'Toy Story' from DallasE: Indigenous Warrior, 1876

The main project I intended to tackle in this Challenge was the Little Bighorn. This year marks the sesquicentennial of the battle, the most famous victory of the coalition of Indigenous peoples over the US Army. It's also my 55th birthday this year and if all goes to plan I will celebrate by hosting a wargame of the battle. But first I have to paint the models!

I have a large collection of (so far) unpainted models from Foundry that will form the forces in the battle. I just love these figures as they are so well-done and characterful. This is "Goes Through the Camp" from the Dog Soldiers pack.

He was really fun to paint and went up in an evening. The secret sauce to the skin tone is GW Ratskin Flesh over a Doombull Brown base. I'd intended to paint 10 or so Seventh Cavalry on foot to accompany him but decided to just get him done and submitted before the Toy Story deadline.

And speaking of the Toy Story theme... I can never think of the Plains Wars without thinking about Marx, the company that pretty much invented the "toy soldier playset." Marx was in business from 1919 to 1980 but the toys I always think of were these playsets, marketed in the 1950s and 1960s and based on historical themes and TV shows (!). They were crammed with stuff and usually sold for less than $7USD. While Marx is long out of business the molds survived and newly made figures are still sold.

Anyway that's one 28mm infantry model for 5 points, plus 50 for the theme. More Plains Wars stuff coming soon, I promise!

'Toy Story' from Millsy - Gaslands - Pimp My Ride!

G'day All,

There are few things I spent more time playing with as a little tacker than Matchbox and Hotwheels cars. Endless hours were devoted to carving roads into the bush rocks around our house or constructing complex race tracks in the sandpit in the backyard.

When Gaslands made its debut I was hooked and have over time I've amassed over 50 cars, trucks and bike making 10 teams or so, plus a range of other vehicles. Quite a few have been painted in previous Challenges if you'd care to look. The opportunity to make another team was not to be sniffed at and so I present for your horror/fascination my latest editions...

High Roller

Riding high and covered in rolled gold, the High Roller will has fat wheels and an even fatter bank roll.

The Purple Perpetrator

Fast. Hard. PURPLE. Get too close and this bad boy discharges right where you least want it (from its custom oil dropper). I KNOW what you were thinking...

Pussy Galore

Pretty in pink. She purrs like a cat and she'll eat you alive. If you're lucky.

The Mar-a-Lago-mobile

Most cars have blinkers. Not the Mar-a-Lago-mobile, it has BLINGERS. Hideous, tasteless, gold blingers on every available surface inside and out. Because enquiring minds want to know there are 173 nail art "gems" that took 90 minutes to glue to this... THING.

4 x 20mm/1:72 cars = 60 points + 50 bonus points = 110 points total.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers,
Millsy

'Toy Story' from PaulSS - From Hot Wheels Max Steel to Gaslands Fusty Rucker

I think I was always going to do a Hot Wheels for this round, but I was tootling away painting more stuff for the Barons' War when I got a reminder at 1630 on 6th Feb that submissions for the bonus round need to be in tomorrow.

I've got a pile of Hot Wheels still in their blister packs - I'm constantly picking up something interesting when I see it - so I grabbed this Max Steel and my stash of bits and set to with the super glue and accelerator.

The ram, scoop and wheel spikes are all 3D prints while the driver is a wasteland warrior from North Star in a groovy Soviet era style gas mask, he'll need it with no windshield!

The whole thing was given a blast of Khaki primer and after allowing a probably less than reasonable time to dry was base-coated in several rusty browns and then given a wash of Strong Tone. Once that was dry I built up the rust layers adding final blooms of orange and bare metal and painted the driver in a mix of military greens. The exhausts and fuel tank were given extra rust treatment with some Dirty Down and then set about with Tamiya Weathering Powders before a blast of Matt Varnish and photos.

This rust bucket just made it over the line!

A 20mm vehicle and a 20mm driver plus the theme bonus points should add 69pts to my total.

'Toy Story' from StephenS: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe!

'By the Power of Grayskull... I have the power!'

G'day,

I have for you two iconic characters for anyone whose childhood spanned the 1980's. He-Man and Skeletor from the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe TV show that ran from 1983 to 1985. While it only ran for two seasons, the success of its toy line helped spawn a whole industry of cartoons designed to sell toys, toys I loved playing with as a young boy. Also, who can forget the helpful 'life lessons' offered at the end of each episode. It is one of those childhood shows that has resonated over the years.

There have been a number of re-boots over the years, and a new live-action film is in the works. The models I have painted up are 28 mm plastic models from CMON's Masters of the Universe: The Board Game -  Clash for Eternia.

It is always a blast to paint up something that is so nostalgic, and I thoroughly enjoyed working on these. I will definitely be off to see the new movie.

Two 28mm cavalry models and the bonus is 70 points.

Cheers,

Stephen
