Welcome

elcome to the Digital Meltd0wn Music Blog. The aim of this blog is to introduce the readers to music that is out of print, commercially unavailable, released under a creative commons license, or with approval by the featured artist. The majority of the music posted here would be considered underground. Don't let that fool you into thinking that the music featured here might be any less enjoyable than that of the mainstream artists you hear on the radio, as this couldn't be further from the truth. Please keep in mind that the majority of the artists that appear on this blog, along with their respective record labels, are not wealthy and need your support. If you enjoy the material that you find here, please support the artists/labels by purchasing their material afterwards. If you are an artist/label that would prefer to have your material removed from this blog, simply leave me a comment, and I would be more than happy to promptly remove the offending post. In addition to running this blog, I also work on a few other projects during my spare time. You can find links to those, as well as a few other important links associated with Digital Meltd0wn in the menu bar above.

Premature Ejaculation- Assertive Discipline (Now 320Kbps)

Here is another Premature Ejaculation release by request and my personal favorite Premature Ejaculation release. Originally released on cassette from the label, "The Happiest Place on Earth" in 1988, "Assertive Discipline" is one of the most pleasurable trips to a dark, isolated hell one can take. Assertive Discipline opens with "Bottling Room Part I & II," dark ambient pieces spliced with screams, horrifying gasps for air, and coughing samples. It leaves one with the feeling of being in a claustrophobe's nightmare. The creepy factor does not let up as the album moves on into "Dolls Theater," a chilling track featuring baby wails and an eerily placed rendition of "Rockabye Baby." And the track, "The Worst Hell," lives up to its title. I hope you enjoy this shared Rozz side project as much as I do, because sharing is caring!

Distorted Pony - Instant Winner

Guitarist David U. and bass-player Dora Jahr first played as Distorted Pony in 1986. They later added drummer Theodore Jackson and noise-guitarist Robert Hammer. Steve Albini recorded their two albums of angst-metal, Punishment (1992) and Instant Winner (1994).

Instant Winner put a stamp on the recording career of the resoundingly original Distorted Pony, a groundbreaking band from California in the late '80s and early '90s. Surprisingly, this postmortem collection of songs is the most cohesive of the band's recording career. Highlights include the stirring focus of "Lamb Stink" and "Big Sprawling Corrupt," with a focus on Dora Jahr's wrenching vocals. The band's penchant for dissonance continued, and the feedback and blistering guitars, bass and drums add up to a brilliant and encapsulating wall of sound. Trance Syndicate Records unveiled the band's final creation in 1994.

虚装束 Karasyozoku - Mischievous Sigyn 1923 cassette (2008 - 320Kbps)

On September 1, 1923, the great Kantō earthquake (関 東 大 震 災) struck the Kantō plain on the Japanese main island of Honshū. First hand accounts reported the duration of the earthquake at between 4 & 10 minutes, believed to be 7.9 on the Richter scale. The power & intensity managed to move a 121 ton statue of Buddha almost two feet. An estimated 100,000 to 140,000 people lost their lives. In present day Japan, September 1 is Disaster Prevention Day. Schools, & both public & private organizations host disaster drills. Because of these practices, the Japanese people were more prepared than most populations for the current disaster.

Karasyozoku’s debut release, Mischievous Sigyn 1923 is based on this natural disaster as well as the political & social events that accompanied it. This is the second release from Lust Vessel in the new wave of Japanese noise. It is a mixture of terrifying heavy electronics, de-constructed organ, tortured female vocals mixed with various field recordings. It has elements of Musique Concrète & old school industrial. It could easily be the horrifying soundtrack of past or current events in Japan. Not for the squeamish.

Karasyozoku is made up of three members: Dr. Torikabuto; Kichi; & Annoying Labia. All tracks were recorded & mixed late 2007 at Sacred Lust Studio. It was released on cassette with a A5 sized 14 page booklet with photos & lyrics, limited to 150 copies, currently out of print.

Chu Ishikawa - Tetsuo: The Iron Man & Tetsuo: Body Hammer (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Saved this post for Samhain itself.

One of my favorite films, a 1989 cyberpunk vision of urban nightmare & bod-mod horror from avant-garde Japanese filmmaker extraordinaire Shinya Tsukamoto, filmed in 16mm. Tetsuo:The Iron Man is a nonstop barrage of nerve-shredding, mind-splitting surrealism that serves as a jarring analysis of the paranoia of industrialization. The constant manipulation of multiple cinematic techniques, including film-speed & stop motion, coupled with the film's fever-pitched assault on the senses, creates a consistently unsettling aura of impending doom.

Chu Ishikawa’s intense soundtrack is equally discordantly grating, filled with the searingly crackling & pounding sounds of scraping metal & rending tissue. It is the perfect match to the film, easily as assaulting on the ears as the film's visual scheme is on the eyes. This film & score are impossible to forget, leaving a lasting impression on those who subject themselves to its cognitive horrors, searing itself into not only your mind, but into your entire consciousness.

This CD also contains the soundtrack to Tetsuo II: Body Hammer.
Tracks 1, 4, 5 from "Tetsuo: The Iron Man", tracks 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 from "Tetsuo II: Body Hammer".

Coil - Unreleased Hellraiser Themes - Vinyl & CD Versions

I thought it would be appropriate to follow up the official Hellraiser score with this unoffical version by Coil. The Unreleased Themes for Hellraiser (subtitled The Consequences Of Raising Hell) was the fourth album that Coil released in the year 1987. The album was released on the CD, cassette and 10" vinyl. It was the proposed soundtrack to the film Hellraiser. A common misconception is that this version was deamed "too scary" to use, however in all actuality it was turned down because it was not considered commercial enough by the studio. The following quote by Cliver Barker, which was included on the album cover to the vinyl version, may have helped to perpetuate this myth: "The only group I've heard on disc whose records I've taken off because they made my bowels churn"

A-side tracks from the 10"/cassette version and all tracks from the CD version later appeared on the Unnatural History II compilation. B-side tracks from the 10"/cassette version later appeared as a single track on Unnatural History III.
This is the only release on the record label Solar Lodge, with catalog number COIL 1. The cassette version was licensed to Soleilmoon and released in 1990, with catalog number SOL 4. The cassette features a different cover than the CD and vinyl release.

Princess Tinymeat - Herstory

Princess Tinymeat was formed by Haa-Lacka Bintii *AKA* Daniel Figgiss. Figgiss was a drummer / keyboard player with the Virgin Prunes in the early '80s. With bandmates Tom Rice and Sissybox they released three Singles and a compilation album as Princess Tinymeat.

Their big hits in the clubs at the time were "Devilcock!" and the "Angels In Pain" 12", featuring lyrics lifted from the W. B. Yeats poem "The Song of Wandering Aengus", the last stanza of which reads:
Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

Daniel Figgiss has since become a solo experimental musician and composer under his own name. Here is a link to his personal webspace. This is a great collection of 7" and 12" releases that is sure to please your inner 80s club kid.

A Return To Wonderland

This is my final post here at Digital Meltdown. I hope you all have enjoyed having me as much as I have enjoyed posting here. I would appreciate any feedback you have about my postings here. There is a bit of a melancholy air in my tone because I have so much music to share and I feel I've only revealed a 1/10th of what I am about. This is a very nice blog here and I am sure I will come here time to time to comment and nab some great music. (I pick up a Negativland album here not too long ago. Joy! :D )My time ending here doesn't mean we cannot still talk music. Feel free to contact me, especially if you have an extensive knowledge of music @ my LastFM or MySpace page; which some of you already have or on AIM. Screen name: AllyBeingAlly.

I love learning about new music from people and sharing my finding with others. I leave you with something to remember me by: the American McGee's Alice soundtrack. It is one of my favorite soundtracks and video games of all-time. It's nice dark ambient music by Chris Vrenna (of Tweaker and NIN) Enjoy and take care! Premature Ejaculation- Anesthesia

Premature Ejaculation. The mere mention of the words can make a man blush and a girl sigh with disappointment. It is two of the worst words that can ever be uttered, unless you are talking about the Rozz Williams (of Christian Death and Shadow Project fame) side project.

Those of you who are thinking Premature Ejaculation is just an extension of Christian Death, need not apply. Arguably the most unique and controversial project of Rozz Williams, Premature Ejaculation was an experimental, industrial, noise outfit that included outrageous on-stage theatrics including the eating of roadkill (a dead cat.) While not nearly as accessible as Christian Death or Shadow Project, it is worth experiencing for you Rozz fans out there.

The album I present to you is called, "Anesthesia." It is one of PE's most recognized effort. There are virtually no lyrics throughout the entire album, just nine pieces of dark ambient music. The standout tracks include: "Red," " Transillumination," and "The Most Astounding Living Monstrosity." Hopefully, this will satisfy your dark ambient craving and you will not find this Premature Ejaculation effort unfulfilling and limp. Cheers!

Swans - Children Of God

Kicking off with "New Mind", which while having the same general pace of most earlier Swans songs, also sounds distinctly different with its clearer, inventive arrangement, call-and-response vocals, and Gira's declamatory but not screamed lead vocal, Children of God finds the band making their own particular great leap forward. The simmering changes that were apparent in the albums just before this one's release fully come to the fore, as Swans take the courage to explore both their huge-sounding, bombastic side and gentle, if often still disturbing, delicacy (due credit especially to Westberg, Kizys, and Parsons, possibly the best musical lineup Swans ever had until the final years). The results are fascinating, ranging from the spare piano melting into ambient feedback of "In My Garden" and the twisted gospel blues of "Our Love Lies" to the acoustic guitar and organ on "You're Not Real, Girl" and the raging pounder "Beautiful Child." Equally importantly, if not more so, Jarboe now assumes a full role with Gira as co-leader of the band; while all lyrics are still Gira's, the two share lead vocal duties (though aside from the title track, no duets) throughout the album. The weary, evocative croon which Gira developed into his major vocal trademark here emerges to full effect (though he can still roar with the best of them at points) while Jarboe's cool, rich tones are simply astounding, as evidenced on an even more compelling version of "Blackmail," originally from the A Screw EP. Though Children is dedicated without any apparent irony to Jesus Christ, Gira's words remain as irreverent, challenging, and obsessed with overarching issues of religion, power, sex, love, and control as before, but with an ever-increasing depth and beauty to match the lusher musical textures. With flute, oboe, and strings adding further texturing to the often quite lovely songs created by the band, Children remains perhaps the key album of Swans' career, the clear signpost towards their ever-more ambitious albums in the future.

Einstürzende Neubauten - Kollaps

Einstürzende Neubauten's first album, as one might imagine, is their most primitive and radical effort, the purest expression of their original aesthetic. This makes the album both historically significant and conceptually intriguing, of course, but what's most interesting about this album is that it still sounds surprising decades after its release. Often, albums that are considered extreme art statements upon their debut sound almost quaint a few years later, but while Kollaps perhaps sounds less extreme to ears that heard industrial music turned into disco pabulum by the likes of Nine Inch Nails than it did before, songs like the eight-minute title track and the rumbling live closer, "Negativ Nein," are still a fascinating blend of rhythm and random bashing, tonality and atonality, with anguished vocals by Blixa Bargeld that often seem to have little connection with anything else in the piece. The brief tracks, like the 80-second "Sehnsucht," are even more extreme explorations of pure noise. Starting as early as the next album, Einstürzende Neubauten would begin slowly introducing more mainstream musical concepts into their aesthetic, making Kollaps as undiluted a listening experience as there is in the entire catalog.
