First Day Blues (and Reds and Yellows and Greens and Purples and ...)

I'm still reminiscing about school days and every year when school starts up, I always reflect upon my own "dear old golden rule days" back in the 1970's.  Throw in this recent find, and I'm instantly transported back to my first day of school at Point Elementary in South St. Louis County, Missouri.

School Bus Memories

It's school time once again, and actually has been for the last few weeks.  I'm running a little behind on posts.

Anyway, it's school time once again, and school buses are on the streets.  This isn't one of those PSAs to advise you to watch for kids.  It's just a lead-in for one of my latest finds.

I went to at an estate sale of a former bus driver for a local elementary school last weekend.  There were lots of items that had clearly been given to him by his passengers through the years.  One that caught my eye was this Toy Bus Animal Crackers box.

Rule the School

With school back in session, it's a good time to review some common sense rules you can apply in your daily life, even if you're not in school.  This ruler lays down the rules.

Back to School

It's back to school time once again. These days, kids go packed off literally packed.  Even the youngest carry book bags nearly as big as themselves.

When I was a kid, I was lucky to start off with a box of Crayolas (the 16-pack, not even the 48 or heaven forbid the 64) and a pencil.  If you were really fortunate (and I never was), you got to start off with one of these.

Flash Cards of Note

I found these music flashcards at the estate sale of a former music teacher.  They date from the 40's.

We laugh in your face, Mr. Creepy Note

While the box has "Henry Teller & Son" on the front, the inside note attributes the cards to Musigame Features.

56 West 103rd Street, Chicago, Illinois.  Former site of Henry Teller and Sons.

21421 Sloan Drive, Harper Woods, Michigan.  Former site of Musicgame Features.

The teacher is advised to track their students progress.

"Name a Note" was somewhat simple.  The letter note on one side of the card:

And the bar note on the other.

"Name a Chord" is a little more involved.

Back to School

I was hesitant to buy this since it was such a large piece, but when the seller agreed to lower the price from $8 to $6, I decided to get it.

My youngest daughter who hasn't started school yet has taken ownership and enjoys drawing at it.

Dear Old Golden Rule Days

With the last day of school upon us, I'm reaching back into Charlotte's scrapbook for a look at elementary school of the 1920's and '30's.  Specifically, that day dreaded by all children: report card day.  Although, it looks like Charlotte did okay, earning A's and B's and even receiving a "Notification of Meritorious Work".  Charlotte attended the old Oakville School located in Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.  All cards are signed by her father, Charles Krejci, at least I'm assuming they are.  With those grades, she had no reason to forge her parents' signatures like I used to.
