Space Wolves Vs. Blood Angels Video BatRep

by Thomas aka Goatboy from Bell of Lost Souls.
Hey Bear Cubs, Grizz here. Was able to swing down to Dicehead Games today and get a game in against my good buddy Wiley the Nord. He was needin to practice for the 'Ard Boyz this weekend, and I'm always in the mood for a good game so I added 500 points to my Space Wolves and headed to Cleveland.

40K Ard Boyz Preliminary Scenario 2:

objective in each Deployment table quarter is worth 1 point.  The objectives in the empty
table quarters are worth 2 points and the objective in the center of the board is worth 4
points.

Length of Game:
This game last 6 turns, or until time is called, so that each player completes the same

+1 If your opponent has no units in your deployment zone.
+1 if all your hq choices are alive at the end of the game.

Well it turned out to be one heck of a game, with the mission objectives coming to a dead draw, with me scrapin by with 3 of the Battle Point modifiers to Wiley's 1. I am still lovin the Wolves, their versatility is unrivaled. The Thunderwolf Lord is incredible, with an unreal threat range and substantial killing power. All in all a successful day.

Well, we finally got another video batrep up, sorry it took so long. Questions/comments/criticisms/critiques/whatever the hell else you have to say, just put it below, Thanks for Readin!!

The Times They Are A Changin...

Is this the new face of 40k?
Sorry for the long delay, but now we are back on track. I finally got some games in, and actually have some 40k stuff to talk about. Anyway, on to the good stuff!

Over the last couple of days, and the last few games, The Grizz may have come to a realization. There may have been a fundamental change in the game of Warhammer 40,000. Maybe its the new area, new lists, new players, or maybe its just a shift in the overall meta game, I don't know. Something, however, is different.

Go Me
What is different, you ask? Lists that work. I played in a tournament Saturday and brought my usual Blood Angel tournament list. Out of the 8 people that participated, Yours Truly came in dead last. Thats right, dead effin last. First round I played against a 3 long fang/razor-heavy Space Wolf list. Second was a rhino heavy hestan list. Finally I played against Wiley the Nord's 5 venom flyer heavy Dark Eldar army.

In all of these games, my DoA army had shooting issues. Now, I am very aware that my Blood Angel army is not the shootiest army in existence, but I have always had just enough, and have been able to rely on my assault abilities. With all the transports, all the shooting, is it possible to play a foot based list any more? With the release of Dark Eldar and Grey Knights, can you run a list with minimal transports and still win consistently? I am starting to think you can't. Armies like Tyranids don't have a chance. If I take my Nid army to a tournament and face one, just one Grey Knight player with a half a brain, I may as well just go ahead and put a check in the L column.

Typed Venom Spam into Google,
This was the first result.
Without transports, there is no way to hide from the poisoned shots and the S5 storm bolter shots. And with my specific DoA list, if 1 or 2 shots miss, then I have serious issues, as then I am having to pop transports in assault, leaving me open to my opponents' shooting phase. I don't know what they are makin rhinos out of these days, but they aren't as easy to bust as they used to be, and there is a whole lot more of them. The weirdest thing is, is that for me at least, it happened overnight. I feel like my competitive list went from good to uncompetitive in less than a month.

Like I said before, maybe its due to the change in the meta game from where I used to play to where I play now, though it feels like something more fundamental, something deeper. Now I am not saying this is a bad thing, and maybe everyone else is already aware of this and I am just behind the ball on this deal, I dunno. I do know, however, that in order to compete, My lists, my game, my style will have to change.

So, is The Grizz  off base? Is he late to the party? Or has there been a shift recently in the overall way that the game was played?

Updates

Well, today has been quite successful. Thanks to my buddy Shane at Dicehead Games and Comics, i was able to sell off all my fantasy stuff, and walked out of his store today with -

Carnifex Kit - Tervigon conversion
Hormagant box

Space Wolves Grey Hunter Box
Devastator Box
Canis Wolfborn - on order - Finecast
Logan Grimnar - On Order - Finecast
5 bricks of Chessex Dice

Stormraven

So, needless to say, I have plenty to work with. I am currently tryin to get my Blood Angels completely painted for a tournament next weekend, somethin that should have been done a long time ago. I had a thought to paint up one of my Assault squads as a successor chapter, then make both of my other RAS from different companies, just to give the army some flavor. We will see, however.

What I plan on runnin next week

Librarian
---Jump Pack, Shield of Sang., Sang. Sword
Sang. Guard
---Jump Pack
3x10 RAS
---Melta, Flamer, Fisty Sarge

Furioso Dread
---Frag Cannon, HF, Drop Pod

Lemmiwinks
3x7 Death Co.
3x bp/ccw, 3x bp/pw, 1x PF
DC Dread
---Blood Talons
Stormraven
---Multi Melta, Ass. Cannon, Extra Armor

Stormraven
---Lascannon, Cyc. ML, EA

Wantin to try out Lemmiwinks, as he can be such a beast, as well as I7 on the charge, and getting to reroll the hits and wounds. I have been wanting to try the 2 Raven list, as the mobility and the firepower can be devastating. I don't know whether or not to drop the jp's off of a RAS and stick them in there, making it a mobile scoring unit, that remains to be seen.

Well thats all for now, hopefully once things get settled, I will get back into playin some games and start makin posts with a lil more substance, till then peace out!

To Thunderwolf Or Not To Thunderwolf

Well, between the moving, packing, and cleaning, I somehow found time to finally get my first game in with my Space Wolves. My good friend Pariah.Stevo from over at Tainted By Xenos (which is back up and running BTW) came over to help me move and while waiting for the Storage unit we squeezed a game in. I took a very different list than i normally take, as it was a shooty list with no deathstar, as I wanted to see how certain things work. I took -

Wolf Lord
---Runic armor, Frost Axe, SS, Wolftooth Necklace

4x Wolf Guard
---Combimeltas & PFs

4x Grey Hunters Squads, 3x9, 1x8
---Plasma, Rhino w/ Hunter Killer Missile

2x Rune Priests
---Liv. Light./Jaws
---Liv. Light./Jaws, Melta Bombs

2x Long Fang Squads
---3x MLs, 2x LCs
---Razorback w/ LC/TLPG, HK Missile

Vindicator
---HK Missile

Steve took his tournament Ork list, which entails - Ed. Steve, if this is wrong correct me

Ghazghkull
Mek w/ KFF & Power Klaw
A squad of Nobz with Cybork bodies, WAAAGH Banner, Bosspole
Battlewagon w/ Deffrolla, Red Paint

17 Shoota Boys
Nob w/ Boss pole, Power klaw
Battlewagon w/ deffrolla

16 Shoota Boys

Nob w/ Boss pole, Power klaw
Battlewagon w/ deffrolla

2x15 Lootas

2x Deffcoptas w/ buzzsaws

Babysitting grot squad

What Should've Happened
Ok, so basically Murphy and his law came in and beat the ever livin crap out of me from turn one. We rolled Dawn of War, so Ghazghkull started halfway across the board and night fighting caused me to do absolutely zilch for damage. The next turn sees 6 lascannons (2 at side armor),2 Missile Launchers, 2 HK missiles (at side armor) and a Demolisher Cannon (side armor) give me one immobilized result and a Crew Shaken result on Ghazzy's wagon. Awesome. Ghazghkull then proceeds to charge me from across the board.

What Did Happen
From then till the end of turn four when we called it I watched 9 shoota shots kill 7 grey hunters in one roll, 2 lascannons bounce off AV 12, a Wolf Lord kill a whopping 2 Ork nobs (over 4 rounds of assault), a grey hunter squad shoot and charge a shoota boy squad and cause a grand total of 3 wounds, then watched Steve roll three 6s, pretty much my dice hated me. With a vengeance. over the course of the day I failed 7 of 9 vehicle 4+ covers. Not my day.

God do I love a good Beatstick...
Now, although I deployed wrong, my dice completely failed me, and Steve's were on fire, and after such a game it is a terrible idea to immediately redo your army list, I have begun to think about new units. Now, if you haven't figured this out about me by now, i like a good beatstick. I carry a .45, I hunt with a 7mm Rem. Mag., I drive a V8. I like em big and powerful. Looking back at all my armies, every build I have ever liked has a deathstar in it. My old Ultras had Hestan and TH/SS Termies in a LRR. Blood Angels have the Chappie/DC/DC Dread/Stormraven combo, Chaos has either Abaddon/Plagues/LR or 2x MoN DPs and a GD,  my Nids have the Trygons. I like beatsticks.

Which brings me to my current dilemma. How do I run an effective, shooty SW army and still have a good beatstick in there to help with the Vects and Ghazghkulls out there? I then began to read the Thunderwolf Cavalry entry. Dear. God. These dudes mean business, with a true T5 and 4 base attacks. And a not so terrible price tag. This unit could fill in that little deathstar sized hole in my heart. So I revamped the list, and came up with this -

Wolf Lord
---Frost Axe, SS, Runic Armor, WT Necklace, Thunderwolf Mount, Saga of the Bear
5x Thunderwolf Cavalry
---BP/CCW
---BP/SS
---Plasma Pistol/CCW
---BP/CCW, Melta Bombs
---BP/TH

4x Wolf Guard
---Combi Melta, PF
4x9 Grey Hunters
---Plasma Gun, Rhino

2x Long Fang Packs
---3x ML/2x LC

Vindicator

1999pts.

That way, I am runnin a similar army that is shooty, but still has a beatstick. Now, I'll just have to proxy some TWC and see how I like em before I drop the dough for em. Still haven't found a company who's TWC I really love, but maybe y'all can help me with that :)

So what do we think? Are TWC the way to go? Is The Grizz's new plan absolute crap? Are there good lookin TWC models out there? Let us know below!

Goodbye To An Old Friend...

I miss you already ;..(
Today marked the first time in a long time that I played a 2000pt Blood Angel list minus my big man, my Great Bambino, The Sanguinor. Ol' Sangy is an amazing piece of work. He truly is a unit that supports, protects, and makes the rest of your army better. He is a great deathstar slayer, and makes IC's shake in their boots. He is a beautiful model, and a fountain of wrath, and he is currently sitting on my shelf, as opposed to on the table.

It was a hard decision, but I think it is for the best interest of myself and my list's competitiveness. Although I typically ran 4 troops, only two of them scored. I felt like I was always fighting with an arm tied behind my back. So I dropped the Sanguinor, freeing up enough points to put in another RAS. One would not think this to be such a game changer, but in today's games versus Wolves, the flexibility, durability, and extra boots on the ground were immediately noticeable. my list today -

Librarian
---Sang. Sword, Shield Of Sang, Jump Pack\

Sang. Priest
---JP, PW

Furioso Dread
---Frag Cannon, Heavy Flamer

Chaplain
---Melta Bombs
Death Co.
---3x BP/CCW, 3x BP/PW, 1x BP/PF
Death Co. Dread
---Blood Talons
Stormraven
---TLAC, TLMM, EA

3x RAS
---7x BP/CCW,  Flamer, Melta, Fisty Sarge

2x Predators
---AC, LC sponsons

2000pts

I ran Libby, Priest, and 3x RAS together in a pack, giving all 3 Furious Charge and a 5+ cover save, and it worked out well. I was most of all surprised at how much more versatile and flexible I became, and the big RAS blob was vicious and self supporting. The Frag Dread was awesome, as always, and the DC, Dread, Chappie, and Stormraven were once again my favorite combo in the game. I will miss ol's Sanguinor, but I just couldn't keep him AND the DC in the same list, so I had to choose.

Dear God not THAT one!!!
It was too many points in deathstars/hq's, and I needed more scoring units. One idea I have toyed around with is taking out the chappie and running Ol' Lemmiwinks with the DC, giving them some more killing power as I am losing Sanguinor and dropped them to 7. I will prolly playtest him and see how he does. Anyway, enough ramblings for now, y'all take it easy!

Have y'all ever had a unit you loved but just wasn't working in your particular list? Tell us about it!

Back On Track

Ok guys, thanks for bearing with me, Finals are over, College is in the books, and I am now just another unemployed graduate lookin for work! over the course of Finals week, I was able to get in a couple games of 40k with Pariah.Stevo of Tainted By Xenos fame. He brought his Grey Knights and Dark Eldar and I brought the Nids. The first game was Capt. And Control, vs GK.

What Stevo Opened up on me with his GK's
I basically watched a Grand Master w/ rad grenades and a purifier squad walk through 2 Trygons and storm bolter fire annihilate all my gaunts, with my Tyrant/guard/Prime never getting into assault. Sad day for Hive Fleet Cerberus. So I changed up my list a lil bit for the next game, Kill points vs. Dark Eldar. I ran;

2 Tervigons
3x 16 strong Hormagants
2x 3 strong Hive Guard
2x Trygon Primes
3x Venomthropes

Game was a close one, coming down to 12-10 kps, Stevo pullin it out. Hormagants w/ Feel No Pain via the  tervigons are nigh unkillable, and Trygons pumpin out 12 St. 5 shots a piece were downin skimmers left and right. I think that i am hangin up the Tyrant Deathstar unit for a while, a crap ton of points for very little gain thus far. 2 Tervigons = awesomesauce. I fell in love with this list, as there are more hooves on the ground and it is overall more effective. 3 units of Toxin Sac/Adrenal Gland Hormagants are a bear to take out, especially when they have FnP.

Playing against two extremely shooty armies made me realize something. None of my armies are balanced. All of them are killer assaulty, with minimal firepower. It would be nice to have an army that can shoot as well as it assaults. I then started gettin the new army itch (again) and started lookin for my balanced answer. As I was cleaning up my hobby room, I began to find all of my Space Marine stuff that I don't use that I have had since before my BA, all the stuff that was gonna be Salamanders. Well, no offense to anyone, but I hate the SM codex. It is a very viable dex, i just don't care for any of the builds out of it. Then my eyes fell on the Space Wolves.

Codex: Space Wolves is like the perfect blend of what I was looking for. Great Troop Choices, like my Chaos, without the heavy price tag points wise, yet good in assault, like my BA. And they cant shoot the lights out. Then I realized that with all the SM crap I have, i am only about 40 Grey Hunters away from a new army. So, I get a new army, more balanced, for next to nothing comparatively? Yes Please!

So that brings the army total to 4
---Chaos
---Blood Angels
---Tyranids
---Space Wolves

All very different armies, and all very flavorful. I have thrown a list together, an idea of kinda where I want to head.

Wolf Lord in Terminator Armor
---Storm Shield, Frost Weapon, Wolf tail Talisman, Saga of the Bear
2x Wolf Guard in Terminator Armor
---Storm Shield, Frost Weapon
2x Wolf Guard in Terminator Armor
---Storm shield, Thunder Hammer
Drop Pod

4x Wolf Guard in Power Armor
---Combi Meltas, PF's

4x Grey Hunters Packs
---9x Strong, 1x Flamer, Rhino

2x Long Fang Packs
---6x Strong, 2x LCs, 3x ML's
2x Rune Priests
---JotWW& Living Lightning
---Murderous Hurricane & Tempests Wrath

Vindicator

1999pts

Well, thats all I got for now, feels good to be back!

So, what do we think of The Grizz's new army decisions? Will he be able to juggle all four armies? How will he fare with his new Wolves?

Back To Bugs

You can thank Pariah.Stevo for this pic
Ok, after a couple tourneys with the Chaos/BA, The Grizz is turnin his attention back toward the Tyranids. Just came up with a new list we are gonna be tryin out, hopefully I can learn these bad boys pretty quickly, as I would like to get them out on the tourney scene within the next month or two. Anyways, on to the list.

HQs
Tyrant
---LW/BS, TL Devourer, Old Adversary, Leech Essence, Paroxysm
3x Tyrant Guard
---3x LWs
Tyranid Prime
---LW/BS, Deathspitter, Ad. Glands

ELITES
2x Venomthropes
3x Hive Guard
3x Hive Guard

TROOPS
Tervigon
---Cluster Spines, Ad. Glands, Toxin Sacs, Catalyst
10x Termagants
---10x Devourers
16x Hormagants
---Toxin Sacs, Ad. Glands

16x Hormagants
---Toxin Sacs, Adren. Glands

HEAVY SUPPORT
Trygon Prime
---Ad. Glands
Trygon
---Ad. Glands

2000pts on the button. May not be the best, but you gotta start somewhere, and I think this has promise to be a good foundation on which to build from.

On a somewhat related note, made me up some objectives for my Nid army, somethin that matched their paint scheme and my personality.

So what do we think, is the list a hit or miss?

Way Too Early, Completely Pointless Vs. Grey Knight Tactica

So as you all know, I played in a 2000pt tourney a couple weeks back, and went 2-1-0. My lone loss came to the brand new Grey Knights. Going into the game, all I had heard about was how nasty Purifiers are and how you don't want to get close to em.

Well the guy I played had 5 squads of em, all in Razorbacks, all with psy bolt ammo, and a GM/Termie squad in a Storm Raven to top it all off. This game was very enlightening, giving me a better understanding of what they are capable of and what they do. So naturally, I thought I would share with you my current revelations. Now, I have not read the codex, nor have I played multiple games against them, so all this is general stuff, not in depth 100% accurate tactica.

1. Keep Your Head Down!

Probably the first thing I noticed about the GK is dear God what firepower. within 24" I don't know if there is an army that can match them, and psy bolt ammo makes them ungodly. Cheap HB razorbacks suddenly become 36" S6 monsters, with every marine throwin 2 S5 shots all over the place. Psy bolt ammo may be one of the nastiest introductions to the game, with its typical low cost and its availability to almost anything in the army.

if you are looking at it from this angle, its too late
Imagine a storm raven that within 12" can throw 4 S7 rending shots, 3 S6 shots, 12 S5 shots, all twin linked, not counting the missiles. Pure nasty. So, when playin these shiny bastards, you will wanna make sure you don't find yourself caught in that dead zone for long, pick one side or the other and get there quick. Now this also has an advantage for you. GK lack a whole lotta punch outside that range, so it is not hard to outgun them as long as you arent playing within their range.

2. They use a lot of Psychic Powers

Can Save Your Tookus
This one is kind of obvious, but worth mentioning. Grey Knight players roll a lot of psychic tests, and my guess is you will see a lot of people building lists that will hinge on certain psychic abilities. A psychic hood or similar device can really give GK's a headache. Even just stopping a third of their powers can go a long way to helping you weather the storm. I am seriously considering throwing a libby into my BA tourney list. Problem is, they got all kinds of stuff that royally screws psykers, so you will have to be careful.

3. They may look prettier, but on the inside, they're just like you and me

If it Kills him, it'll kill them.
I was very surprised at the lack of survivability of the Grey Knights. I don't know what I was expecting them to do, but it was weird to see them drop so easily. Then it hit me - They're just marines. They may say a few more prayers, have cooler toys, and be a lil shinier, but deep down, they are just the same ol' marines we all know and love. Which means that the same things that have killed marines since the 80s will kill Grey Knights today. Lots of attacks, power weapons, power fists, plasma all this stuff is just as effective on them as it is on us. I have yet to try it, but I am thinkin death companies and Stormravens can give GK's quite the pain in the hindquarters.

The distinct lack of 3++'s was very noticeable as well. His termies packed a punch, but dropped pretty easily. They also don't have that many attacks. a 5 man squad of purifiers and a 7 man squad of Plague Marines were actually pretty even in assault, also surprising.

4. Don't Be Afraid!

Not an effective tactic
I lost the game because I was afraid of his Purifiers and tried to play the range game with him. Not a good decision on my part. Had I just thrown my army down the table, I might have had a better chance. Don't be afraid to get in there and play in the mud. If you play in fear of his nastiness, then you are letting your opponent force you to play reactionary, which is always in their favor. Now I am not saying just put your models on the board and be an idiot. All I am sayin is that don't let the interwebz' nerd rage freak you out to the point where it hurts your ability to make tactically sound decisions.

Well that is all for now, what have y'all learned in your games versus GW's newest army?

Change of Heart

Welcome to IIWPA... on location! This morning yours truly is chasing the deceptively crafty turkey bird, while preparing for the tournament tomorrow. My two passions, hunting and 40k, all wrapped in one!

Well after some thought, and lengthy discussions with elthrai and parish.Stevo, I have decided for the style of missions being played, I need more scoring units, and durable ones at that. So I am thinkin that chaos is going to be the better choice, I mean what is better at being a hard as nails troop choice than a plague marine? I will be taking the same list as what I played in our recent battle report, but for those of you who don't remember-

2x MoN DPs w/ wings/warptime

Greater daemon

4x 7 man plague marine squads

...2 squads plasmad out, 2 meltad out, fist sages w/ combi weapons in rhinos

2x 2 strong oblits

Autocannon havoc squad w/ MoCU

1999pts

I think this is a tougher list, able to go 13 rounds with Ali if it has to. It's not as offensive, nor does it have the shots at range, but it has staying power. Well, I am gonna get back to hunting, y'all take it easy!

And Now Back to Your Regularly Scheduled Program

I know, I know, I haven't updated, and for that I apologize, some real life happened this week, and lots of stuff that I thought would never happen. It is official, The Grizz has been......Tainted By Xenos!!!! I know, please take a moment to pick your jaws off the floor and wipe away those tears of disbelief. It took me a little while to come to grips with it myself.

After 13 years of wargaming and 40k, I have never owned a non power armored army save my IG, but that was still humans/imperium. I have never even thought about it till the last week or so. I sold all my stuff on eBay, bought what I needed for my Chaos/Blood Angels, and had a little extra left over. So I began lookin at the possibility of starting a new army and started goin down the list.

CSM - Already have
Chaos Daemons - too expensive, not consistent enough
Blood Angels - Already Have
Vanilla Marines - Already have
Grey Knights - Just sold them
Witch Hunters - Used to have and sold
Space Wolves - love rules, hate model range/fluff
Black Templar - too similar to BA/Vanilla
IG - too broke to do what i want to do - Death Korps of Krieg
Dark Angels - .......no.
Sounds like Dark Angels

I Then came to the realization that if I wanted to play a new army, it would have to be...dare I say it...Xenos. So then I broke down the Xenos Races. I wanted something completely different to the armies i currently play, yet at the same time having a familiar feel. I couldn't play Orks, as that is Pariah.Stevo's army, and I play against them too much to want to play them myself.

There can be only one...
Necrons were marked off the list, with Eldar/DE/Tau never even making the list. Much like Highlander, at the end, there was only one - Tyranids. They were a horde, low armor, high tougness bugs, completely different to my current armies. Yet they felt strangely familiar, being assault based and short range. I began lookin at the model range and became as excited as a little boy who just discovered his first.....well, lets just say I was excited.

Every army I have ever owned I had some idea of how they worked. Oh ok that squad has bolters and power armor, lets put em in a transport and move em around. Not so with this new purchase. As I read through the codex, I became so lost, not knowing what any unit did or how to run them. I felt like I was starting 40k all over again. It scared the piss out of me, but at the same time, it excited me. I feel like I am looking at the game in a whole new way now. I received my first box of Gaunts yesterday, and got my first paint test done today. Tuesday, i should have sitting on my door step -

-2x Battleforces
-2x Trygons
-1x Carnifex

That gives me a pretty sizable chunk of stuff, and a lot to work on. So here comes the big question - Do you guys care about the Nids? I started this blog to talk about power armor, showcase my armies, and so on and so forth. Of course I never planned on havin a xenos army either. So, what I am asking you, the humble follower -

Do you want to see Tyranid Stuff on here, or keep it strictly SM/CSM stuff? Should I chronicle my rocky journey with this new army on IIWPA... or keep it straight Power Armor?
