazed, trying to get as much as I could get done each week, staying up far to late to try and max out on production, but not this year. I may not even have stuff ready to post every week, who knows? 

Painted figure points are: 160

• 90 points for 18x 28mm figures 
• 70 points for 35x 6mm vehicles

Then there is the Empire theme round bonus of 50 points

So a total of 210 points.

Also, this week I count 3 squirrels.

Then one female figure (not certain if we are tracking that this year)
