Dertybird - 2009 - Pure Analog [192]

Flying in from Austin, Texas, Dertybird lays down its brand of blues based rock 'n roll on their latest album, Pure Analog. Following a self-titled EP and months of regional touring, this debut full length effort was recorded in early 2009. Upon first listening, the influence of the Allman Brothers, Warren Haynes, Gov't Mule, and Black Crowes is immediately apparent. But, after a repeat listening, the real Dertybird sound becomes evident. This is certainly a band that knows its roots and know how to use that influence to make it sound fresh and new.

Eddie Martin - 2010 - Folk And Blues [320]

Three decades of songwriting craft and instrumental skillbuilding come together on Eddie Martin’s latest collection, “Folk and Blues” - a rootsy mix of original songs and instrumentals with pure acoustic arrangements. This set adds a new exclamation mark on a career that shows no signs of slowing down. On the contrary, this creative powerhouse continues to push his musical boundaries, emerging here as both a tender folk artist alongside the tough blues artist we know. His 11th album features a slew of tunes stripped down to their essence, shining the spotlight on a Londoner’s transatlantic touring experiences and musical development, which combines Delta-hardened slide with pretty finger-picking dexterity in the Jansch-Graham tradition.

On Shoot That Thang, the Clarksdale, Mississippi, resident has retained his ability to spin tales that capture the folksy weirdness and humor of Delta life, but he displays newfound strength as a melodic vocalist with a versatile grasp of the six-string.

It is true that the versions here aren't radically different from the studio versions -- the little differences will only be of interest to guitar fanatics, who will be able to spot the differences between solos -- but there's enough energy and fire to his performances to make it worthwhile for Hoey fans who aren't guitar fanatics.

Fiona Boyes - 2009 - Blues Woman [VBR]

Fiona Boyes is a one-woman blues tent revival. Her pulpit is the stage, which she commands with the energy of an entire flock of worshippers. And her Bible is the guitar. With her acoustic and electric virtuosity and mastery of styles, she uses it as a righteous instrument to uphold the music’s tradition, even as her strong, distinctive songwriting moves it forward. And Blues Woman, Boyes’ second album for Yellow Dog Records, is one mighty powerful sermon. Its 15 songs run a rollicking trip through the contemporary blues landscape — from Chicago to Texas to Mississippi’s hill country and the Delta, all evocatively conjured by Boyes’ and producer Mark “Kaz” Kazanoff’s true-to-the-bone arrangements.Recorded in Austin TX, with a full band including special guests Marcia Ball, Pinetop Perkins, and Watermelon Slim, Blues Woman manifests the soulful, authoritative style of this native Australian and three-time Blues Music Award nominee to full effect. Jimmy Reed - 2000 - Blues Masters The Very Best of Jimmy Reed [320]

With his meteoric run of hits from early 1955 through late 1961, Chicago's Jimmy Reed reigned as the most popular bluesman of his day, rivaled only by fellow Mississippi transplant B.B. King. By the mid-'60s Reed was playing New York's Carnegie Hall and the Apollo Theater and touring England as a star. Reed's sweet, Delta-inflected singing complemented the cool, walking bass shuffles of his cleverly crafted songs, the finest of which are to be found in this tasteful contribution to Rhino's Blues Masters series. Included here are chart toppers like "You Don't Have to Go," "Ain't That Lovin' You, Baby," "Baby, What You Want Me to Do," "Big Boss Man," and "Bright Lights, Big City," all durable standards that influenced a generation of rockers from Bob Dylan to the Rolling Stones to Jimi Hendrix and earned Reed his proper place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Judge Jackson - 2007 - Judge Jackson [128]

Judge Jackson, the kings of the Inland Empire, who have played at every biker rally from Riverside to San Bernardino, have put out a self-released album that incorporates all the best aspects of traditional, balls-to-the-wall rock & roll. Led by singer/vocalist Todd McTavish, guitarist Lee Jackson, bassist Ryan Rogers and HITS’ own J.J. Garcia on drums, the band takes those hoary rock cliches of being an outlaw (“Bandit”), finding the right woman (“Hold My Hand,” with its affecting McTavish harp solo) or simply “Hangin’ On” and transforms them all into indelible truths by sheer force of real-life commitment. The band comes off like a cross between vintage Crazy Horse and AC/DC, creating a series of snapshots that are as timeless as this brand of rock gets, with a an honest-to-goodness flick-your-cell phone power ballad in “With You” and a touching tribute to war veterans based on an actual meeting in “Lift the Bottle.”

Johnny Jenkins - 2000 - All In Good Time [192]

Jenkins was born in Macon, Georgia, on March 5, 1939, and grew up in rural Swift Creek. He listened to R&B, hillbilly, and blues on a small battery-powered radio, and built his first guitar by combining a cigar box and rubber bands when he was nine. Left handed, he played the guitar upside down, a method he stuck with after his sister bought him a real guitar. Jenkins absorbed the music of his day, from Bill Doggett to Chuck Berry, and played at a local gas station for tips. While Johnny Jenkins's name never reached the heights of his contemporaries, his flamboyant guitar style backed the earliest recordings of Otis Redding and influenced Jimi Hendrix's technical flourish. Jenkins fronted the Pinetoppers in the late 1950s, had brief chart success with "Love Twist" in 1961, and recorded Ton-Ton Macoute! with members of the All-man Brothers Band in 1970 (released 1972). After 1970 Jenkins, bitter over what he considered ill-treatment by his manager, retired from the music business for the next 25 years. In 1996, however, he returned with Blessed Blues, another winning album featuring his heartfelt blues style.

Jimmy Rogers All Stars - 1999 - Blues Blues Blues [192]

Back in 1969, Muddy Waters and Otis Spann teamed with young guns Paul Butterfield and Michael Bloomfield to create Fathers & Sons. The idea was to match the sagacity of the "old timers" with the flash and commercial muscle of the upstarts. Nearly three decades later, Jimmy Rogers holed up in the studio with Butterfield-Bloomfield contemporaries Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and Stephen Stills; the result is Blues Blues Blues, the late singer-guitarist's swan song. Here's something to ponder: Waters was 54 when Fathers & Sons was recorded, the same age as Jagger when he cut his two tracks for this set. So maybe this collection should've been called Great-Grandfathers & Grandfathers. That said, Jagger's two contributions to Blues Blues Blues highlight this effort; he sounds invigorated dueting with the steady-rollin' Rogers on "Trouble No More" and gooses up Sonny Boy Williamson's "Don't Start Me to Talkin'" with studied nonchalance. With other rock-era titans (Taj Mahal, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page) and blues stalwarts (Carey Bell, Johnnie Johnson, Hound Dog Taylor & the Houserockers drummer Ted Harvey) along to lend support, Blues Blues Blues is a star-studded sendoff to one of the blues' noble patriarchs.

Mississippi bluesman John Paul Jones was born July 1, 1946 in Flora, Mississippi. His style of playing can be described as a genuine, raw Delta juke joint style. His raw and edgy guitar playing, his rough and gritty voice, his jagged singing, the use of the wah-wah pedal and the distorted guitar sound are clearly away from the blues mainstream and very often not much appreciated by traditional blues lovers. POLL - 1972 - POLL [192]

POLL - Maybe the most famous Greek psychedelic folk rock band of the late 60's early 70's era. Members: Kostas Tournas (guitar-vocals), Robert Williams (guitar-vocals), Stavros Logaridis (bass-vocals) and Kostas Papaioannou (drums). "Poll" was a pioneer of Greek pop music in the late 1960s. Poll enjoyed a number of nationwide hits, such as "Anthrope Agapa ", an anti-war song, composed by Tournas and "Ela Ilie Mou", composed by Tournas, Williams. While the lyrics of "Poll" were composed exclusively in Greek, the band's name was an English word rendered in Greek characters, Πολλ. This group had some commercial success in Greece with their melodic hippie folk-rock full of acoustic guitars, bongos and vocal harmonies. Their first album (Anthrope) was with some tasty fuzz guitars, bouzouki and sitar. While this came out in a sleeve made out of sacking, their second (Poll) included 12 pages of comics with Poll-members starring as super heroes. They disbanded after this.
THIS MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE GREEK BAND EVEN AFTER 40 YEARS. I WAS 12 WHEN I LISTENED THEIR SONGS AND I STUCK WITH THEM. THE LYRICS ARE IN GREEK.
