VA - An Overdose of Heavy Psych

This is the last re-upload from the "A _ Dose of _ Psych" series which was originally posted here back in 2006. For those of you who missed it the first time around, I hope you enjoyed this amazing set of psychedelic rock compilations.

Here is the 3rd installment of the Arf Arf label's series of 60's garage-psych rock compilations. I found out the name of the remaining album, which I have yet to download. It's called A Heavy Dose of Lyte Psych. I'll begin the search for that one tomorrow, so hopefully I can complete the series.

What sets this apart from the many other similar '60s garage-psych releases is the extremeness of the music. Tracks collected here feature grungier guitars, slower or varied tempos and darker and more ominous atmosphere than earlier punk singles...and more fuzz and heavier feedback (even the occasional oscillator). These tracks were typically cut later than many of the other garage-band compilation series, and influences are second generation bands like Steppenwolf, Blue Cheer, Love, and the Stooges. While poppier sounds are eschewed on these sides, according to the liner notes these heavier slabs are the flip sides of lighter material. If the ballads on garage comps are the ones you skip over, by all means pick up a copy of this collection...you won't be disappointed. An extra bonus are six caveman-stomping cuts by the Boneheaded 31 Flavors, originally from two low-budget psych-sploitation albums on the Crown label.

Various Artists - Eat Me! Best of Cannibal Movie Soundtracks

I found a copy of Ruggero Deodato’s cult classic (???) Cannibal Holocaust at Streetlight Records twenty or more years ago. Although I am not a true horror or exploitation buff, preferring more the style of David Lynch & Alejandro Jodorowsky among others, I always really enjoyed/was repulsed by this film.

I found this compilation a few years back on knifefightingjesus website, but all of the files seem no longer available. If you’re interested in this sort of thing, you might want to grab it as there is no telling how long it will last. This collection of music features some great tunes from a variety of films in the cannibal films genre.

Cannibal Films is a sub genre of exploitation film made mostly by Italian filmmakers through the 1970s & 1980s. This sub genre is a collection of graphically gory movies  usually depicting cannibalism by primitive, Stone-age natives deep inside the Asian or South American rain forests. Although not all cannibal films show cannibalism on screen, all the movies are connected with the genre by stating that the tribe is cannibalistic & while cannibalism is the common denominator of these films, the general emphasis focuses more on various forms of shocking, realistic, & graphic violence, usually torture, rape, castration &/or animal cruelty. Similar to Mondo films, the main draw of cannibal films was the promise of gore, exotic locales, & cruel behavior. They eventually became a popular feature of Grindhouse culture. The peak of the genre’s popularity was from 1977 to 1981, a period that has come to be known as the cannibal boom.

Due to their graphic content, the films of this subgenre are often the center of controversy. Many of the films include genuine slayings of animals, making them a common target of censors around the world. The inclusion of graphic gore & sexual violence has also landed the films in censorship problems.

VA - Born Bad Volumes 1-6

In 1986 the first of a series of compilations entitled "Born Bad" introduced listeners to a number of bands that greatly influenced the rockabilly and psychobilly bands in the decades that followed. Perhaps the most important band to emerge was The Cramps, a band that I have featured here on DM many times in the past. The Cramps helped to usher in a new wave of rockabilly acts across the world, and inadvertently created a new genre in the process. They combined the sound and style of the early country, rockabilly and garage rock acts of the '50s and '60s with the newly emerging punk rock attitude and style of the late '70s. Their unique approach was labeled as "Psychobilly", and thus a genre was born.

The Born Bad series collects together the original music that inspired bands such as The Cramps. The six original volumes contain 84 tracks, with each volume in the series containing 14 tracks. The first volume is often listed as "Volume One: Songs The Cramps Taught Us", not to be confused with the bootleg release of the same name, which can be found here: http://digitalmeltd0wn.blogspot.com/2007/12/various-artists-songs-cramps-taught-us.html A sticker was included on the vinyl release of the first volume that read "Songs The Cramps Taught Us", although it would not be included on any of the volumes that followed. For those of you who are interested in listening to the early rockabilly, country, rock 'n' roll and garage rock acts of the '50s and '60s that inspired The Cramps, it gets no better than this compilation. Those of you who are familiar with The Cramps will recognize these songs, as the band sought to pay tribute to the artists that inspired them by performing their own cover versions to many of the songs contained in the Born Bad series.

The Born Bad series has proven to be one of the most popular posts on the blog. This is actually the third incarnation of the series that I have posted. Each time I have re-posted it I have attempted to improve the download being presented in terms of quality and features. Once again I have replaced the previous version with one consisting of MP3 files of a higher quality bitrate. Perhaps one day I'll get lucky enough to obtain a version of this in either FLAC or 320kbps MP3. I have exhausted all possibilities while searching for higher quality versions, but I have yet to find anything better than 192kbps. I have also included the liner notes for each individual volume, and managed to track down a number of images other than the front album covers.

Decades after the first volume was released someone decided to create two bootleg volumes to expand on the original six, and I will be posting those two volumes (Volumes 7 & 8) next. Due to the fact that they are bootleg releases, and not officially affiliated with the original six volumes, I decided to dedicate a separate post to those volumes. Ren & Stimpy Production Music Vol. 2

As promised, here is Ren & Stimpy Production Music Vol. 2. Ren & Stimpy Production Music Vol. 1 can be found here: http://digitalmeltd0wn.blogspot.com/2010/06/ren-stimpy-production-music-vol-1.html Apparently this was compiled and uploaded to a torrent site by an anonymous person. It was then uploaded by blogger Voncheech, then recompiled and posted by Kirk Demarais in it's final form on the Secret Fun Blog over two years ago. The links on that blog have been dead for some time now. Both volumes have popped up in various locations over the last two years, but never for long, and usually only one volume at a time. I intend to keep these links alive and well. This volume is much larger than the last, so I had to split it up into three separate volumes. There are 194 tracks, so as with the last volume I'm not going to include a track list. Kirk appears to be an expert on the subject, and I can't really expand upon his original post, so I will present it rather than my own amateur ramblings. Here is his original post:

Here it is folks, the long-awaited second volume of vintage incidental music that was excavated for the Ren and Stimpy show. Most of this stuff seems to come from the post John K. era with several notable exceptions that were sorely missing from the first batch (i.e. Shock Horror which blared as the news "Ren Hoek Takes Bubbly Sponge Bath" hit the streets), but even if you're as unfamiliar with the later episodes as I am, you're still bound to find something you enjoy among the one hundred and ninety-four selections (that's five full hours to you and me). Compared to the last set this collection is much more massive, but it's less focused stylistically; however, this amounts to a broader and wackier range of music.

Once again, the original curators of this amassment remain shrouded in the shadows of cyberspace, but we can thank blogger Voncheech for recently upping them. And just like last time, I contributed a cover (featuring another Bill Wray masterwork), looked up and ID tagged the artists, and made a track list. Again I tried to arrange it according to musical styles. It starts with plucky mid-century easy listening, and turns glamorous before going nutso eclectic ( You name it...rag time, folk, barroom piano, jazz, country, big band, banjo pickin', traditional German, Irish, French, and Eastern, and no shortage of polkas) followed by romantic, classical, drama and suspense, all punctuated with an assortment of short cues. You're practically guaranteed to like it if you like the same things I do... wax paper... boiled football leather... dog breath. We're not hitchhiking anymore... we're riding.

Ren & Stimpy Production Music Vol. 1

Update January 16th, 2013: As NØ aluded to in his previous post, I have finally returned from my adventures in darkest Africa. He and I will be working to re-upload many of the albums that were lost in the great file purges that took place on many of the major file hosting services after the seizure and closing of Megaupload. Almost every blog was affected by this, and unfortunately ours was no exception. Before these purges, Mediafire was easily my favorite file hosting service of choice. However, after reading about how they deleted countless files that were perfectly legal, such as music released under a creative commons license, or shared with permission from the artist, I have decided to look for greener pastures. This means I am going to have to experiment with different hosts until I can regularly deliver download links from a reliable host.

Please comment if any of you can recommend a good file host. I have been away for nearly a year, during which I had access to the computer/internet very little, and a lot can change during that time period on the internet. The primary thing I am looking for is a hosting service that provides longevity, in that they are unlikely to delete the file due to a DMCA complaint or a mistake, as far as the files are concerned. Of course, it would be great if this host met other standards, such as: acceptable file size limitations, no wait time for free users, fast download speeds etc. Again, please leave a comment if you can recommend such a host. I will be conducting an experiment of my own to find the best possible host in the meantime.

This will be the first of what will be many posts containing updated download links. I will begin re-upping Ren & Stimpy Production Music Vol. 2 as soon as I finish writing this. After that I plan on focusing on the posts which have the most re-upload requests. For those who may be new to this blog, I hope you enjoy what we have in store for you, and to those long-time visitors who might still be around, I hope that you discover something that you may have missed the first time around.

Today's music comes to you directly from the secret fun blog, an extension of the retro culture phenomenon Secret Fun Spot...created and maintained by Kirk Demarais, who also created I Rode Phantasmagoria, a site dedicated to my favorite childhood dark ride. Unfortunately, the download links to both Volumes 1 & 2 on the Secret Fun Spot blog are now dead. Demarais, author of 'Life of the Party', was most recently a contributing artist in Crazy 4 Cult, a show hosted by Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier, wherein over 100 artists reinterpreted classic cult films. "From the moment I experienced my very first brilliantly stupendous episode of the Ren & Stimpy show my brain has ruminated on how to get my hands on that wonderful vintage "incidental music" that sets the tone for their zany, wacky, madcap antics. Eventually the internet taught me that the music of Ren & Stimpy comes from all over the place. Some was written for the show, some are well known classical pieces, and there are quite a few works by Raymond Scott. For me, the most elusive stuff has always been the authentic "production music" from the 1950s.

A couple months ago I discovered that some dear soul (or souls) had assembled a massive collection of these aural delights, and made them available on a torrent site. It was as though the Gilded Yak had answered all of my letters at once! And you guessed it, I'm making this marvelous collection of classics available to you, the valued internet user.

Put simply, these melodies have enriched my life. Play them on your drive to work and you're the star of an instructional traffic safety film, turn it on during dinner and mealtime becomes 80% happier (but be careful.. play the wrong track and you could wind up with a touch of Space Madness). Best of all you can listen and imagine that you live in the world of Ren and Stimpy where the walrus-napping horse is your next door neighbor, where the toy stores are stocked with Log from Blammo, and a visit from Powdered Toast Man is just a complaint away!

Since this stuff is already available 'out there' I decided to add some extra value before I handed it off to you folks, and therefore I did the following..
-Designed an "album cover" for the collection (as seen above)

-Hunted down and tagged the name of every artist for every stinkin' track
-Added a couple tracks that I had that weren't included in the bundle
-Created a track listing based on musical styles. It kicks off with some general '50s domestic lollygagging tunes and then it gets more downtown hustle and bustle-ish. After that it goes spooky, glamorous, romantic, and finally dramatic.

VA - Give Peas A Chance: 21 Obscure Hits and Jazzy Gems (2003 - 192kbps)

I want to thank Zer0_II for bringing me on board to contribute to this blog regularly. It has been a great pleasure thus far and I am ecstatic about all the good and interesting music we'll be posting in 2011.

My first post for the new year is a great compliment to Zer0_II's previous post of Pulse of Events. This is a compilation culling 21 tracks from various library music labels, released on vinyl and CD by the German label Crippled Dick Hot Wax. It is an hour long groovy excursion into sixties and seventies cinema full of tracks that range from the energetic blaxploitation/cop show-esque, brass-heavy rock of John Cameron's "Crime Squad" to the laid back, loungey, & funky awesomeness that is "Name of the Game" by Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett. The album is amazingly cohesive, with a flow that I find very impressive. If you need some tunes to make you feel like one cool MoFo, get this.

Some of you may remember that I closed out November with several dark library music selections. During the next couple of weeks I plan to return to sharing library music, but rather than strictly focusing on a specific mood or theme, I would like to share a diverse selection this time around. First up is a compilation entitled "Pulse of Events", released by the severely underrated Themes International library as TIM 1023 in 1976. I have a couple of reasons for posting this compilation. The first and most obvious reason is that this compilation is one of the most solid and beat-heavy library music albums that I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. The rather dull cover is certainly deceiving, as the vinyl it houses contains some real scorchers. The second reason I wanted to share this is so that I can direct your attention to a blogger that is relatively new to the scene, and off to a tremendous start. I remember when I first started blogging I was given a big push by a blogger who had been around for years. RYP from the legendary Twilightzone! blog introduced a great deal of people to my blog, who most likely never would have paid it a visit otherwise. Hopefully now that I've been blogging for nearly five years, I can give a similar push to others who are somewhat new to the music blogging scene. Pulse of Events was originally ripped by "Marsellus Wallace" and shared on his extraordinary blog Marcellus Wallace's Crate Favorites. Mr. Wallace recently shared several Themes International rips over on his blog to kick off the new year. Be sure to dig through the archives while you're there for more library music goodness.

The compilation opens up with three outstanding tracks by Alan Hawkshaw, each of which are suspenseful jazz-rock numbers, often heavy on the bass and brass, and with what sounds to be some amazing synth/keyboard and piano work as well. Hawkshaw is followed by Mike Moran, who delivers two solid funk-rock tracks. "Task Force" opens up with a hip-hop beat shortly before the brass, percussion and funky guitar work take over. "Situation Unstable" begins where the previous track left off, yet takes the track in a more rock oriented direction toward the latter half without losing its funky edge. Next up is David Lindup and "CCX", a laid-back and light rocking groover, which leans toward the funky side at times also, featuring some nice fuzzy guitar work, piano, and powerful bursts of brass. While "Inside Information" contains one of the hard and heaviest riffs on the whole compilation, it is very fun and soulful track at the core, featuring plenty of hammond organ and some light guitar thrown in for good measure. The next four tracks come courtesy of Alan Parker, perhaps best known for his work on "Afro Rock" on the legendary KPM label (KPM 1130). While each of these tracks is solid in their own right, they are outshadowed by the monstrous "Hard Line", a real hard rocking scorcher with some seriously fuzzy guitar licks that are nothing short of Bad Ass. Closing out the album are a couple of tracks by Les Hurdle and Alan Tew respectively. Hurdle's "Offbeat" is another laid-back funky groover with the emphasis on the beat. Alan Tew closes out the album with "The Come On", a solid track that is a bit dynamic in nature. It has a bit of a crime jazz feel to it at the onset, but continuously evolves throughout. Driving strings, a deliciously funky bassline and weird spaced out sounds can be heard throughout. My favorite part of the track is the introduction of the piano near the end of the track, which closes it out with a bit of ragtime flavor.

As far as library music goes, this compilation is very accessible and would serve as a great introduction for the uninitiated. I really can't recommend this compilation enough. As I mentioned before, Themes International is a criminally underrated label. Labels such as KPM often get the majority of attention from collectors, while labels such as Themes International manage to fly under the radar despite releasing a number of amazing releases. A couple of the performers are even well known for being KPM regulars. If you happen to stumble across any releases by Themes International on other blogs in the future, go ahead and do yourself a favor and download them. Chances are you will be glad that you did. If you enjoy this gem, then I'm sure you will enjoy the various other Themes International library LPs that Marcellus Wallace has made available on his blog also.

Richard Band's Lovecraft: Limited Edition Soundtrack Compilation (2007 - 320kbps)

In 2007, Richard Band was given the Howie Award for lifetime achievement in music composition at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, Oregon. He brought with him a compilation of his compositions for Lovecraft inspired films, limited to 60 copies. I had the good fortune of befriending someone who attended that festival and scored a copy. At first, I wasn't going to post this because of the repetition here, since most of these pieces appear on albums that have been posted on this blog in the recent past. I changed my mind for a few reasons. First of all, it is a great compilation despite the fact that it is missing cues from From Beyond which is arguably Band's best horror score. Secondly, it features the music from the "Dreams in the Witch House" episode of Masters of Horror, directed by Stuart Gordon in 2005. To my knowledge this music isn't available anywhere else. This was a return to horror and Lovecraft for Band, after a seven year break during which he worked mostly on TV and family oriented stuff. The results are excellent with Band utilizing a small group of chanters, to classic bone-chilling effect. Finally, there are two excellent tracks from Bride of Re-Animator. Enjoy!

Main Titles From Unreleased Horror Scores Vol. V (2008)

This will be the last volume in the "Main Titles From Unreleased Horror Scores" compilation series that I post for the time being. Since the download link has been inactive for a long period of time, I may post Vol. VI before the end of the Nightmare Before Christmas event, if it is requested. I gave a brief description of the compilations in my original post, so in order to save myself some time, I am simply going to copy & paste it to each subsequent post dedicated to the series. Back in March of 2008 the Unreleased Horror Scores blog posted several volumes of "Main Titles From Unreleased Horror Scores" compilations. Unfortunately the download links posted on his blog have been dead for some time now. I will be posting the first five volumes from this collection tonight and tomorrow. While the title of the compilation states that these are from unreleased horror scores, several of these scores actually have been released. These are actually audio rips from VHS tapes of each of the films. While I'm sure this brings up dreadful visions of horrible sound quality, the quality isn't as bad as you would imagine. These actually sound fairly decent considering they are VHS audio rips, aside from a couple of tracks which have some distortion and background noise. The low quality recordings actually compliment the creepy atmosphere created by the music in some cases, as with Carl Zittrer's organ themes for Deranged.

As I mentioned before, the download links on the Unreleased Horror Scores blog have been dead for some time now. Fortunately the Egg City Radio blog re-uploaded the first five volumes and added tags to the tracks. I went a step further and retagged it once again. I added the proper artists to each track, corrected the titles and made a few other slight alterations. These compilations have generated a fair amount of interest, and I'm glad that I am able to help keep them alive for those interested.

Each of these compilations features a remarkable array of music from various horror films, the majority of which are main and end titles from the films. While the majority of the music contained within these collections is fantastic, there are also a few selections that leave much to be desired. There is a wide range of films from all over the world represented in each compilation, from popular horror films familiar to all, to those that have been long forgotten by all but a few. These compilations are essential listening for any horror fan.

Born Bad Volumes 7 & 8

This is a continuation of my previous post in which I posted Born Bad Volumes 1 through 6, which can be found posted here: http://digitalmeltd0wn.blogspot.com/2007/04/born-bad-compilation-series-collects.html I'm on break from school, and I have to go to work as soon as I get out, so I'm going to keep this post short. Many years after the original Born Bad compilation series was released, an individual released a couple of bootlegs, Born Bad Volumes 7 & 8. For the most part the music contained within these volumes is in the same vein as the rest of the series. One noticeable difference is the absence of songs which would eventually be covered by The Cramps, which were heavily featured throughout the first six volumes. Another minor difference is that both volumes contain 16 tracks, while the original six volumes contained 14 tracks each. Aside from these differences these bootleg volumes integrate well with the first six volumes, and one can listen to them all seamlessly. Below you will find an excerpt from my previous post, which covers some of the general info about the first six volumes:

In 1986 the first of a series of compilations entitled "Born Bad" introduced listeners to a number of bands that greatly influenced the rockabilly and psychobilly bands in the decades that followed. Perhaps the most important band to emerge was The Cramps, a band that I have featured here on DM many times in the past. The Cramps helped to usher in a new wave of rockabilly acts across the world, and inadvertently created a new genre in the process. They combined the sound and style of the early country, rockabilly and garage rock acts of the '50s and '60s with the newly emerging punk rock attitude and style of the late '70s. Their unique approach was labeled as "Psychobilly", and thus a genre was born.

The Born Bad series collects together the original music that inspired bands such as The Cramps. The six original volumes contain 84 tracks, with each volume in the series containing 14 tracks. The first volume is often listed as "Volume One: Songs The Cramps Taught Us", not to be confused with the bootleg release of the same name, which can be found here: http://digitalmeltd0wn.blogspot.com/2007/12/various-artists-songs-cramps-taught-us.html A sticker was included on the vinyl release of the first volume that read "Songs The Cramps Taught Us", although it would not be included on any of the volumes that followed. For those of you who are interested in listening to the early rockabilly, country, rock 'n' roll and garage rock acts of the '50s and '60s that inspired The Cramps, it gets no better than this compilation. Those of you who are familiar with The Cramps will recognize these songs, as the band sought to pay tribute to the artists that inspired them by performing their own cover versions to many of the songs contained in the Born Bad series.

Continuing where I left off with my last post, I present to you the second volume in the Main Titles From Unreleased Horror Scores collection. This is the second volume of five that I will be posting here. I gave a brief description of the collection in my original post, so in order to save myself some time, I am simply going to copy & paste it to each subsequent post. Back in March of 2008 the Unreleased Horror Scores blog posted several volumes of "Main Titles From Unreleased Horror Scores" compilations. Unfortunately the download links posted on his blog have been dead for some time now. I will be posting the first five volumes from this collection tonight and tomorrow. While the title of the compilation states that these are from unreleased horror scores, several of these scores actually have been released. These are actually audio rips from VHS tapes of each of the films. While I'm sure this brings up dreadful visions of horrible sound quality, the quality isn't as bad as you would imagine. These actually sound fairly decent considering they are VHS audio rips, aside from a couple of tracks which have some distortion and background noise. The low quality recordings actually compliment the creepy atmosphere created by the music in some cases, as with Carl Zittrer's organ themes for Deranged.

As I mentioned before, the download links on the Unreleased Horror Scores blog have been dead for some time now. Fortunately the Egg City Radio blog re-uploaded the first five volumes and added tags to the tracks. I went a step further and retagged it once again. I added the proper artists to each track, corrected the titles and made a few other slight alterations. These compilations have generated a fair amount of interest, and I'm glad that I am able to help keep them alive for those interested.

Each of these compilations features a remarkable array of music from various horror films, the majority of which are main and end titles from the films. While the majority of the music contained within these collections is fantastic, there are also a few selections that leave much to be desired. There is a wide range of films from all over the world represented in each compilation, from popular horror films familiar to all, to those that have been long forgotten by all but a few. These compilations are essential listening for any horror fan.

James Bernard & Tristram Carry - The Hammer Quatermass Film Music Collection (1999 - FLAC & 320kbps)

Several of you have requested soundtracks to films released by Hammer Film Productions, and I'm pleased to be able to present an excellent collection of music from three of the four Quatermass films released by Hammer during the '50s and '60s. The Quatermass films were part of a science-fiction horror series that revolved around the aftermath of a lethal extraterrestrial fungus brought back to Earth by the sole survivor of an outer space expedition. These films helped to put Hammer on the map, and many consider them to be among the best films that Hammer ever produced. The Hammer Quatermass Film Music Collection contains both Tristram Cary's original electronic scores, as well as James Bernard's orchestral scores composed for the following Hammer films: The Quatermass Experiment (1956) Quatermass II (1957) and Quatermass and the Pit (1967)

The music from the films is introduced in reverse chronological order, with Tristram Cary's electronic score for "Quatermass & The Pit" up first. The music from this film makes up the bulk of the collection, while only a few minutes of music from "Quatermass II" and "The Quatermass Experiment" are presented. This is my only complaint regarding the collection, as the quality of the music more than makes up for the lack of equal representation. James Bernard's orchestral score to "Quatermass II" is the second to appear, with three tracks which clock in at just over two minutes in total length. It is followed by another score from James Bernard for the film "Quatermass II". Again, most of the cues are very short, and the seven tracks total slightly less than three minutes in length. "Quatermass & The Pit" appears once again, with various electronic music sessions
from Tristram Carry finishing off the collection. All of the tracks featured in the collection have been digitally restored from their original recordings and sound fantastic.

I had intended to wait until I had both the FLAC and 320kbps mp3 versions uploaded before I created this post. I uploaded the FLAC version last night, and the plan was to start the 320kbps upload before I left for school. As luck would have it, my computer froze up, so I had to just leave without starting the upload. I will upload the 320kbps version as soon as I get home from school this afternoon, and post the download link as soon as it finishes uploading.

Various Artists - Warp Back To Earth

This compilation pays homage to the music of Peter Thomas, a German composer who was featured in my last "Sci-Fi September" post.

In the late nineties it seems that many musicians started to pay attention to Peter Thomas' work. Someone had the idea to make a remix album honoring his past work. Thomas dug up some samples and sent them out to a variety of artists to see what they would come up with. The album itself features two discs. The first disc features the remixes that were contributed by the chosen artists. The second disc is rather cool as it pulls back the curtain for the listener and lets us hear the original source material.

The music found on the album shows off the versatility of the source materials. One moment you are floating through Sterolab's "Blaue Milch" and pretty soon you are faced with the fuzz-filled Momus track "Dub in My Club" with a variety of twists and turns found throughout. An excellent and worthwhile compilation if you are willing to put in the time to listen.

Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra - Futuremuzik (1998)

Peter Thomas is best known for his work as a soundtrack composer. While he has done numerous scores, his most lauded work is probably the soundtrack he created for a German sci-fi television series Raumpatrouille Orion [Space Patrol Orion].

Thomas often recorded with what was dubbed the Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra. The "orchestra" itself was a revolving door sort of group which featured various jazz and session musicians from around Germany. While his compositional style was sometimes unconventional, he was anything but controlling, as illustrated in this anecdote told by Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra member Ingfried Hoffman:

"...he came with a beer coaster into the studio on which he had written a few basic ideas. The rest was up to us. Only later did we realize the large degree of freedom he gave us made his music possible."

Thomas was also a technical innovator which gave his music a certain sound not found elsewhere at the time. In addition to things like his lauded use of the vocoder at the beginning of the Raumpatrouille Orion theme, he also worked alongside his sound engineer Herr Wicha in order to create a synthesizer they dubbed the "Tho-Wi-Phon." This revolutionary 12-oscillator synthesizer was so innovative that, as legend has it, the CIA actually became interested in the frequency range of the instrument and adapted elements of its design for use in sub-sonic weaponry. The synthesizer itself can be viewed on display in the Deutsches Museum in Munich.

Futuremuzik, features the music of the Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra. I wanted to post the complete soundtrack to Raumpatrouille Orion, but that album is digitally distributed by a number of services. The good news is that this compilation does feature the legendary Raumpatrouille theme (listed as "Space Patrol"). Not only that, but you also get to sample "Gods from Strange Planets" which comes from Thomas' score for Chariots of The Gods?, a documentary based on Erich von Däniken's book of the same name. This compilation is a nice entry point for those unfamiliar with his work and remains one of my own most played albums.
