Tell Me Tuesday: Week 21

Welcome to Tell Me Tuesday.....First off the title is a bit deceiving.....it really is not about you telling me anything.... but answering a question truthfully and maybe telling yourself a little something you had not thought about.

I'd love for you to join me each week, and copy the question onto your blog and answer the question....and link back here. I am sure it will be interesting how there will be many different answers to the same question.....and hopefully give each of us something to think about as this new year progresses. My thought is so many people (including myself) are looking for some answers to various things. I have a feeling that the answers are inside needing to be jiggled loose and maybe a question posed a certain way will have a cause and effect in a good way. We will see how it goes! I have committed to this once a week for the whole year of 2012. I'd love for you to take the challenge with me!

I am keeping the rules simple...I'd love to watch this grow as the year goes on.

1. Grab the button on the sidebar if you like so others can find this new writing experience each week.

2. Once you link in, visit the person who linked in before you and leave them a comment. It would be great to visit and leave comments for as many as you can. But at least try and leave the person ahead of you in the link a comment of support.

3. Please link back to my blog and mention Tell Me Tuesday somewhere in your POST. That is it....easy.

Most of all, look at this writing experience with an open mind. Sometimes the questions will be hard...and require some thought. That is a good thing. Other times it will be easy. You can add photos, or whatever you like to your post. It is about you after all. ~ Thanks for joining me.....I hope you enjoy this each week.

Week Twenty-One Question:

What is something you don't want to regret when your are older???

If I was to be honest here, and being honest is really what it is all about.... In all honesty, there are lots of things that I do regret at this stage in my life....but going forward I can answer the question and not worry about past regrets.

I think for me, I don't want to regret getting to the end of my life and realizing that once I am gone, I left without leaving an impact or something tangible for those I love. I don't want it to be like I was here for however many years and then I was gone and not even the footprints of my life are left behind.

Have you ever known anyone who has left this world and although they were loved and are remembered, they just existed during their life and really once their life was over, there was nothing? It is hard to put into words, but I have known people like that, and I have known people who at every turn in life impacted others and left their footprints on the world around them and the ones they left behind. It is as if their presence still lingers even after they are gone.

I suppose there are lots of different ways to accomplish something like this, but it is something I am working on all the time. Is it something that will really matter to us once we are gone??....most likely not, but it is important to me for whatever reason.  I don't want to feel I let myself down when the time comes to look back on my life and feel like my footprints will blow away with the dust.

What about you?? Is there something you don't want to regret?

Week Nineteen Question:

If you were forced to eliminate everything in your life except what would fit into a backpack, what would you put in it???

In a world where we have so much stuff....what a question!......it took a little bit of thinking and not so easy to answer I might add.

For me, thinking about this today - I'd place in my backpack.......

* my phone
* a few pictures of my family
* a change of underwear ( I'd most likely try to layer as many changes of clothes I could on my body) truth.
* personal items ( toothbrush, hairbrush, rubber band, soap)
* sewing kit
* a journal and pen
* my choose joy canvas - because I would need to remember to do that
* the first quilt I made

Now, I would assume I was walking away with my backpack and four leashes with four doxies on the end of those leashes. If that was not possible....I'd then walk away with four doxies stuffed inside the backpack, their leashes and a water bowl and my phone in my pocket. I'd pack the family photos that I love in a pocket of the backpack. ( I sure hope I had a big backpack, like the ones from LL BEAN)  I'd never leave my pups under any circumstances....I could make do without any of the other stuff, but those dogs depend on me and I would not let them down by walking away.

*** this was an interesting one, because I have all of this "stuff" that I feel like I just HAVE to have. Ironically all of these must have things, that I do enjoy, would not have found themselves inside my backpack. I don't know about you, but this question really was another light bulb moment for me......

Week Seventeen Question:

What is one thing that people say about you that is not true?

*wince* you know sometimes these questions make me think about things that I would rather just leave alone. Point noticed.

I guess today I would answer this question by saying most people would say I am a good cook, some might even say a great cook. However, in all actuality I feel like I am just average at best. And honestly, if I even fall under the average category these days I am happy to hit that mark. Yes, I feel like I used to be a great cook, but lately not so much.

For example, this past weekend, I wanted to make a cake I have not made in a long time. I have made it for years and it always turned out great. So this weekend, I proceeded to make that very same cake.....it was not fit to eat. That cake from scratch was so heavy, I feel like if you had dropped it on your foot, you could have injured yourself. Not to mention, I messed the icing up not once....but twice.....such a waste.

This is not the first time I have noticed things not turning out like I know them to be. Sometimes, recipes I have spent years making are just not quiet right. I always secretly wonder what is the reason behind this.

And if I am honest here, there is always a thought playing in the back of my mind that reminds me of a time when my grandma who was a fantastic cook, but in her failing years, she lost all her cooking abilities. There is always that fear that lurks in the back of my mind and I wonder is that what is happening to me?? Fear is a terrible thing and I really can not believe I have put this out here today. Sigh. Logic tells me I am fine, I feel fine, I know I am fine.....but it bothers me to not have things turn out like I know they have done time and time again in the past.

So you see why I feel that is the one thing people say about me that is not so truthful these days. I am sure they say lots of other things too.....don't know how much of that would be the truth either...but today....this is on my mind.

Week Sixteen Question:

What is the best part of being you?

Goodness.....not easy to answer. First, I need to  define "You"

"You" does not mean, mother, wife, teacher, friend, daughter or any other descriptive word....yes those are all things that we are...but not really the "you" part of that question......

I am going to think on this question....and answer later today. Something to think about and look at your "real" self in order answer honestly.......be back later!
What are your thoughts? What is the best part of being you???

~ After thinking on this today, I think the best part of being me is the fact I am able to take the hard things that come my way and still weather the storm until better days come. There have been lots of times I felt I would not make it and that my ship would sink, but somehow, with either sheer grit and determination I always pull through. It is not easy as I have found that there are not really enough people in my life that truly understand or take the time to try and understand to lighten the load. It is more of a pull your boots up by the straps and move forward in the muck if you want to see and smell the flowers again. Is it easy? No. But I have done it time and time again. I know some who don't have it in them and never seem to get to the better things in life, they stay in the mud. I am thankful that there is a part of "me" that is able to do that. I am glad I have it in me to know that sunny skies and beautiful flowers are always around the corner.

Week Fifteen Question:

What's one simple way to make life less complicated?

The question this week,  provokes a lot of thought for me. Life is complicated at every turn sometimes and other times, we truck right along with smooth sailing. There are many different components that inflict complicated situations often times.

For me, I think one of the simplest things to do is to let go of expectations I may consciously or subconsciously place on others. I know I often experience great hurt from expecting certain things from others. I tend to measure my self worth against the failed expectations of  others actions and it makes for a lot of complicated and strained relationships. It is tough for me as so often I question why it is I am willing to do or go the extra mile for them and they often do not even acknowledge me.

I heard a statement on television the other night that was an aahhha  moment for me.  It went something like this...."Just because you love with a gallon size heart does not mean that a person with only a pint size heart can or will give the same love in return. They just don't have it in them. Instead of beating yourself up with actions from the pint size love that a certain person can only provide, it is time to surround yourself with like people...gallon heart loving people."

That made a lot of sense to me and helped me to realize not to complicate things by internally feeling like others actions are directly influenced by my self worth. It is just not so. Letting go of expectations that others can not, nor will never live up to sure will help with a lot of complications I have faced in the last few months.

I don't know if this answer truly makes life less complicated, but for me, it should help with a lot of complicated feelings in certain relationships I have been having. What about you?? How would you answer this question today?

Week Fourteen Question:

Fill in the blank:

I am lost without_____________________.

As I sat and thought about how I would answer this question, several things came to mind but somehow they never really fit the question.

When asked that question, the most honest answer would have to be  I am lost without my glasses.

I  have very recently noticed that if I leave the house and forget my glasses, I can forget reading price tags on anything. And well, being the type of person who likes to treasure hunt, it just does not do much good not to be able to read things like price tags. Likewise, if I don't have my glasses, menus along with anything smaller print can not be read.

I guess it is a good thing the street signs are in large print, because if not, I surely would be lost in every since of the word. I guess that is the thanks I get for either wearing my glasses so much that now I can not see without them (nearly), or it is the fact, I am getting older and old eyes can't see so well.

Whichever the reason...it really is a burr in my behind lots of times. More times than not, I leave the house with just my purse and keys and it is not until I get to the store that I realize I can not see half of what I need to be about to see and read. It is annoying and I wonder how that creeped up on me so suddenly. I am pretty sure I am seeing crystal clear what was meant by the old saying "It's tough to get old"

What about you? What are you be lost without??

Week Thirteen Question:

What is one thing you were given as a child that you still cherish today?

Oh. My. I. am. late.  Thankfully, it is still Tuesday!!

I have talked about this before on my blog, but the one thing that I still have that I was given as a child is a lion that belonged to my great grandma. When she passed away, I was allowed to keep this stuffed animal that she had. I always had a fascination with this lion as it always sat on her bed. I am thankful that I understood the significance of this gift as a young child and took exceptional care of him.

He has always been kept in my cedar chest, safe from little hands that may have wanted to play with him. This is a real treasure to me.

What about you? Do you still have a item  you treasure from your childhood?

Week Twelve Question:

What  should you avoid to improve your life?
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Oh goodness, this is a loaded question and as much as I hate to admit certain things here on the blog I guess the best way is to just say it and be done with it. As I sit here and type these words, I feel a since of dread for writing what I know I am going to say. I am sure some won't think it such a big deal, but for me it has been a great source of mixed feelings and emotions.

Honestly, I think the one thing I should avoid and at the very least limit to at least a minimum is my time on Facebook. I know you have read before my mixed feelings on this subject, but recently it seems to have been pushed to the foremost front of my mind and I still seem to have a love/hate relationship with the whole social networking site.

One of the things that Facebook does for me in a negative sense is I find I am always comparing my life with others I am friends with. When I read their status updates many appear to have perfect lives full of things I find my own life lacking, perfect friends, perfect families, perfect relationships, perfect happiness. I find myself more times than not, comparing and wondering why I feel at times my own life comes up short when compared to what I read on this social network site. I do have enough sense to know that most of what is put on Facebook is only a fraction of what is true or at the very least you could compare it to looking through rose colored glasses all the time. I know that all of this information is not as perfect as it seems, but yet it still makes me question my own life and it often leaves me feeling not so good about myself.

Another thing is I guess there is an unspoken etiquette surrounding Facebook that I just don't seem to grasp.  Is it expected of someone to read each and every status update and respond appropriately? Whether it be hitting the like button or pouring out a sugar dripping comment to stroke someone's ego? I can not tell you how many times I read comments left on a status update and think, "seriously......." I guess I just don't get it and it causes me lots of pain and frustration in my heart. Almost like the pain of  my teenage years and feeling like I walk around and hold my breath and hope I don't say or do the wrong thing. Don't get me wrong, it is not that I don't leave comments to status updates, but I don't feel the need to leave one every single time someone has something to say. Maybe this is just a problem I have and maybe that is where my focus should really be directed more towards myself.

Facebook for me has taken the personal relationships away and turned it into cyber relationships. I miss the phone calls from friends, as it is just easier and quicker to check a Facebook update and say something there. I have thought about this a lot, and I know the convenience of Facebook has just taken the calling a friend out of the picture. Most of you know how big I am on Birthday cards...especially those for seniors and I work on keeping that important aspect alive today. Facebook notifies you when someone has a birthday or anniversary and all you have to do is type a couple of words and send the message. Don't have to buy a card, or a stamp or take the time to send a personal message anymore...it is as simple as a click of a keyboard. It has become unpersonalized. I have been guilty of this very thing and it does not make me feel good about myself in any shape form or fashion....I am better than that and I know I am.

I really have been looking at this very subject a while, and for all the new cyber-relationships that have been reunited on this social media site, it sure has a lot of undesired feelings of not measuring up for me.  Maybe if I stepped away from this for a while, I'd be able to get my own life and thoughts back in perspective. I know it is not right to always compare yourself with others, and I try not to do that, but for some reason, Facebook is the negative avenue for this very thing in my life. I am sure if you read this silly post to the very end, you are thinking..this lady is off her rocker...and I often wonder if maybe that is just the problem... But I do know that I need to focus more time on what I have to offer and what my journey is about and leave the influences that cause my train of thought to veer off track alone for a while. I am not sure if eliminating this would improve my life entirely, but it sure would improve some of the feelings I have been having surrounding it at least. Seriously if anything you are doing in your life causes distress and negative feelings inside yourself...it is time to re-evaluate what you are doing and make a change. Yep...need to take my own advice......

Week Eleven Question:

What is the best part of your average day?

I'd have to say the best part of an average day or any day for me is dinnertime. I usually always have supper ready when my husband comes home and we are able to sit down at the table and have dinner and talk about our day.

We have always had dinner at the kitchen table, even when the kids were small and growing up. When the kids are home, we eat at the table. It is very, very seldom that we eat anywhere but the kitchen table....maybe Superbowl Sunday but other than that, we really don't.

I think today, far too many families do not practice this habit and it is really an anchoring of the family to each other and a way to communicate without a lot of distractions.

I enjoy cooking, so I enjoy preparing a meal for dinner, and enjoy the fact someone comes home and enjoys eating it and enjoys a few minutes reserved only for us.

On the flip side of that I have to confess, there are absolutely days when I really don't feel like cooking and if I was honest, my husband would be just as happy to go out to eat. However, I have found that eating out is just not the same as eating a meal at your own kitchen table.

We usually reserve Saturday's to eat lunch out somewhere and we have done that for many years. It is the evening meal that we usually have at home. I guess it is more of a habit than any thing else, but it is a habit that makes my heart happy and it really is the best part of my day. What about you? What is the best part of your average day?

Week Ten Question:

What is the one lie you keep telling yourself each and every day??

________________________________

After thinking on this, I guess the honest answer to the question what is the one lie I keep telling myself each and every day would be "It does not matter."

I hear myself say that over and over almost each and every day about one thing or another. It can be the smallest of thing like an extra bite at the dinner table and I think one more bite will not matter. Not true...it does. Or it can be the lack of choosing not to deal with hurt feelings that come from other peoples actions. I always push those feelings aside and away from my heart and say...it just does not matter. Another lie. It matters maybe not to others, but to myself, it matters greatly.

One thing I have learned over the past couple of months is that it is getting harder and harder to believe that lie I keep telling myself. I have come to a place that it does not trick my mind any longer. I have gotten to a place where I catch myself thinking...well, yes it does matter and even if no one knows....I still know the truth. Yep, working on that little lie that has really lost its place in my life. Sometimes, though, it still creeps in one way or another.

Week Nine Question:

Is it out of reach? Or have you just not stretched yourself far enough?
 _________________________________________

This week, the question is very interesting. The first part reads:  is it out of reach? What is the "It" part of that question for you? For me, the "It" part could mean a number of things. The answer really should be nothing is ever out of reach if you really want it.

I hear over and over people that reach the "it" in their lives tell others how they too can get to the same point. The are quick to tell us all what we need to do to get there and while it seems so very easy hearing them speak of how they got the "it" they wanted, I wonder why it is not easy for others.

I think we all are individuals who want to walk the same paths as those who have achieved what they want in life, but honestly we are all not the same. I know for myself there are lots of variables that have kept me from stretching myself like I know I can. For others, there is a lot of muck in their lives that keep them from stretching to their full potential and achieving the goals the want. The hardest part of this equation is to know if you want to follow a certain path or reach a goal that you have set for yourself you must first be willing to walk through the muck.

Sometimes, people will hinder your growth or achievement with negativity. It does not matter if you have the best idea or intention in the world, if the people who you surround yourself with are not individuals to offer support and encouragement it will be hard to follow through. Many people are just sitting waiting to grab on to your shirt tail and let you make things happen for yourself so it will benefit themselves. That has happened to me so many times that so many great plans were tossed away because the burden of carrying everyone else should I reach my "it" was just more than I could carry. I know some of the best things in my life were stopped cold with negative energy others offered when I presented an idea I had about something. They may have not had the gumption to say it to my face, but they sure talked it to death behind my back and sent the negative vibes my way. I don't care what anyone says, negative energy effects us all.

Stretching yourself means you have to believe in yourself, that is key. It means when others don't see the dreams you have the way you do, it is ok. Stretching yourself sometimes means not sharing your plans but working towards them on your own. Stretching yourself requires eliminating the negative energy from your life and replacing it with positive things and influences. Stretching yourself means knowing it is possible to reach whatever "it" you are wanting to get to in your life. It is knowing you may have to fight to get there, but pray for the strength to endure the hard walk to get where you want to be. Stretching yourself means fighting all the "what if's" in worrying that something might not work out and start worrying about the "what if's" if I don't do this.

Out of reach? No......just need to visualize yourself holding that "it" in your hands and stretching over the muck that has been holding you back.

What about you?? Thoughts??

Week Eight Question:

What three words would you use to describe the last three months of your life?

At the end of the next three months, what three words do you hope to be able to use to describe your life at that point?
 _________________________________________

The three words that would describe my life in the last three months would have to be routine, challenging and stressful.

The three words that I hope will describe the ending of the next three months of my life would ideally be accomplished, productive, exciting.

Side note: I thought this would be easy. Not so. Very thought provoking for me. I found myself trying to use words that described my "feelings" and not actual words that truthfully described my "life" not anything else. Interesting for me.  What about you? What three words come to mind when asked this question?

Week Seven Question:

What is the most unique thing you own?

_________________________________________

Being a person who considers themselves to own lots of "things", "junk", or "treasures" when I first read this question my first response was, "Oh....easy one."

However, that is not necessarily so. Lots of things popped into my mind but in all actuality they were not all that unique. Sure lots of these were treasures and most specifically treasures only to me, but throw in that word unique and they sorta fell short on the list. I have seriously never thought about what the most unique thing that I own might be.

But after spending a few moments thinking about this and doing a mental inventory of all my "things" I finally came to the conclusion that my most unique item I own would be the scrapbook from Cripple Creek dating back to 1913. It really is most unique and interesting and a real treasure. I am sure most of you if you have been hanging around here a while remember this book. If you are new to my blog and don't know what I am talking about, you can read about it  here and here. There are lots of pictures in the earlier post of the inside.

Not only is this book very unique, as I am sure there is only one in existence, but it took me on a journey to locate and find out what happened to the girl who owned this scrapbook. Thinking about this today, I realized I never shared the rest of the story here on my blog. If you'd like to know how the story turned out, come back here on Thursday for Vintage Thingie Thursday and read the (at least to date) last chapter of this treasure hunting experience.

Have you ever thought about what the most unique thing you own might be? What makes that particular thing unique? I bet if you stop and think about it, your answer may surprise you. Be sure to link in below and share your unique item with us.

Week Six Question:

What songs bring you back to really great moments in your life?

_________________________________________

This happens to be a good question for this week with the Grammy's just over and the recent events in the media this past week.  At first, I thought...."easy enough"......but as I sat and thought about it, really thought about this question....I was surprised at some of my choices!

Some of the songs that bring me back to really great moments in my life would have to be.....

1. The Chair by George Strait - This is the song that reminds me of my husband and when we first met. Every time I hear it it takes me back to those very early days in our relationship. It always makes my heart smile.

2. Lookin for Love (from Urban Cowboy) by Johnny Lee - this one takes me back to my very young days. Young love is always associated with this song and evokes fond memories.

3. There Goes My Life by Kenny Chesney - This one always takes me back to the time right before my daughter was going to be leaving for college. My husband is a manly man but he has a sensitive side and a big heart. He asked me one day had I heard that song on the radio, and he seemed a little misty eyed....once I heard it....my heart smiled. When I hear this song, for some reason it is a reminder of the wonderful heart my husband has, and his rough and tough exterior is no match for what is really inside. It always makes my heart smile.

Music does have a way of taking us back to a time of good or bad. I really had not thought too much about that until I read this question.  How would you answer the question? What songs evoke memories from great moments in your life? What songs make your own heart smile? Have you ever thought about it??

Week Five Question: fill in the blank....

I need to practice_____________more often.

_________________________________________

Fitting for me this came up this week. In a lot of ways. This won't take much writing this week for me.....

I need to practice having patience with people who are thoughtless towards others more often.

But in all honesty....patience has left the building around here and that is just the truth. Plain and simple.

How would you answer that question today?? There is a link below for you to write a post and share!

Week Five Question:

What is there too much of in the world???

_________________________________________

This week, there are so many things that would fit this question but the very first thing that popped into my mind was there is way too much litter in the world.

When you take a drive in your car, a walk in the park or spend any time at all looking around the landscape in which you live, there is letter in every direction. People all over the world has trashed this planet with everything from cigarette butts to broken appliances and everything in between.

I often wonder what it would be like if everyone decided to take control of this situation and clean up all of the trash that is strewn about our lands?  I can only imagine it would be a difficult job in disposing of all that trash at once. Litter has taken over everywhere and every clean surface of the globe. It is shameful really.

What about you?? How would you answer this question.......the possibilities are endless really and hard to pick just one.

Week Four Question:

Would you rather lose all of your old memories, or never to be able to make new ones?

_________________________________________

Oh. My. Goodness. This question for me had so many variables when I first read it. I could answer one way if I was sure of this or that. Likewise, I would answer the other way if certain things were a given and sure thing. However, that is not how the question read so without adding any variables to the question, and just reading it for what it is was hard for me to answer. Hard.

But after a little soul searching If I was posed the question "Would I rather lose all of my old memories or never be able to make new ones", I'd have to say I would opt to lose all the old ones. I sorta like the option of starting with a blank slate.

There is an understanding that in losing all the old ones would mean losing all the good memories along with the bad. I'd really hate to lose any of my good memories, especially the ones of my children and of all the things and people I love. But in losing those memories, all the bad memories would be erased as well.

Sometimes, I think the bad memories are a hindrance for me. They are always just under the surface as a reminder of a failure, bad decision or a reminder of things I could have done differently and certainly should have. The fear of making bad decisions is a constant light that flashes in my brain and draws from the fall out of mistakes made in the past. It is a crippling thing for me.

In knowing those would be gone from my memory bank, and new memories would be what I had to draw from, maybe now that I am older the new memories would be made with better choices. And assuming my family would still be here we could make new memories. I suppose in a perfect world that would be so.

Then as I type this out the thought comes to mind, without all the old experiences in my memory bank, who's to say I would not make the same mistakes again?? I am sure I will be thinking about this one today. For me, it really stopped me in my tracks and gave me something to think about. Interesting.
