elcome to the Digital Meltd0wn Music Blog. The aim of this blog is to introduce the readers to music that is out of print, commercially unavailable, released under a creative commons license, or with approval by the featured artist. The majority of the music posted here would be considered underground. Don't let that fool you into thinking that the music featured here might be any less enjoyable than that of the mainstream artists you hear on the radio, as this couldn't be further from the truth. Please keep in mind that the majority of the artists that appear on this blog, along with their respective record labels, are not wealthy and need your support. If you enjoy the material that you find here, please support the artists/labels by purchasing their material afterwards. If you are an artist/label that would prefer to have your material removed from this blog, simply leave me a comment, and I would be more than happy to promptly remove the offending post. In addition to running this blog, I also work on a few other projects during my spare time. The Chocolate Watch Band - No Way Out

Edit: This was actually one of the very first albums I uploaded for Digital Meltd0wn almost 4 years ago. I'm in the process of uploading several albums which no longer have working download links. If you happen across any albums that you would like to see reuploaded, now would be a good time to report the dead links. You can find the link to "report a dead link" in the main menu. For those who haven't heard it, I hope you all enjoy this little gem from the DM vaults.

The Chocolate Watchband's debut album, No Way Out was also their most heavily Rolling Stones-influenced album, but appreciating the album and what's on it (and what's not) requires some explanation -- especially as an original vinyl copy could set you back $100 or more. Released in September of 1967, No Way Out came at the end of the band's first 15 months of existence, a period that encompassed the recording and release of four singles of generally extraordinary quality, and as good as anything heard from any garage band anywhere during that period. Just two of those single tracks, "Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love-In)" and "No Way Out," ended up on the original ten-track LP, but even they could (and should) have been the core of an immensely powerful LP. Instead, out of the remaining songs, only two -- the group's nicely cranked-up version of Chuck Berry's "Come On" (obviously influenced by the Rolling Stones' debut single, which was, itself, a good trick, since the latter had never seen a U.S. release in any form) and the psychedelic Bo Diddley-based "Gone and Passes By" -- were recorded by the entire group and released in the form intended. The other six tracks included Watchband recordings, such as "Let's Talk About Girls," "In the Midnight Hour," and "Hot Dusty Road," on which lead singer David Aguilar's vocals had been replaced by those of session singer Don Bennett (co-author of the band's single "Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love-In)") and also embellished with extra instrumental overdubs; two instrumentals, "Expo 2000" and "Dark Side of the Mushroom," recorded by a group of studio musicians put together by engineer Richie Podolor; and, finally, the bizarre "Gossamer Wings," a psychedelic digression by Bennett and company that used the band's basic track from the 1966 single B-side "Loose Lip Sync Ship" as its jumping-off point. So what's here is not really representative of the Chocolate Watchband that was seen in the movie Riot on Sunset Strip, or heard on those four killer singles in 1966 and early 1967. All of that said, No Way Out is still an extremely impressive and enduring album that nicely straddles the garage punk and psychedelic genres; the Watchband's "Come On" still gets this reviewer's pulse bouncing to Chuck Berry's beat, and it and the other three finished band cuts are still highly potent, slashing, exciting, clever pieces of music. "Gone and Passes By" and "No Way Out" are sharp works of psychedelic punk music, the former mixing sitar music with a shimmering Bo Diddley beat to superbly seductive effect, while the latter is built on a twisting, jagged blues- and raga-based lead guitar line that recalls the late-1966 vintage Jefferson Airplane's work. And "Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love-In)" is a stirring, even threatening anthem to youthful defiance. The record is still an essential '60s album in any collection.

The 60's Choice Collection of Scarcest Garage Records

I downloaded this gem of an album on DC++; however, since obtaining it, information regarding this album has proven to very scarce. What I do know is that it was released in 1992 by EVA Records, and it contains a great selection of tracks which were recorded between 1965 to (967 by various underground garage acts. I was very impressed upon hearing this compilation for the first time. It's a solid collection of songs, and I don't think there's a bad track on the album. I highly recommend this for anyone who is into 60's garage or psychedelic rock. Unfortunately the person I was downloading this from went offline before I was able to get the last track. I'll keep checking back..hopefully I'll be able to catch that person online again, download the last track, and add it here.

Sixties Archives - Volumes 1-8

I posted this back in 2007 but a few of the download links have died since then. I also noticed that I neglected to write any type of description, so I can only assume that I posted this during a very busy time in my life. Apparently times haven't changed much since then, as I still have precious little time on my hands, but I'll offer up this short review for those of you who haven't had a chance to listen to this collection:

The Sixties Archives collection compiles a broad selection of proto-punk, garage rock, and psychedelic tracks from the 60's, with the majority of the bands featured being obscure. The collection is spread out over eight discs, each of which focuses on a particular regional scene in the United States. Those of you who are aficionados of underground 60's rock might recognize a few of the bands scattered throughout; however, there are several bands which are unique to this collection, as well as previously unreleased tracks from some of the more well known artists. This is comparable to the legendary Nuggets series which I'm sure most of you are familiar with, and although the overall quality doesn't equal that of Nuggets, it outshines the overwhelming majority of the 60's rock compilations that I've listened to thus far.

Ofo The Black Company - Allah Wakbarr/Beautiful Daddy 7" Single

By Request, this post was reuploaded 01/17/2015. NØ

I had every intention to move on from the African music, and then I happened across this amazing 7", which I couldn't resist sharing. It was originally released in 1972 on the Decca records label. Both tracks are great, but the A-side track "Allah Wakbarr" is absolutely stunning, and the obvious star here. The track begins with some pure funk riffage, backed by a low groovy African beat, with chants thrown in for good measure. Just as you are feeling the whole African vibe, the track erupts into raw psychedelic funk. It slowly builds with the beat becoming heavier and heavier, all the while accompanied by a nasty squealing guitar solo.

The B-side "Beautiful Daddy" is great, but doesn't match the sheer ferocity of "Allah Wakbarr". The first half of the track is straight forward afrobeat, but that raw electric guitar emerges in the latter half, climaxing in a dirty psyched out solo. The A-side track has been featured on several compilations, including "Nigeria 70: The Definitive Story of 1970's Funky Lagos". The liner notes for this compilation includes a bio of the group, for which information is very scarce:

Discovered by Decca's A&R man in Nigeria, David Bennett, they were one of countless student band's playing in Lagos during the 70's. This "crunching rock jam" recorded in 1972 was their earliest hit and became their best known track. Due to it's release in the UK they were invited to play in Berlin before travelling on to the UK. They were based there before undergoing a name change to Ofo The Rock Company and returning to Lagos in 1975.

Members:
Guitar: Toks Shotade
Drums/Percussion/Vocals; Larry (Lari?) Ifedioranma
Keyboards: Dele Olaseinde (ex "Clusters" & "Ofege")
Congas: Kingsley Obiche

I read on another website that the band released a live LP recorded from their European tour. I would love to get my hands on a copy of this if any of you could help out. I would also love to hear more music with a similar sound, so if any of you have recommendations, please leave a comment. This comes highly recommended. At 10MB, the file size is very small, so do yourself a favor and download this now.

They have influenced a countless number of successful bands, All six members would go on to join other successful bands, including The Hitmen, The New Christs, The Visitors, and New Race. The group briefly reunited in 1996 for a small number of tours, and even released a new album, 'Zeno Beach', in 2006. The reunited Birdman called it quits once again in May of 2008, as lead-singer Rob Younger returned to work with the latest incarnation of The New Christs.

All Music Guide Review:
"The problem with tribute albums is that they usually only hint at the original artists' skill and majesty (if you could call it that) without coming close to the quality of the originals. One is usually left with a mixed bag of decent and not-so-decent tunes, some of which cannot stand alone without the memory of the original. Some songs are hampered since the originals are perfect as is, suggesting the futility of tribute albums. Really, how is one going to improve on tracks by an artist deemed great enough to warrant a tribute album? Flattery tries a different track, acting as both a compilation as well as a tribute album. Hearing different versions of one's favorite Radio Birdman tunes is the hook that gets one curious enough to take a listen, and is perhaps rewarded in finding out about a new band worth investigating. Often, one winds up deeming the quality of the songs by whether one agrees with the new version of it. The tracks on Flattery are hit-and-miss, with the high spots being the submitted tracks by the Hellacopters, the Dead City Rebels, and Hellenic Zeal. Hellenic Zeal is the only band to include a vaguely farfisa sounding organ to accompany their crunchy version of "455 SD"; only two other bands offer weak piano sounds. The low points include the Quadrajets hyperspeed "Man With the Golden Helmet" and the vocals of Larry May of the Candy Snatchers on "Murder City Nights." The Boyettes track stands out as being the only female band, while the rest of the tracks fall into the category as reviving pleasant memories, but not really adding to them. If you have the original Birdman albums, then this is worth a spin. Otherwise, proceed with all speed to find a vinyl copy of either Radios Appear or the Burn My Eye EP." ~ Jeremy Salmon, All Music Guide

Do the Pop! The Australian Garage-Rock Sound 1976-1987

I can't help but notice how many blogs have joined in the countdown to Halloween, many committing to a post a day until.
While I don't personally have the time required to commit to such a posting schedule, I will attempt to share a few Halloween related treats this month.

Mary Shelley Overdrive, one of my recent fave indie bands, has this week released their Bride Of Shock Theatre EP as a free download. Hooray!
"it’s a collection original compositions peppered with covers of tunes by Blue Oyster Cult, New Math and Bauhaus. It’s got a rushed, impromptu sound that I like", said singer Mark Wood. "It sounds very ‘live.’ We didn’t do many takes or spend much time obsessing over details."
Folks, this album rocks. Plain and simple. I highly suggest you give it a listen, and head over to their Website and download the rest of their stuff.

VA - The Psychedelic Experience: Volume 2

This was re-upped as requested by Rob. Use the search box in the top left hand corner of the page if you're looking for the other volumes.

This is the second of four volumes in The Psychedelic Experience series. This compilation consists of ultra rare 60's psychedelic and garage punk. Many of this songs are only available on this collection, and were pulled from various 45s released around the United States during the 60's garage band explosion. An extremely limited number of these vinyl records were pressed, and even fewer managed to survive. Although most of the bands on this compilation would go on to vanish into obscurity, these tracks still sound impressive after all these years. The Psychedelic Experience doesn't disappoint with it's assortment of straight forward monster garage fuzz rock and roll.

Track List:
1. Decades - On Sunset
2. Higher Elevation - Odyssey
3. Monocles - Psychedelic
4. Waters - Mother Samwel

VA - Flaming Burnout: An Estrus Benefit Compilation

This compilation was originally released in 1997 as a benefit compilation for Estrus Records. For those not familiar, Estrus Records is an independent record label from Bellingham, Washington that makes surf, garage and trash rock music. They have released such bands as Soledad Brothers, The Drags, The Mummies, Impala, Man or Astro-man?, the Makers, Gas Huffer, The Mooney Suzuki, The Cherry Valence, Midnight Evils, Mono Men, Federation X, The Trashwomen, Satan's Pilgrims, and Southern Culture on the Skids.

In January of 1997 a fire broke out in the Estrus Records warehouse. Unfortunately this fire destroyed their entire mail-order inventory and private record collection. In response to this tragic event, 30 bands from around the globe got together and donated a song to the Flaming Burnout compilation to help out for the cause. There is a good mixture of styles to be found on this compilation, including surf (Satan's Pilgrims, Man or Astro Man?), punk (the Criminals, Mono Men, the Makers), and bands with a style all their own (Serverton, Madame X, Southern Culture on the Skids).

Back To Peru: The Most Complete Collection Of Peruvian Underground 64-74

Collectors of 60's music, having grown weary of dredging the annals of European and American garage, psyche, pop, rock etc. have in recent years turned their attention elsewhere. It hasn’t been the first time but lately there seems to be a profound interest in music from the sixties that originated in more distant lands. The Far East for example and in the case of this compilation Latin America, more specifically the country of Peru.

If you think about the geography of Peru with it’s coastal plains, the rugged Andean mountains, and tropical rainforests, a very diverse picture begins to emerge. Now hold that thought, apply it to the music found on this disc and that should give you a good idea of the range of styles showcased on this compilation. Everything from surf, Mersey Beat, cheesy organ driven garage, Andean psych folk and at least three songs by obsessive Hendrix devotees.

To clarify, the official title gives the years (64-74) which is a little odd considering the earliest tracks are from 1966. Still, eight years is a lot of ground to cover and by what I can gather from the somewhat obfuscating and poorly translated liner notes, the social and cultural milieu of those times proved to be an extremely fertile period for Peruvian music in all it’s various forms. Indeed the liner notes describe the capitol of Lima as a place where, “for every four blocks of the city there was at least one band, and out of every twenty bands, five of them were really good. My calculator tells me that’s five good bands every 80 blocks which is not that bad considering the size of a city like Limo. The lack of a real music industry and access to proper recording equipment though is one of the main reasons that much of this music was lost or never put down in the first place. Nonetheless the folks at vampi soul have compiled a great time capsule of what has survived.

Some of the most fascinating stuff on here are the songs that skip the impersonations and instead blend the popular outside influences with traditional rhythms and instruments. El Polen create beautiful spacious music with acoustic guitars, Andean flutes, electric bass and violin. If you’ve ever heard Simon and Garfunkel’s El Condor Pasa, it’s like that but way better and authentic. Radical political changes would take place in 1968 when a military coup would attempt to unite the country, implementing far-reaching economic and social reforms. Radio stations were obliged to play regional music in place of foreign or alien sounds, this included local ethnic versions of modern hits. The changes that were taking place had a major impact on the rock scene and slowly it’s growth was slowed to a halt. The music found on this album represents a golden period for rock and experimentation that existed in Peru for a precious length of time. It is a aural document and a great listen

Randy Holden - Early Works '64-'67

UPDATE: This post was re-uploaded 11/17/2013.

I ran across this little gem over at the Garage Music blog, and I thought that I would cross post it here for Aaron since he requested Population II. The Garage Music blog is operated by a real nice guy by the name of Pablo, who does a great job over there. If you enjoy this be sure to stop by his blog and thank him for making this available.

"A nifty compilation of most of the rare mid-'60s singles that Holden played on before joining the Other Half. The two 1966 singles by Sons of Adam are solid psych-pop-punk, particularly the scorching "Saturday's Son." Those four tracks are joined by three previously unreleased Sons of Adam cuts that show an unexpected Zombies/Beau Brummels influence. The remaining six selections are by the Fender IV, including both of their Imperial singles and a
couple of previously unreleased items. It's solid surf music, highlighted by Holden's stellar w all-of-staccato reverb on "Mar Gaya" (also available on Rhino's Legends of Guitar: Surf, Vol. 1) and the propulsive (vocal) surf-Merseybeat hybrid "You Better Tell Me Now." If only it had the third and last Sons of Adam single, this would be a complete retrospective of Holden's pre-Other Half output; unfortunately, that third Sons of Adam single ("Feathered Fish"/"Baby Show the World") was the group's best, so its omission is significant. (It is available on a hard-to-find EP on Moxie that has all three Sons of Adam 45s.) Incidentally, unlike many such import compilations of impossibly obscure '60s music, this is personally authorized by the artist himself.

Amazing compilation of one of the best guitar players of the 60s...remeber that Randy was part of Fender IV (surf-rock), Sons of Adam and Other Half, before joining Blue Cheer. Not a good career ah??? This album contains a lot of great Surf-rawn-rock-music, great covers, yes, "Mr, you are a better..." its just amazing!. Some surf classics as "Highway surfer" and "Mar Gaya" among others. Highly Recommended." - Pablo

Kim Salmon and the Surrealists - Hit Me With The Surreal Feel

This album was requested by Browner a while back, and Nathan Nothin was actually the one who supplied this album.

Salmon formed the first lineup of the Surrealists in mid-1987, with Brian Hooper on bass and Tony Pola on drums. He formed the band to record the album Hit Me With The Surreal Feel, using minimalist lo-fi approaches to recording a basic trio: recording the band live with microphones around the studio capturing the entire sound, rather than one instrument per track. The recording and mixing cost was AUD$240 total. The band also played live around Perth in mid-1987. The Surrealists did a few songs by the Scientists (particularly "Shine" from The Human Jukebox) and had a similar sound, in that Salmon remained the leader and primary songwriter, but the feel of the music was notably different: far less tense and confrontative. In 1999, Salmon renamed the band Kim Salmon and the Business.

1910 Fruitgum Co. - Indian Giver

Thanks for all your comments guys and gals. It's been fun guest blogging here for the week. I'll leave you with one last little groovin' record. This one is from the legendary 1910 Fruitgum Company. This was one of the great bubblegum bands of the late 60's. As with everything else on Buddah Records, at the time, they played some infectiously catchy tunes and were even part of the Kasenetz-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus, as well. This is a fitting album to end my stint here on since I began with the Tater Totz album on which they did a cover of a song that is on here in its original form, "1, 2, 3 Red Light". Actually, I don't even know why they call this stuff "bubblegum" since some of it is pretty raw and could even pass for biker rock of the time. Anyway, I defy you to not have fun listening to this classic slab of. . . digitally compressed audio, ha! Get out your trip toys and go to the lake or beach or wherever you gotta go to get your groove on and burn this one for the road.

Thanks for having me Zer0 and thanks for listening to all of you!

Tater Totz - Mono Stereo

Mono Stereo is a groovy grab bag of pop culture references and rock and roll history as consumed and spat back onto record by some of the best from West Coast punk's rich sceneAnother great summertime album, the Tater Totz were a side project from McDonald brothers (Redd Kross) and friends. The line-up also included members of White Flag, Frightwig, Shonen Knife, and Pat Smear from The Germs, Foo Fighters, etc. The Tater Totz released three albums, two studio and one live, before fading away. "Mono Stereo" was, in my opinion, the best of the lot and includes some really strange and even beautiful tracks. Conceptually, I think the idea was to pay tribute to The Beatles, Queen, 60's punk, and especially Yoko Ono.
Among the odd covers and conglomerations on this album are a version of "Instant Karma" with Cherie Currie (The Runaways) on lead vocals, a nice little cover of "1, 2, 3 Red Light" by 1910 Fruitgum Company, a re-creation of the epic "Cambridge 1969" (the famous Lennon/Ono show), an incredible composition that mixes "Bohemian Rhapsody" with "Who Has Seen The Wind", and even a couple of Os Mutantes songs thrown in for good measure. In fact, the Os Mutantes songs are just taken straight from their records and are included as bonus tracks. Strange as that may be, I've heard that this represents the first time any of their stuff was released in America.
An all around toe-tappin' album, "Mono Stereo" is a groovy grab bag of pop culture references and rock and roll history as consumed and spat back onto record by some of the best from West Coast punk's rich scene. Enjoy!
