Making the wastes secure from what exactly?

The next miniature to make it's way out of the painting queue is this, a Fallout Securitron:

Well, officially it's a monobot from Black Cat Bases iirc, but we're among friends here so we'll just acknowledge what it is heavily influenced by!

While I was a big Fallout 3 fan, and was excited enough by New Vegas to preorder the expensive Collectors Edition, something about it just didn't click with me, and I barely played it. I think I imagined that I'd go back to it one day (as often tends to be the case - if something doesn't grab me the first or second try, chances are I'm going to fall pretty hard for it the third time!) but in this case that just never happened, and is unlikely to now as we're a whole console generation ahead... The Securitrons from New Vegas are a nice robot design though, so I was happy to add one to the Lead Mountain when I saw this!

His goofy face is heavily influenced by Yes Man, and was added with careful use of the micron pen that I usually use for dotting in pupils.

Mmm, weathering. Modelling anything Fallout related offers a lot of opportunities for a young man to enjoy himself with a sponge! Ignore the slightly waffy wheel though, that was a bit of dodgy casting...

I think when I get around to finalising rules for the Fallout project, he'll be an encounter card where he is a hostile enemy unless you can pass an Intelligence test to reprogram him, in which case he will join your character as a companion.

Danger Vault Dweller!

Whilst painting up my Vault Dweller recently, I also painted this 50's style robot from Black Cat Bases:

Having just gone on their site to put that link in, it looks like he might not be available any more. He's more Forbidden Planet than Fallout admittedly, but I think the style fits.

I bought this miniature innumerable years ago, so long ago in fact that I think Black Cat Bases actually disappeared off the radar for a while and have since come back...

It's a bit of a rough sculpt, but a metric ton of sponge weathering and judicious application of the GW Technical paint Typhus Corrosion in key spots make it look alright I think? The port in his back came with an optional key, which was a fun option but not for me...

Zomtober week 4 - spawn points a plenty

This week's submission (although by this I of course mean last week) is not one, not two, but three zombie spawn points:

Many, many moons ago, I was writing a set of zombie rules, featuring simple, convention suitable rules, and a deck of zombie cards to decide what type spawned. Alas, the laptop that had the half-finished rules on died, but I still have a bunch of ideas rattling around in my head (there were rules for things like survivors accruing noise tokens for doing things like shooting or using a chainsaw), so maybe one day I'll get around to redoing them... One thing from that is zombie spawn points, hence, I made these!

Originally, I'd made and undercoated one a couple of years back which I thought I'd dig out, but I fancied building another to go with it.

Having a dig through some boxes in the garage, I turned up a zombie bursting out of the ground from an old Frothers set, and a gravestone and spade from a Heresy ghoul pack that I apparently overlooked when I made my graveyard a couple of months back. Some torn up cork built up the base after a quick dry-fit, then it was time to crack out the glue.

Superglue just disappeared into the cork, so I busted out the white glue (although I did splash a bit of superglue around the edges to try and toughen it up somewhat).

Once the glue had dried, I dry-fitted the zombie into the hole I'd cut to make it look more like it was actually bursting out of the ground, but the thickness of the cork if used was a little more than I'd originally estimated, which made the figure look a little silly, so I grabbed a coffee stirrer to make an impromptu riser:

Perfect!

I then added the second piece of cork, and pinned the gravestone to the base for stability (as as previously mentioned, the cork pretty much drank superglue)

I then used some pre-mixed filler (that I'd originally picked up from pound land with the intention of making some generic rubble piles with) and smoothed out the steps so it wouldn't look like the grave was on a rocky crag:

My secret weapon in this (and also now in applying glue to bases, rather than using a cut down matchstick or ruining an old brush as I previously had been) was a pack of glue spreaders from the children's stationery aisle in Wilkinsons!

It was at this point that I thought 'hey, surely I could make and paint another spawn point just as easily as the ones I've already got on the go, right?'
I'd had ideas for a couple of different spawn points floating around my head for a while, and knew I had the bits for at least one of them somewhere, but all I needed was another 60mm round GW base... Next time we went into town, we nipped into the shop, only to discover that 60mm rounds are now a web shop exclusive, and don't come in the mixed packs that I'd previously seen in-store.

Plan kiboshed.

.

.

.

Until a day or so later, when I thought to myself 'wait, don't I have an Imperial Guard Heavy Weapon Teams boxed set still complete in box from that time several years ago that I impetuously decided that I was going to build a converted Blood Pact army and went on a spree in GW somewhere' and the answer it turned out was yes, yes I do. Plan back on!

This one was planned to be fairly simple, a zombie climbing out of a sewer. The figure is from Black Cat Bases, bought many, many years ago (before their current troubles, which hopefully seem to be getting better?). A quick application of a file to the tops of the ears to round them turned the ghoul into a perfectly passable zombie.

After cutting out the hole for the miniature to slot into, I originally planned to cut the cork to shape having marked the circumference of the top of the base on it. After cutting out a fraction of it though, I thought it might be better to stick it to the base, and then use that as a guide to trim it like you would the pastry lid of a pie!

Kevin Dallimore's painting guides: excellent reading, and excellent weights for squashing gluey bases while they dry:

Trimmed:

And with sewer miniature in situ:

At this point, my daughter decided that the spawn point in its current state of completion looked rather like the oaty rings that she likes to eat, and tried to do so. We agreed to disagree on this point.

And a little more pre-mixed filler to smooth the transition from cork to miniature:

It was at this point that I realised I was a little unhappy with the miniature - the sculpt around the figure was a little rough and ill-defined, so I had a crack at it with my trusty not-dremel to excise the unwanted material.

Pow, it looks more like he's actually in a hole now!

Admittedly, I actually dremelled right through the metal completely in one spot, but that's nothing that a spot more filler doesn't fix!

With my two bases ready to go, it was on to sanding (thank you trusty glue spreader again!) and the addition of the spade left over from a Heresy ghoul pack (the King I think? He's undercoated somewhere, I should really get round to painting him one of these days...)

I didn't cover the entire base of the sewer  spawn point, as I wanted it to look like Tarmac with some loose debris and rubble, rather than a random manhole in the middle of a gravel field.

You'll also notice in the picture above, I added a couple of extra details - a chunk of cork from one of my baggies of different grades and thicknesses of cork off cut for a larger chunk of rubble, and some metal details - a discarded set of burger and fries cartons, again from Black Cat Bases (expensive for what they are, really, but I quite enjoy them really!)

Then, for the first time in years (as I had a ton of things to undercoat at once), out to the garage with the first episode of the Dungeonpunx podcast to spray! (Ignore the Daily Mail, we bought it back in May for the free Lego and have kept it for spraying or if we were to need to start a fire). It's weird how my undercoating habits seem to move in cycles - spraying for maximum convenience on a number of figures, to getting annoyed at having to touch up the bits that have been missed, to gesso, to getting lazy and applying it too thickly and moving to brush-on primer, and so the wheel continues to spin...

Then I painted them, which I didn't take any step by step pictures of because who wants to see that!

This is the original spawn point I built a few years back - some Biohazard barrels from Fenris spilling their radioactive payload (because in the worlds of imagination, radioactive material gives you cool mutations rather than cancer), as is the case with this poor cat, who has lapped some up only to develop a cthulhuesque head and tiny wings! The cat was a freebie from Black Cat Bases, and the spilled goop is a base of GW Typhus Corrosion, followed by Nurgle's Rot, PVA glue to try and give it some structure, and then even more Nurgle's Rot!

This spawn point got a little moss and grass, and is done. Trivia - the zombie pulling himself got a Sotek Green tongue at my wife's suggestion, after I bought up the colours I'd need to paint Boba Fett's helmet according to a series of Youtube instructional videos should I ever get round to building my Knight Models miniature (but that probably won't be until I've painted the other two bounty hunters, and I am sadly still lacking a WOTC Zuckuss miniature...)

Last but not least, the zombie popping out of a sewer spawn point - dry brushing and washes a go-go! The discarded food items got a colour scheme to indicate that their previous owner might have been loving it, and that was that! I briefly considered adding a splash of gore to this figure, to try and hide the fact that it's face looked a bit ghoulish rather than zombie-like, but decided against it as I liked the way the teeth had come out too much!

Finishing these (yes, I'm counting them each as a finished figure!) brings the tally to:

33 vs 130 = -97

So, with just one week left of Zomtober (not that I've hit any deadlines so far, and everyone else seems to be stopping at week 4), I've got a couple of ideas for a finisher - If I can pull it off in time, I could have a biggie (although I also have a backup plan just in case!)

Back in black! Zombies, an ape and what purports to be a cat...

With my wife having gone out today, I found myself finishing a few miniatures to take the tally back into the positive!

First of all we have a pair of zombies, one from Heresy and one a repurposed Black Cat Bases mini:

Because hey, I haven't painted any zombies in a while and I'm working through the drawer(s) of undercoated minis to make space for new ones!

A Black Cat Bases Gorilla, to join the Orangutan from this post in the Rise of the Planet of the Apes project:

He was a little smaller than expected when he arrived (two or three years ago admittedly), but he can be a baby in my gang of revolutionary apes I suppose (playing little brother to the gorilla from the Bushido game that I'll probably pick up at some point in the future).

And finally, a cat, one of the freebies from Black Cat Bases:

Not a great pic, of an absolutely tiny mini. Looks a little like a bear, truth be told, but woo, tiny cat!

4 finished miniatures takes the tally to:

22 vs 19 = +3
(and yes, I did have to look through old posts to check if I used a '+', it's been that long since I was in the positives...)

There was another miniature that I was hoping to post finished pics of tonight, but I couldn't bring myself to start the detailing on his suit, so he stays like this on my painting tile for now:

Here's to hoping that Salute doesn't send me too far back into the red!

Arabian (k)niiiiiiiiiiights...

...like Arabian daaaaays.... More often than not, they're hotter than hot, in a lot of gooood waaaaaaays! Ah Aladdin... except imagine Aladdin joined a cult and decided to menace Conan:

Not only for Conan, they'll also make a nice Song of Blades & Heroes warband, or stand-in for Dungeons and Dragons. We have the Magister, flanked by a Hero and Champion looking pair:

(Crikey, photos are even worse than usual today, that's what I get for not finishing in time to use natural light). When I first pulled the central chap out of his ebay package, I thought about using him as some sort of town official, but it didn't take long before he'd been recast in my mind as some sort of evil magister. I mean, look how fancy his coat is!

Supporting them (and by supporting, I mean dying in droves under the onslaught of even the lowliest Hero type) we have a couple of henchmen:

I don't know why that guy even bothers with that shield, he's not even wearing a shirt!

Unsure of whether they're goodies or baddies, we have a pair of warrior princess types:

(pretend these photos are brighter)

When they're not part of a sinister cult, they can stand in for various character classes too.

Last but not least, we have the minis that shape the theme of the warband, dependant on their inclusion:

Zombies! With these, we have the entourage of an evil necromancer, without them, they're the bodyguards of an accountant...

Every miniature features a red sash or scarf, to tie them all together, but also to link them to the Snakeman I painted a while back, huzzah!

Actually finishing some miniatures brings the tally to:

27 vs 67 = -40 As soon as I can find a shade of pink I like for finishing off needlers, I'll have another dozen finished miniatures, but that still means I'll need another 28 to get back to zero - and Salute's in three weeks...

WOMP day five...

...the end of the inaugral WOMP week, also known as 'a biker, a priest, a singer and an ape walk into a bar...'

A biker from em4, this survivor has a substantially better chance of survival than the average - I mean, doing drive-bys on zombies with a samurai sword? Although admittedly there is an increased risk of incapacitating yourself and dooming yourself to getting eaten. In other news, Day of the Dead is on at the minute, which raises several points:
- Fast zombies? Seriously? Slow zombies are awesome, you can sneak past them, you can trick them into falling down holes, they're like a tide, a force of nature, but fast zombies that can crawl on the ceiling? That's not awesome, that's your life expectancy in that scenario whistling past your ear and down to zero. 28 Days later started some sort of 'my zombie's better than yours' war with any new zombie movie...
- Why is it that people in zombie films are so unprepared? Do zombie films not exist in-universe in zombie films? And if not, why are they calling them zombies? (I know, I know, suspension of disbelief, but still...)

Eolith's monk, bought from Heresy because it's just such a nice sculpt - look at it, so simple, but with so much character! It's one of those minis that's so nicely sculpted that it's an absolute pleasure to paint, and so you lavish more care and attention on it than you normally would.

Joining the cleric above in the on and off project of dnd classes is this bard, from Hasslfree, that I picked up at last year's Salute. Another lovely miniature, but I just couldn't get his face how I wanted...

The last of today's output is this hairy fellow, an Orangutan from Black Cat Bases for my possible Rise of the Planet of the Apes (ROTPOTA) project, because every squad of improved-intelligence apes needs a wise-looking Orangutan to act as spiritual advisor and strategist... I have a gorilla in the painting queue at the minute, but as I bought it sight unseen it's a little smaller than I'd like (and the Bushido gorilla has since caught my eye...)

with these four finished, the tally now stands at:

12 vs 27 = -15

Alas, the postman still didn't bring the goodies I was expecting this morning, which threw my plans off somewhat. There's a group of 15 fantasy minis waiting for some love in the painting queue, which would take me back up to zero, or I could paint the 10 minis for Strange Aeons, or crack on with finishing my zombie horde base... but what I really want is for the postman to bring the things I'm waiting for so I can get distracted by them. Truth be told though, in this wonderful high-tech modern era that we live in, I have the Song of Blades and Heroes rulebooks on my phone, so that should help with keeping my motivation pointed in that diretion...

WOMP day one...

So pow, an explosive start to the Week of Mega Power (it's a thing now)!

Well, almost, the Patriots vs 49ers game last night went into overtime, meaning we didn't get to bed until after 4am, which impacted negatively on the time we then got up this morning. When I did manage to get some coffee in myself, I set myself up for a day of painting:

(ignore the dancing statue of liberty, it has no relevance) - a nice assortment of bits and bobs, including some mystery miniatures from ebay that will hopefully be fighting Conan at some point in the future, although I've been thinking about picking up Song of Blades and Heroes to rock some warband scale skirmish at some point too. Dammit, that reminds me, I still need to get a Conan miniature...

Despite my high-falutin' intentions, I only actually managed to finish a single miniature today:

My second Black Cat Bases Rat Swarm (and yes, now I can use my chambered Star Wars acronym joke - it's a 'womp'-rat!), so that I can field a Rat King to it's fullest potential in games of Strange Aeons:

Finishing that doubles my productivity for the year thus far, and takes the tally to:

2 vs 27 = -25

Tomorrow, I will endeavour to finish more than a single miniature, and if some more sand turns up, I can crack on with some halo funtimes...

Final thought - sometimes, you're out drinking, and the pool table's not free, what do you do? Yes, you remember you've got Citadel Combat Cards stashed in your bag:

(and yes, I won)

The tally's first hit of the year...

So, yeah, my high hopes for this year being different to last year have already taken a drubbing... A new pot of TCR came last week. Oh, and all these miniatures:

In my defence, I had a discount code for Black Cat, hence this box of lovelies - there's a couple of packs of Obelisk bits in there (zombies to menace Conan and Baboons because they're great) as well as some of Black Cat's own apes that I fancy painting for some Planet of the Apes style shenanigans.

Also arriving today was this package from em4 (which arrived frighteningly quickly, as usual):

Mostly bases, as I'd nearly run out, but yes, there's a miniature hiding in there too (they're just so cheap, it's hard to resist!)

With this little lot, this year's tally of painted vs purchased currently sits at:

0 vs 15 = -15

And yes, I took advantage of Heresy's Christmas Sale to pick up some Spyglass/Eolith minis, so it's going to go even further into the negatives in the near future...

Honestly, I have been painting recently, I've just not finished anything to post up! My young lady and I have a week off in about a fortnight, so I'm thinking of doing some sort of Mega Power Week (or Week of Mega Power, the name's not confirmed yet) whereby we pledge to try and complete something hobby related every day and post about it, with some sort of reward at the end of the week if we succeed...

Speaking of my young lady, today she hit some charity shops, and amidst the old vinyl and wellington boots, she picked me up this:

Which is fairly handy, as I'm almost out of sand...
