Bronson's First Week

We are so glad to have Bronson with us now. We can't believe it's already been over a week since he was born! A few things we learned about him during his first week plus with us are:
  • It looks like he is going to be a very good eater, just like his two older sisters. He had no problems figuring out how to 'latch on' on his first attempt and hasn't really slowed down since then. The night after he was born and we were still in the hospital the nurses were surprised when they weighed him and he was 6lbs 14oz, which was only 3oz less than his birth weight.
  • Shaylin and Emmalyn adore him. They love to just be close to him and they really love getting to hold him. Shaylin is constantly asking and Emmalyn is always excitedly saying 'Baby!' wanting to hold him.
  • His older sisters really don't like to hear him cry. They are always rushing over to see what the matter is and Shaylin is quick to offer suggestions as to why he is crying and what we can do to get him to stop.
  • He got us excited by sleeping for two ~ 5 hour stretches during his 3rd and 4th nights at home. Since then he has done 2-4 hour stretches of sleeping at night.
  • He does not like to have a dirty diaper. As soon as he goes he starts to fuss and that fussing quickly turns into full blown crying until his diaper is changed. We're keeping our fingers crossed that this will somehow translate into him wanting to be potty trained earlier, but we're not holding our breath.
  • He doesn't like the diaper changing process either. He cries through the whole thing until it's over and he's wrapped back up in a warm blanket.
  • He likes his pacifier (or 'binky' as we like to call it) so far. We're hoping that keeps up because that's how Shaylin was and she never sucked her thumb. Emmalyn never liked a binky but sucked her thumb.
  • He has already 'watched' his first Arizona Cardinals game with Matt. Matt is looking forward to watching many more with him in the future.
Dec 6th - 1 Day Old

This was Shaylin and Emmalyn's first chance to hold Bronson, shortly after we got home from the hospital. They couldn't have been more happy and excited...

Dec 8th - 3 Days Old

There's a reason half these pictures are of Shaylin and/or Emmalyn holding Bronson - because they've been wanting to hold him all the time!

Bronson in another outfit. We needed to change his outfit about 2-3 times per day during the first week because of him getting pee all over himself most the time he peed.

Dec 10th - 5 Days Old

He looked so cute 'hugging' his burp cloth. He likes to wrap his arms around blankets and burp cloths.

Dec 12th - 7 Days Old

Bronson's first bath at home was quite the experience. As soon as he got in the water he pee'd all over the place (we've heard stories, but we're still amazed at how far little boy babies can pee!). He wasn't a big fan of the bath, as you can see. Then, as soon as we got him out and wrapped up in a towel he showed us how happy he was with us by making the biggest poop he's ever had in the towel!

Content in the towel after taking care of business...

We took a picture like this when Emmalyn was just a little baby and Shaylin was HUGE compared to her. So we decided to take a similar one with Bronson. He's got a lot of growing to do if he's ever going to catch up to his sisters!

Handsome little Bronson all wrapped up in a warm blanket...

After his first bath Shaylin and Emmalyn got to hold him. They were all smiles again!

Dec 13th - 8 Days Old

We have a feeling we're going to be taking a lot of these pictures, partly because Shaylin asks to have her picture taken when she's holding him.

This is a cute picture of Shaylin from the day Bronson was born (Dec 5th) while our families were hanging out outside of the hospital that we didn't get into our last post...

For some reason Bronson's car seat quickly became Emmalyn and Shaylin's favorite toy, so we ended up having to put it away when we're not using it. Here they are playing in it on Dec 9th...

Here's a few cute pics from Dec 11th of Emmalyn and Shaylin playing well together and having fun sitting in the laundry basket...

Bronson Kale

Dec. 5th

Our son, Bronson Kale, was born at about 6:50 am on Saturday Dec. 5th. at the Chandler hospital. He weighed 7lbs 1oz and was 20 inches long. We had a scheduled induction (because Jayna's fluid was getting a little low) starting at 10pm the night before. They gave Jayna pitocin at about midnight that night and kept her on the lowest dose until Bronson arrived less then seven hours later. We'll try to get around to posting more of the background story of his birth, but for now we'll just keep it short and sweet so that we can actually get this post done and get some pictures up.

No sleep = goofy smiles from mom and dad...

Bronson resting after his first bath. He had a lot of bruising on his face, so he was actually very purple for the first day in the hospital. The nurses all said it was because of how fast he came out. It only took Jayna about three contractions to push him out.

We were lucky enough to have most of both of our families come visit us and meet Bronson while we were in the hospital:

Jayna's parents, Jaylene and Jay -

Matt's parents, Mitzi and Curt -

Jayna's siblings (starting top right and going clockwise) Jayden, Jaycob, Jayson, and Jaymee -

Matt's brothers, John and Nate -

Becca and Andy tried to figure out a time to visit but with everything they had going on and all the different things we had going on in the hospital we weren't able to make it work. Bronson was able to meet Becca shortly after we came home on Sunday.

All three of us getting ready to leave...

Matt's mom was nice enough to bring the girls up in our van to pick us up. We've been telling Shaylin for months now that when the baby came she was going to get moved to the back seat in the middle. She was so excited to be sitting back there - we think it makes her feel even more grown up! This picture was shortly after she and Emmalyn met Bronson. Shaylin was mostly just excited to meet him but Emmalyn seemed a bit confused as to why we were bringing a baby home with us.

Thanksgiving Weekend

Nov 26th

We had a very good Thanksgiving this year. After an early dinner up at the Brugman's we headed back to Becca and Andy's house for dinner with the Hedges followed by our traditional game of Thanksgiving Bingo where we play Bingo for little prizes.

Emmalyn getting excited after opening one of her Bingo prizes, a balloon with a rubber band tied to it for bouncing around...

Shaylin with John and Lacey after opening her prizes...

Shaylin really got a kick out of wearing the reindeer antlers that grandma and grandpa Hedges got for the grandkids. In fact, a few days later before watching a Christmas movie she asked us to wait to start it, ran out of the room, and then came back with the antlers on. She then sat on the couch and told us that she was ready.

All of the grandkids except Bronson and Justin with their uncle Nate - Jessica, Christian, Declan, Emmalyn, and Shaylin...

We caught Declan reading Emmalyn a book in the kitchen while we were over at Becca and Andy's and luckily we got a picture of them.

Nov 29th

We talked both sides of the family into making a trip to the Mesa Temple to see the Christmas lights. We wanted to go not only to see the lights, but also to walk around a bunch and help Jayna progress with the baby.

We were lucky enough to have Grandma Olsen come down for our nephew Justin's baby blessing. Here she is reading Shaylin a bed time story.
