I am writing a BOOK!

That's right, fellow blog fans! I've decided to write a book about painting wargaming collections. It will be going to Kickstarter this Friday, March 16, at 3pm EDT (which is 7pm GMT, 12pm PST, and 6am on the next day for those of you on the east coast of Australia).

What is going to be in the ARMIES & LEGIONS & HORDES book?

I'm glad you asked. I'm going to be writing down a lot of my thoughts and philosophies on the army building and painting process in the hope that it will be helpful for everyone who has occasionally struggled with finishing an army project. I'm going to take an in-depth look at Inspiration, Goals, Expectations, Planning, and Motivations - with the goal of helping the reader to be able to map out a path to success for their own projects. This book will also be "game system agnostic", the principles described can be applied to any wargaming project, regardless of genre or period.

I'm also going to be putting together some photo-heavy features of armies and projects I have completed over the years along with a few completely new projects. The list looks something like this:

• Sci-fi Mass Battle – 40K Genswick 33rd Rifles
• Sci-fi Skirmish – Dark Age collection and terrain
• Sci-fi Big Project – 40K Warlord Titan
• Fantasy Mass Battle – Warhammer Nuln Empire army
• Fantasy Skirmish – Fabled Realms collection and terrain
• Historical Mass Battle – Napoleonic British collection
• Historical Skirmish – WW2 American collection and terrain
• Post-apocalyptic Skirmish – This Is Not A Test collection and terrain

What is the Kickstarter for?

I would really love to see this as a printed book. I'm running this campaign to help fund the creation of a 120+ page hardback book, so that's really the focus. I want to keep the campaign very simple and focused on "The Book". There are six reward levels - one is the obligatory $5 pledge for thanks, and the other five are for a PDF version of the book or a printed version of the book, or some combination thereof.

Stretch Goals are focused on adding some of the other armies that I have created over the years.

What prompted you to write this book?

As a part of the services I offer through Dave Taylor Miniatures, I was laying out a rulebook for a friend (Disposable Heroes II for Sinister Laboratories). I had also taken the photos and was editing the book as I went. The key thing I remember was thinking "I'm really enjoying this. Seeing all the elements come together. This is something I really like doing."

So, with the skills to take photos and design and layout books, I just needed a subject to write about. They say "write about what you know" and with over 10,000 miniatures painted since 1991, the topic seemed pretty obvious. This book isn't a "How to paint..." book. There are plenty of those on the market from great painters. This is a new kind of book that focuses not on the techniques, but the psychology and planning behind big projects.

What's next?

I'm sure I've forgotten something, so when I think of it I'll post again, but really all I'd like to do know is ask you to pledge your support when the campaign goes live, and share the hell out of it with all of your wargaming friends. If we can make this a great success, I'm going to be able to explore lots of other cool ideas with other talented folks and bring their dreams to life too!

Check the campaign for ARMIES & LEGIONS & HORDES out on Kickstarter from Friday, March 16th!

WARLORD - Some nice photos!

It has been two weeks since AdeptiCon and I'm not sure I've had a chance to breathe since then. April is shaping up to be my busiest month ever! Anyway, I promised you good folks some photos of my Warlord - Domitor Fortis, Warlord of Legio Crucius - and here it is. I hope you like them.

I just realized I didn't take any detailed photos of the base. I'll get that done when I take some photos of the banner I'm working on for this beast : )

Cheers

WARLORD - Finally, the Warlord Titan Build is complete!

Ok, so after six long and occasionally grueling months the Warlord Titan (Domitor Fortis of the Legio Crucius) is now ready to walk!

Last night at AdeptiCon, I was able to reveal the Warlord to my assembled Liber Titanitcus class. There was a lot of chat about how I built the beast, anecdotes about the trials and tribulations, and quite a few very good questions along the way.

I'm very happy with the result, and at the same time I know there are a few things I can do to improve  it. These stages will be applied at a later date (and I'll put together a video once they're done).

Domitor Fortis stands ready, alongside Primaris Secutar.

The Titan Transport.

The Titans, and many other items, all packed for the show.

My thanks to Mel Bose and Ash Barker for their advice and support along the way in this YouTube build endeavor.

My thanks to my patrons on Patreon for their belief in the value of hobby content.

My thanks to everyone who has followed along and offered their support and comments along the way.

My thanks to Duane, Jake, and Murph for schlepping that enormous crate from Baltimore to Chicago : )

Cheers

WARLORD - And now the Decals!

My apologies for the delay on this one. Food poisoning sidelined me for most of Friday and Saturday. A total bummer. So, once I could move further than ten feet from the bathroom, I set to applying the decals to the Warlord and added some extra chipping and weathering around the armor panels. I'm pretty happy with how everything has turned out. I hope you like it too : )

The next video will appear on Friday morning. A spin-around of Domitor Fortis , as well as a spin-around of my Reaver, Primaris Secutar, after the big reveal at AdeptiCon on Thursday : )

WARLORD - Stencils and airbrushing can really give you a better result!

The videos are coming thick and fast now as I'm feeling the pressure to have it all done in advance of AdeptiCon. Stencils and decals arrived on Monday night from Fallout Hobbies, so yesterday I took a bit of time to get stuck in and finish off the armor plates : )

Not long now!

WARLORD - Detailing the base!

Here we are again. Another quick video showing my latest progress. This time it's the base.

I've added some extra detail in the form of a traitor militiaman and loads of abandoned equipment, and finished off the detailed painting and so on. I think I might have to add a few more traitor bodies to really drive it home.

I hope you like it : )

WARLORD - Part 18 - Starting to paint the base!

Some more painting on the Warlord. Despite my cold/cough, I forged ahead and laid down some paint on the base and did some more detail work on the torso, including painting the rear and adding some plates.

Very exciting stuff!

WARLORD - Part 17, More Painterly!

Another week, another update (although I expect there'll be two next week).

This time I've painted about 70% of the torso, and it is really starting to come together : )

I hope you enjoy.

WARLORD - Part 16 - The legs are almost finished!

Hi everyone!

Apologies for the delay in this video, I recently spent a week in Northern Ireland with the Beasts of War crew, filming loads of videos for Coll Mini or Not's game Dark Age (but more on that in a future post).

Anyway, progress has been made and once I have the torso painted (next week), I'll be in a really good spot (I hope). I should have those Fallout Hobbies stencils soon and then I can really get into the nitty gritty of the painting : )

It has been a while since he Titan has claimed any of my blood, but I figured I should show you these scratches, acquired while I was painting the legs. It turns out that the resin sandbags on the base have some sharp corners to them. Of course, two scratches means I wasn't too careful after the first time : )

Have a great weekend!

Cheers

WARLORD - Part 15 - Some more paint on the legs!

Hi everyone, here's the latest update on my progress. Sadly, it's not as advanced as I would like, but it is a step or three in the right direction (toward completion).

I hope you enjoy this quick video : )

WARLORD - Part 14, now with painted weapons!

I'm very grateful to have been able to squeeze in quite a few hours of painting yesterday and this morning. Now, instead of staring at sooooooo much silver, I've been able to make a dent and finish off (almost) some quick wins. Sometimes it is best to pick some low-hanging fruit ; )

I hope you enjoy my ramble and that most stuff stayed in frame.

WARLORD - Lots and lots of spraying!

Another late video. I truly must break this habit. Anyway, the new video with me showing off the shiny metal giant is now uploaded to the UToobs. I hope you enjoy me chatting about the painting process thus far : )

WARLORD - Part 11 - Looking at the new magnets and pins and so on.

I grabbed a few minutes over the busy weekend and put together this video on how the almost-complete Warlord Titan is looking now! There are a few more magnets in the head and on the arms. The arms and weapons are pinned into place, and I can now start priming the pieces : )

WARLORD - Part 10, Getting closer to the end!

It has been a little longer than I would have liked but I'm almost caught up with the Warlord. I put in a few hours of work on it yesterday and filmed a little bit this morning. Here's the video of where things are now at.

I hope you like it, and don't forget to check out my Patreon page!

WARLORD - Magnets, Drills, and Heads! AND Happy New Year!

After a little holiday break, I'm back at it. Only three months left until the Warlord needs to be in Chicago for AdeptiCon!

In this episode, I do a bit of drilling with my new 1" Forstner bit. I also drop in some heavy duty magnets, and show off my new acquisition, the Beta-pattern head that is currently only available from Warhammer World : )

Please check out my Patreon page by clicking on the link on the top right of this page.

You can check out the Warlord build on the Weemen blog HERE : )

Happy New Year to you all. I had a great 2015, I hope you did too. This just squeaks in to make the 95th post of the year. I painted almost as many models this year as last, but still more than 10 models per week. Not a bad average considering six of those were super-heavies!

I'm looking forward to seeing what 2016 brings!

WARLORD - The Superstructure

Well, I finally was able to film another video. It's a pretty quick one, not too much to look at. I complete the construction of the superstructure and start on the air intakes and exhausts.

Next time I'll get some more stuff glued onto the torso, and possibly attach some magnets : )

WARLORD - Titan Build Part 7 - The Big Guns!

With the legs essentially assembled (apart from the armor plates, of course) I decided to move onto the weapons for the Warlord. I currently have two Volcano Cannons and two carapace-mounted Laser Blasters, and I'm sure that as Forgeworld releases a wider array of weapons that I'll pick up a few of them too (although I'm not that fussed on the Apocalypse Launchers they also have for the carapace mounts).

Anyway, this video covers my thoughts/feelings on the weapons I have been assembling.

WARLORD - Wrapping up the legs!

It has taken a little while, but I finally have the next video ready to go! In this one I pin the knee and hip joints, glue down the hip rings, and add the hip pistons. There is also more (off-screen) blood spilled for the resin gods ; )

I hope you enjoy this latest installment. If you'd like to see them more often, please consider becoming a patron by visiting my Patreon campaign, HERE.

AdeptiCon Registration opens today!

So, I completely spaced on letting you all know about the classes I'm running at AdeptiCon 2016, but hopefully you'll see this before the cart goes live later today.

I'm running my Liber Metallica class (a revised version of last year's offering) twice on Thursday - 9:30-11:30am and 2:30-4:30pm - as well as Liber Titanicus (about painting Titans, Knights and Lords of War, including the reveal of my Warlord Titan!) at 5:00-7:00pm.

There are plenty of other great hobby classes too, taught by some of the best in the business. Make sure you get in early.

I'm not sure exactly when it all goes live, but check things out HERE for all the details.

See you at the show!

Cheers
Dave
