One Fine Blessing - Senior Birthdays January

Oh Dear! I have not forgotten our January Senior Birthdays!! I have just been super busy with working out some new things that will be taking place for 2012 here at The Coloradolady.....I am going to continue with the One Fine Blessing each month for our Senior Birthdays.

I have not decided on posting each month here on the blog or just utilizing the email mailing list for 2012. I am still thinking about this one.....your input would be great on this. Let me know if you would like the reminder here on the blog or just email. If you'd like to join, email me at the email address on my sidebar, it is under the button there. I also have a new button with the code for you to grab for your blog, it is on the right sidebar. As always, if you have a senior you'd like to include on the list, please email me before the birthday month. I won't be sending out notices after a birthday has past.

I am not going to be posting anymore for the "First, Fifth, Forever". That was my project for 2011 and I am going to retire that project. Not the Birthday cards, just First, Fifth, Forever.

Several new things will be coming.....I hope you find them encouraging, uplifting and thought provoking. Tuesday will be the kickoff for "Tell Me Tuesday"

First, Fifth, Forever: A letter writing journey: November 2011

 Welcome to First, Fifth Forever here at The Coloradolady. In case you are just finding this post or topic, this is a year long letter writing journey that started in January of 2011 for me. Each month, I try to send a letter to someone or card and let them know what they mean to me.

** This month,  I am sending out a couple of notes to some special friends near and far. I also will be sending a package to a mother who lost her precious daughter in September. The gift is a quilt, and I have a long letter to hand write that will be delivered with the quilt. This one will be bittersweet for sure.

Out of that endeavor developed another project to bring a little joy and excitement to seniors all over the country. A spin off from a dear facebook friend's project, I started this on my own blog.  Each month, (hopefully) I post about a senior s birthday and  leave the information on my blog and I also have a designated email for this. The month of October had a few birthdays to celebrate our seniors. I'd like to follow up on a few here today.

You may recall Tony, who had a Birthday on October 1st. He had been battling cancer for quiet a while. Tony passed from this life two weeks after his birthday. He had the best time with all the cards that filled his mailbox for his birthday celebration. I know there were other groups sending cards besides us so he really was enjoying all the mail. I was a bit sad when I heard this news, but the thought came to mind rather quickly, what a privilege to be able to celebrate this seniors last birthday even in a small way and show love and support.  I am forever grateful for that opportunity.

The end of the month was Hank's birthday. The cards came at a most opportune time for he had been under the weather the couple of weeks leading up to his birthday. He told me in an email that the cards came at a time his spirits were so low, and the cards really brought a bright spot during this time. How great to be part of that too!

I myself had a surprise at the beginning of the month....and it certainly did bring a smile to my face that afternoon!! Just look at this.....

 One of my blogging friends, Pipstitch, saw this cute postcard and sent it to me. She said she was not really on vacation, but saw it and thought of me!! I have this cutie on the bulletin board in my sewing room. What a thoughtful gesture, and it certainly touched my heart. Thank you so much Patty for sending it, it really brightened my day!

** This month,  I am sending a letter and several cards out. Sometimes it is nice to be reminded about how much someone means to you and thank them for being such a big part of your life.

A spin off from a dear facebook friend's project, I started this on my own blog.  Each month, (hopefully) I post about a senior s birthday and  leave the information on my blog and I also have a designated email for this. September had an early birthday and I was looking forward to telling you all what a blessing every one who sent a card was to this very special senior, Mary Ellen, but had to wait all month to do so.

The letter on the left is a thank you card from Mary Ellen. (Click the photo to read) She tickled me so in her letter, but the reality of her world weighed heavy on my heart too. Seems after her bills are paid for the month, she only has $59.00 left over for any personal items, cokes, or necessities. I am sure you are thinking like I am, that this does not go far and from what I understand, she get no help from her family. She is just there, in a home, fending for herself the best she can.

After I received this card, we impressed upon her to not spend her birthday money on stamps and stationary. That money was for her and we would relay the message to all concerned. Being the proper lady she is, that was difficult but we convinced her that was not what the money was for. So from the bottom of Mary Ellen's heart, she thanks each and every one who made her birthday one she won't soon forget.

This dear lady was so excited and with her money, she was going to buy herself a pair of shoes as the shoes she has been wearing were borrowed from a friend. She needed so many things, this certainly made a dent in what she was either completely out of or what she had been doing without for lack of funds. Blessings....they truly come from the unexpected and in small ways bring so much.

I also received a sweet postcard from Helen. Thanks are never necessary, as it is so fun to do this for others. I don't always get feedback from the cards we send and that is OK. If I do get feedback, I like to share it here each month. It serves as a reminder to me that small things I can do make a difference and it is not in the big things one does, but small ones that make such an impact sometimes.

And I could not do it all by myself! Thanks to all who have signed up to get the email each month, and who have sent me names to add to the list. You along with so many others are helping spread a little cheer into parts of our world that seems to have lost all hope and joy. That my friends...is a HUGE thing.

First, Fifth Forever: A Letter Writing Journey - August & Senior Birthday Report

August is over, and we are already into September. Goodness, where is the time going this year? Thank you for stopping by First, Fifth, Forever here on The Coloradolady. The fifth of each month, I post about our Senior Birthdays from the Month before and any mailings I personally did as well. I always have a link available in case you'd like to link in and share too.

First, off there were more birthdays in the month of August than normal, and I'd like to personally thank each and every one who took the time to send cards. They really do mean a lot to our seniors.

James, my father in law was on the list for August, and since his birthday was later in the month, I had not thought much about it. One day, he got two cards in the mail and he was put on alert. I'm positive his mind was working all the angles as to what type of scam was taking place. Seriously, that is how his mind works.....everyone is out to get him! Everything is a conspiracy theory and he tries to figure out every angle. Sharp as a tack my father in law....his mind is always one step ahead, that is why I said it is so hard to pull one over on him. Well, that evening, after the cards first started to arrive, he told my husband look at this scam....my husband did not remember about the birthday cards at first and asked his dad why he thought he was being scammed by someone sending him a card and a dollar? How was that a scam.

Then, my husband remembered about the cards for seniors, and honestly, my husband was just about to pop a seam with laughing....he just had to walk out of the room. After, we explained to my suspicious father in law what the cards were about and that they were not being sent by someone wanting to steal from him through the mail....well it was on!! He could not wait to get to the mailbox after that and see what was in there. He really had a good time with the cards and was chuckling when someone sent him quarters and dimes instead of a dollar! Funny thing about this is once a certain family member learned of what was going on, they even sent a dollar, guess they did not want to be left out of all the excitement. To say that was a shocker is an understatement and we'll just leave it at that. So....all in all, it was good fun around here for a couple of weeks.

Another recipient of Birthday greetings was my friend's mom Betty. She was so shocked and touched at all the lovely cards and messages sent to her along with gifts of money, that it brought her to tears. No words can express how wonderful she thought this was and it did very much make her Birthday special. She kept thinking of all the people that sent her warm wishes and money, and how they did not have to do that. I am so glad she enjoyed a little birthday cheer.

LaVoice was on the list for August too. Boy was she surprised when cards started coming in for her. She was not expecting to be a on the list herself, and it was fun to be able to pull one over on her as well....they will soon realize you have to get up pretty early to keep me from trying to pull a fast one! She had a ball with her cards as she loves to get pretty cards in the mail. Thank you all once again for making the birthday's this month a real bright spot for some deserving seniors.

I also this past month sent a couple of cards to some friends and started on a letter that I have not mailed as of today. Soon, I keep telling myself.....soon.

I'd like to say, take a moment and pen a letter or note to those who have meant a lot to you over the years and let them know how special they truly are. It is sad to think sometimes, people live their lives and never know how they touched others or what they meant to someone else along the way. It only takes a moment to let someone know how much they are/were loved and thought of and that they made a difference to others. And that....is always a good thing.

A Letter Writing Journey ~ Senior Birthday Update & List ~ Be Inspired

** This month,  I am sending a letter out that I have not had the courage to send.....I am working on writing it.....it is not easy. But I know in the big scheme of things, it is the right thing to do. If you have a minute....send a thought or two my way.....I need the courage.

Last month, several of the ladies who received cards where beyond, over the moon happy with their surprises and I am most certain made a huge difference for them.

I received an email from Maryann, she had emailed me her mothers name for last month. Her mom was just over the moon. Her is a part of her email......

I cannot thank you enough for adding my Mother's address.

She has received cards from all over the country & she phones me, gushing with joy.

It's been wonderful.  THANK YOU!!!!!

She is not the only one who were over the top happy.....All three of the ladies last month were certainly beyond happy with their surprises!!!!

James is my father in law. He lives alone, and is not in the best of health. He prides himself on people not being about to pull a fast one on him because of his sharp mind (he thinks)......I want to PULL that FAST ONE on him and flood his mailbox with birthday wishes! His health is not the best and he is not able to get out like he is used to doing as the heat makes it almost impossible for him to breath. This has not been an easy summer for him.


I'd like to give a huge Thank You to all how are spreading a little cheer one card at a time. You make a difference to each and every one of our seniors.

First, Fifth, Forever - A Letter Writing Journey for 2011 - July 2011

It is hard to believe it is the first of the month already....I swear I don't know where the months are going...but going by fast they are!

This month, I posted about the senior Birthday's here and If anyone would like to participate, please feel free to do so!! A simple card goes a long way for a senior these days!! If you are new to this endeavor, click on the "One Fine Blessing" on the right sidebar and view those post!

I also sent out several cards this past month as well. Several Sympathy cards, get well cards and a special not to a very special friend who always knows how to make me smile. Sometimes it is nice to take the time to drop a note in the mail and let those you love and appreciate feel how special they are to you!

First, Fifth, Forever - A Letter Writing Journey for 2011 - June 2011

 I can hardly believe it is June, six months into First Fifth Forever here at The Coloradolady. This past month was a busy one for me. I sent out lots of thank you notes to individuals who really made my day. The birthday cards went out as well. I don't know how many are actually doing this each month, but I keep it up in case someone is inspired to take part.

 I received the sweetest thank you letter in the mail from one of the Birthday Seniors that we sent out cards to last month. I was thrilled she took the time to write a note back and let me know how much she enjoyed her surprise.

 I also was greatly surprised with this adorable pattern for a quilted jacket sent to me by Katie Q. I was really touched that she thought of me and wanted to send me a surprise!! Thank you again Katie!!! I love it.

 This month, on my calendar for June, I don't have any seniors Birthday to report.....so if you know of one, leave a message in the comment section or email me...I'd love to have the opportunity to send a card and a dollar to a senior this month.

I'd also like to ask that you say a prayer for my friend, Pat who inspired this whole Birthday for Seniors project. She is the mother of a blogger and she has suffered a stroke and the prognosis is not good. She was found unconscious Friday and as of today, I don't think there is any change. Please remember Pat in your prayers and her family. She is the "Fine" in the One Fine Blessing here at Coloradolady.

And lastly, I'd like to leave you with this thought.....it is the little things in life, not the big ones that mean the most in so many ways. Take a minute to do something small for someone you know or a total stranger.....it will make a big difference. Have a great week everyone...be inspired!

First, Fifth, Forever: A Letter Writing Journey - April 2011

It is hard to believe it is April already. Time is marching on..... If you are new here, let me explain what exactly this post is about. This year, I challenged myself to hand write notes and letters to individuals who, one, have been important in my life and two, to bring a bright spot to someone's day. It has been most rewarding for me thus far. You can read about more of this, here. You can also click the archive on my side bar for First, Fifth, Forever to read what others have been doing with this project.

I'd like to thank so many who have joined in this effort, and also the One Fine Blessing effort going on here at The Coloradolady. I have received some very nice emails on this and I know seniors are being blessed each month.

Last month, was my birthday month, and I was surprised by some cards I received from bloggers, and it totally made my day. I'd like to say Thank You again, it is the little things in a day that mean the most. Truly.

This month, I have several thank you letters to write, and another "One fine blessing" Birthday card to send out. I still have a letter I have been putting off writing, and I think this month might be the month to do it.

First, Fifth, Forever - A Letter Writing Journey for 2011 - March 2011 - WITH VIDEOS!

Before you get too bored with my rattling on....there are wonderful videos below, please don't miss them!!!

Wow, it is already the fifth day of a new month...March. Hard to believe isn't it??? So, you know what the fifth day is for The Coloradolady blog, it is a recap and a thought on a new month and who you can bless with a hand written letter or card.

Since my post yesterday was a little on the heavy side, I am going to give you a thing or two to smile about today. But first, I'd like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for the heartfelt messages and emails. I know soul searching post make a few people I know very uncomfortable, and for that I am sorry. But I am a firm believer, that when someone reads what others feel, experience, and deal with, it helps to know they are not alone.....now on to a lighter note.

I have, over the past year participated in a "card shower" for a senior citizen having a birthday that has been hosted by a friend. I am here to tell you, what a blessing this is for our seniors and myself included. And after much thought on the subject, I decided to kick off a campaign of something similar here on my blog. I call this endeavor "One Fine Blessing" and if you missed the post, you will find it HERE. Please check it out.

I am still looking for senior citizens to add to the calendar for the rest of the year. I know you should know at least ONE senior that can be blessed with a surprise for their birthday. Please check out my POST here and let me know what you think.

So often, I have thought that just a simple thing of sending a card to someone, really was Not. A. Big. Deal. It takes such little effort on my part, but honestly, you really never know if it was just what that person needed at that very moment in time.

This January, was the second year I was fortunate enough to send Mr. Peak a card for his birthday. No, he does not know me from Adam, but I am sure he was thrilled with my card and my $1.00 I sent him. You see, I learned from the videos below that he loves to frequent garage sales, and what a neat thing to have a little extra "mad money" for that very thing.....I tell ya, a guy after my own heart.

Please take the time to watch these videos, Mr. Peak is just adorable, and his smile and chuckle certainly is contagious and made my heart just a little bit lighter. He and his friends and family are enjoying him opening all his cards too....these videos and Mr. Peak are a real testament to how something so small, really does brighten someone's day. I can only wish to touch so many more of our seniors with this project.

I'd like to thank Mr. Peak and his lovely daughter for allowing me to share these with you. I know you will enjoy them as much as I have and what a treasure to have in the years to come to be able to look back on these special birthdays and enjoy the moments again.

Along with a Birthday card this month, I have several thank you notes to get in the mail and another letter. This time, a long over due letter to someone who means the world to me. (that's all I am gonna say on that one)

First, Fifth Forever: A Letter Writing Journey in 2011 - February

Here we are already in the Month of February. If you missed the first post on this journey, you can see it here and here. I am thrilled to have you join me and make a difference for someone each month.

As discussed, I sent out two letters in January. As of today, I have not heard from either one of the recipients. I did take your advice and include the return address. I am not too concerned about a reply, that is not what this was about. I just hope I warmed a few hearts when they read my words.

January also gave me the opportunity to send a Birthday card to a senior citizen and include a dollar for their Birthday. I have a facebook friend who heads this up, and it is really a neat feeling making a senior's day with such little effort. I am most grateful for the opportunity to do that.

January also brought a wonderful surprise in my mailbox from a wonderful and very thoughtful friend. The day it came, was not one of my better days, and their concern for me and how in-tune they have been to my well being that was shown with that letter, was very special to me. There really are no words that can convey how special this wonderful friend and their family is to me. I was blessed the day we happened upon each other and formed a friendship.

Now we are here for the second month of this project I have set up for myself. I intend to send two more letters to special people in my life from the past. These special folks may not really realize how special they are and what an impact they had on my life, and ultimately my children's lives. There are so many ways one of them impacted my adult life and it would be ashamed to not let them know what a difference they made in my life. I am really looking forward to sending this one out.

Valentines day is this month too, and in true dog lovers fashion, I found some Dachshund Valentines......and these will be going out as well. I am also thinking of something that would be easy to slip in the mail for special people in my life. It is a lot to do, but I am going to try and get it all done.

First, Fifth, Forever - A Letter Writing Journey for 2011 - January 2011

 As promised on this POST, this is the first installment of First, Fifth, Forever. From February until the end of the year, this post and link will appear on the 5th of each month. It is my hope you will mention this on your blog, share this idea on facebook, grab the button and link in each month and join me in changing someone's life maybe forever with a heartfelt card or letter. It is very easy, there are no real rules, just send someone a personal hand written letter or card and if you wish to blog about it, link that post in on the said day. Don't have a blog? No worries, you can share in the comment section each month. It would be my greatest wish to have so many linked in by the end of the year with this project and feel we have made a real difference with bringing back the lost art of letter writing and the unspoken words from our hearts. Won't you help me get the word out?

This month, I actually had to really think about this only for a short while. You see, last year at this very time, I had the idea of sending a letter to someone and letting them know what they have meant to my life, if only for a short while and how they have never been forgotten. I had every intention of doing just that, but then I got second thoughts. What if they thought this was weird? What if they wondered what my motive actually was or was not? What if they thought this was about someone else and not really about them?

I quickly talked myself out of sending the letter. But that has haunted me for a solid year. So, I am sending the letter this month. I think in the world we live in we don't let the people who made a difference in our lives know their importance. Years and years have past since I last saw these people, but their memory of long ago stays etched in my heart always. They were important once, and I feel they have the right to know that. Luckily, the internet is my friend, and I was able to locate their address out of state. It will take a big leap of courage to send that letter, and frankly, I may not put my return address on the envelope, I just can not decide. I really don't want them to feel they have to respond to the letter, I just what them to know they were very important to me long ago. I hope that once they read my words, they will know what a role they played in my life and how important they have always been to me.

I am also sending a second letter this month that is way over due. Another someone who was most important to me and whom I have never forgotten from childhood. I have felt so sad thinking about how much time has passed and how quickly it has happened. There are wonderful memories I have never forgotten about this wonderful person and I hope it touches them in some way to get my letter and hear my words of how they made a difference to me and how much I have always treasured them from my childhood.

A funny thing happened when I was thinking of constructing these letters, suddenly memories I had long forgotten came flooding back and filled my heart with such a melancholy for they days of long ago. But along with missing the past, I was soon reminded of how I took something from each of these wonderful people with me on my journey in life and how time and time again, I have been reminded of each one in a different way. Also, each one of them are getting on up in age and I finally came to the realization that what a sad thing it would be to miss the opportunity to tell them what they meant to me and to my life. Some things should not be put off, but done when the spirit tells you to do them.

There are several letters I need to write just exactly like these, but the one I will send in February will take a bit more time to write. I already have one to send next month, and will be adding to that list as this month goes on.

I have a couple of thank you notes to write as well, so I will be sending out a few extra things this month. All hand written.

A Twelve Month Commitment - Will You Join Me???

A twelve month commitment to anything is really tough for most of us. But there has been an idea in my mind for a while, and it has sat on the back burner simmering for too long.
I can think of several people right now who would so appreciate a heart felt hand written card or letter send in the mail to their mailbox. Not a phone call, not a text, not an email, but a tangible letter they can hold in their hands and know that someone cared enough to take the time to send them a greeting.

So out of this idea, I am going to commit to sending at least one card or letter to someone once a month, most of the times it will be more than one. I am going to report once a month and will call the post:

FIRST, FIFTH, FOREVER That translates to The FIRST of the month, the FIFTH day, and a FOREVER stamp being used, or changing someone's life in an instant or forever, just by a little time and a card.

Letter writing is a dying thing, in our busy worlds we live in, we don't take the time for such things anymore. Is there someone who you have never told how much they meant to you? What about someone who goes out of their way to make you smile, is there a lonely relative who would love to receive a special greeting? I am sure you could think of a few to send.

I heard so many people this year say they were not sending Christmas cards due to the prices of things this year. I am sorry to say, I had to agree, but came up with an idea of buying a book of Forever stamps every other month and set them aside for the holidays. That way, once it is time to send Christmas greetings, I already have the stamps and it is nothing out of my pocket at the time. I think that is a great idea and very doable for most.

Since I just brainstormed this idea, the first post will not be until Friday, I have got to give my self a little time to get my letter out and decide who to send it to. 

And if anyone knows how to make a button for this project, I'd be so grateful if you could pass on the how to, I'd love to have one, but am clueless on how to do it!!!
