We went camping at Camp Dick Friday, August 19 - Saturday, August 20th. Our awesome and very brave friends Staci and Scott and their two little boys and Becca and James and their little girl and boy came with us. It was ridiculously rainy and we weren't able to make a reservation (we tried in May - every weekend was booked!) so we just showed up. The campground sign said the sites were all full but we had people coming up to meet us so I went to tell the campground host to tell our friends to find us at the next campground down the road. There is no cell reception up there so it is always a risky business trying to communicate about how to find people if campground you are planning to stay at is full. Miraculously, someone had decided not to use their site last minute. The host had just found out before we got there so she gave it to us! I am so glad we'd stopped to talk to her. It was a great site with plenty of room for all three tents.
Hanging out in the car at the campsite while daddys set up tents.
Pretending to drive like daddy.
William and Adam braving the rain
Sam, like every boy I know, is a pyromaniac. Hopefully he isn't as insane with his pyromania as my brothers were. It might just be genetic...
It was so chilly and damp, even when it stopped raining but it didn't stop us from having a great time.
Nina showed up with a beautiful butterfly drawn on her face. Becca and James had taken the kiddos to the folk fest in Lyons before coming up to camp with us.
Bx, James, Don, and Fynn having fun in the rain while I hung out in the dry tent with the other kiddos.
Adam's face cracks me up. He was so mad William wouldn't let him sit on the sleeping bag with him.
Finally, the sun broke through and we saw a beautiful rainbow. It was the first rainbow Sam really noticed. He loved it and wanted to watch it
Do you see the cute little gray hooded figure pointing at the rainbow. He watched it 'til it had long disappeared and then talked about it all night.
Hurray for the sun coming out! Camp Dick is by far our favorite campground. It is so beautiful!
The boys of course were fascinated with Don building the fire.
Enjoying some of Don's homemade salsa.
Sam's snack of choice.
Sam absolutely loves Nina. They just laughed and had a great time. We all ate a delicious dinner of brats and coleslaw thanks to Becca and James. Yum! Who knew South Africans put peach chutney on a bratwurst? Don said it was really tasty. I wasn't feeling very adventurous but I believe him.
Trying to keep these kids away from the fire was a constant battle.
Sam is further from the fire than he appears to be. We finally settled with telling him he could throw sticks in to the fire from a distance, he just couldn't get too close.
Sam all bundled up and ready to sleep in his new sleeping bag. The sleeping bag was a nice idea but he once again ended up sleeping in the sleeping bag with us. Maybe next year he'll be excited about the sleeping bag.
We woke up and had breakfast. I had made a sausage egg casserole which I attempted to warm up slice by slice on a skillet. I just ended up burning the outsides to a crisp and everyone had to dig out the middles. Not my finest camping creation but it was nearly edible.
According to Bx and Nina - if you lick your finger and hold it towards the smoke, the smoke will change directions.
Becca, Me, and Staci. I'm so lucky to have such great friends.
William and Adam playing in the field by our campsite.
Cute kids.
Becca and I took the kids on a hike and enjoyed the beautiful scenery and little streams. Staci and Scott headed home and Don and James went mountain biking.
Nina changing her baby's nappy.
I love Nina.
Sam didn't want to ride in his backpack anymore so Nina put it to good use carrying her baby doll.
The boys back from a good ride.
Then Bx and I got to go out for a beautiful ride. It was wonderful!
Another fabulous camping trip! I am already looking forward to next year.
