25mm Old Glory Medieval - Revolting Peasants - Part 8 - Spouses, Siblings and More

Here we move into using up the duplicates on multi-figure bases.

Many looked like husbands and wives or siblings, from the kids to a pair of bearded fellows. This makes not a whit of difference for any particular game but makes for some unique and interesting pairings, and could help with certain storytelling narratives. It's hard to imagine a game where I'll need all 160ish peasants at once, though now that I think about it ...

First is actually from Reaper Miniatures: Townsfolk XII Pillory & Kids. The kids were mixed in with the OG stone throwers where I had them stored out of the blister. When researching, I saw the man in the stocks went with it and that they were not throwing stones at all but tomatoes. I painted them red before recalling tomatoes didn't show up in Europe until the 1500s, so I threw some magenta contrast on there, making them plums. They were already tagged as revoting peasants in my storage system, so I'm folding them into this Old Glory project:

The Vallejo Mud effect is till wet on all of these!

Another detour comes from Brite Minis and these 3D printed "Human Corpses." I picked them up at Historicon this year. The print layers are VERY apparent, marring any and all fine detail, and I won't get any more of them, but they were dirt cheap, and from a distance none will be the wiser:

Finally - on to Old Glory:

My goodness, how revolting these peasants are!!  Number three is stabbing at some horse droppings. I may need to highlight these a bit more as they blend in with the mud too well.

These are the old Husbands and Wives

A pair of looters in the center - flanked by pairs of torch bearers.

The lads on the right struck me as being brothers.

Group shot!

Here's the whole update - 26 more figures. This brings the count up to a total of 115 rather appalling peasants completed. I'll do some master shots once the project is completed. I'm well past the midway point, but I'm adding bits and bobs here and there that I consider appropriate.

Some of these would make good witch or monster hunters, and some could be witches themselves. In either case, I'm well set.

Two more updates to go - both comparable but with some peripheral figures from other brands mixed in, a pair of beggars, some revolting royalty, and some carrying holy banners.

28mm Reaper Miniatures - Maria Roseblade

Little blurry, but you get the idea. I found the pictures, not the miniature itself, in a file called "Reaper" all by themselves. These photos were taken in December of 2005, when I was more focused on this kind of thing.

I think I painted this at the request of a friend of mine who wanted her player character for D&D on the tabletop. Occasionally, I come across the question in forums about how much one has improved their painting over the years. This one suggests I may be worsening! Looks pretty good to me! Probably Polly-S paints too.

Further, I didn't start this blog until 2010, and I was pretty active in the early 2000s, painting for our group. Some have been posted here already, others I stumbled across quite by accident, as I did this one. There'll be more from that era in between current projects as I find them.

28mm Reaper Miniatures - Cave Goblins - Breakers, Warriors & Archers

As I often do, I thought I'd whip these out quickly. About five long days later they are finished:

This is actually all three packs of Cave Goblins (I keep calling them "Goblins of the Cave" - a nod to bats, that are called "Chicken of the Cave" in one of the Anchorman sequels.)

I used a mix of Contrast/Speed paints as well as my usual layering techniques. For the skin, I actually started with a blue wash over a light gray basecoat to give them a cold tone. Lotta drab colors though make them blend in a bit with the cavern background.

I also used a lot more washes and glazes over this and that - reddened up the noses, knees, knuckles. I also tried another glowing eye effect as the sculpted eyes were not much bigger than a brush point. Most of the pupils are sculpted well enough but they are so tiny, I decided not to bother and risk screwing up the skin with he inevetable errant strokes.
Hard to tell from the pics but I put in little piles of gold coins using glitter suitable for that purpose. Under the lights they are quite sparkly.

Monkeying around with the lighting here.

They really disappear into the background here.

This was supposed to be a quick side project (they are all side projects), but probably more scarecrows, Frostgrave Wizards II or Silver Bayonet Austrians coming up next.

28mm Reaper Miniatures - Fellclaw, Scarecrow Guardian

Though Halloween is in the rear view, we are still in Fall so I'm gonna finish and post more scarecrows that are near completion. The villains, as you may have noticed, almost neatly divide between pumpkin headed monstrosities and regular ol' scarecrow types. The last of the pumpkin headed ones are the cavalry from the Wars of Ozz range; I'll get to them soon. Before I get to that though I have a murder of scarecrows from Foundry that are almost done.

But first, this monster from Reaper:

I started with a black undercoat, gray zenithal, then Speed and Contrast paints. But again for me, it looked awful. So I just used those layers as a base and built up and shaded from there depending on the piece. Boots and the claws and "skin"  I mostly left the speed paint but added a highlight.

First time using fluorescent paints in the eyes to get a glowing effect. They came out ok.

I used a bunch of the leaves I punched out with the Green Stuff World punches. They are too bright - but a thin coat of Contrast browns worked great to make them appear more natural. The skull on the base got lost among the same leaves necessitating this overhead shot.

You can see this entire collection painted up so far by clicking "Sleepy Hollow" in the cloud at left or click here.

Austrians for Silver Bayonet are also nearing completion.

28mm Reaper Rotpatch, Pumpkin Golem

Another monster from the Pumpkin King's corrupted retinue! I started with a slap-chop then ended up using speed paints/contrast mostly as a base coat for the pumpkins and vines. At the end I went over it all with more opaque highlights.I spent more time rusting up the scythe - it's really rusty! This is one where I know I could do more, but I just had enough and wanted to move on.

The base was plain and spare so I painted up a pair of  pumpkins to adorn it, adding a mix of my Green Stuff World leaf punch output, first gen Highland Tufts from Army Painter, some static grass and a single tuft of 12mm Spikey Beige from Gamer's Grass to give some height to the floor proceedings.

Watching YouTube painters have given me some ideas and I think I'm ready to step up off my plateau on new miniatures. I have much already underway so the change will be likely gradual.

More supernatural pumpkin monsters coming in the next day or two! Stay tuned!

25/28mm - Citadel/Games Workshop - Walls and Fences

These used to be quite common and I've passed on them numerous times at stores and at cons. And then GW did it's dirty old trick and took them out of production. Whenever I find an old game shop I used to take a look and see if any were left around. At GW stores themselves I may have asked for some Chasseurs à Cheval de la Garde Impériale! They had no idea what I was talking about  - one guy told me they never made them!

Not a year ago I went to GW's site on a lark and lo there it was in my search results. I should have bought two, but one arrived shortly later in a plain white packing pox sans the original photo box that many are familiar with.

Today, I look it up and the site comes up blank. Bah! I experimented on his set, thinking I could get another one and do it properly. So this is more dear to me than it was not 10 minutes ago.

The "experiment" was to black prime then pre-highlight in white which my daughter helped with. This amounted to a pretty heavy drybrush that made me think of a wood cut with sharp, alternating lines of sheer black and white.

This was followed by Citadel Contrast Colors - Basilicanum Gray for the stones, Wyldwood Brown for the wooden fencing, one of the yellows for the wattle fencing. They could have been finished at that point but there were a fair amount of details to pick out, ubiquitous skulls, iron rings, logs and misc.

Pumpkin folk by Reaper

I drybrushed over it all again with various highlight colors building up to close to white/tan to finish.

I like that you can make two enclosed spaces with this set - a small graveyard in the stone one, then something else in the wooden fences. Or you could just line a road withe either or both in combination. Pretty versatile. Those are a mix of Citadel, WestWind/Old Glory and other gravestones there featured already at this blog.

The wattle bits were far two yellow in my original pass so I attempted to get more tan on there.

This method looked fine everywhere except for the sun emblem thing - the black/white didn't look great with a yellow Contrast but it's the part of the wall I'll likely leave off anyway for most games. The broken wheel came out ok though.

Maybe you saw the snotling under the log there at right - clever touch from GW of course.

All in all I'm pretty happy with this set and do regret not having another.

Yet MORE walls and linear obstacles to come! I do everything but paint soldiers it seems.
