Garfield Out of Context (and Horrifying)

When I saw this puzzle at a garage sale, my mind immediately thought "Garfield is holding the severed head of John."

First Day Blues (and Reds and Yellows and Greens and Purples and ...)

I'm still reminiscing about school days and every year when school starts up, I always reflect upon my own "dear old golden rule days" back in the 1970's.  Throw in this recent find, and I'm instantly transported back to my first day of school at Point Elementary in South St. Louis County, Missouri.

What was on TV September 18th through 24th, 1976 -- Fall Preview Edition

Hang onto your hats and get out your reading glasses. It's time for the Fall Preview issue of TV Guide.  This time from September of 1976.  I wasn't quite in my prime yet as  a TV watcher at this time, but soon would be.  I was still sharing Saturday mornings with my sister and prime time with my brothers. But soon, soon I would rule the TV roost.  In America, we were on the downside of the Bicentennial and headed straight for the Disco era. Let's take a look at what exciting offerings were made by the big 3 in 1976.

Santa and Me

The arrival of Santa Claus at malls across America used to be the kickoff to the Christmas season and was often a grandiose affair involving helicopter landings and high school bands. These photos with Santa harken back to those days when children waited in long lines expectantly, if a little nervous and unsure. They chronicle one little girl's (Judy Sutter's) visits to the man in red through the 1950's and '60's.

Sugar Candles

These crystallized "sugar candles" are gaining in popularity.  I recall these from the '70's.

The sight of this VHS tape at a recent garage sale brought back memories of one of my childhood Kindertraumas

What was on TV May 1st through 7th, 1971

It's time once again for "What was on TV" and we pick up where we left off on our last issue.  This week's cover features Mary Tyler Moore and child actress Lisa Gerritsen.

Along with Pamelyn Ferdin and Kim Richards, Lisa Gerritsen completed the triumvirate of 1970's television child actresses you recognized, but never really associated with a particular character.  You just knew them.
