THE FAKES Real Fiction 1995

Discogs

Real Fiction Review by Chris Nelson

The Fakes' Real Fiction works better as a manifesto project than a listening experience. The band is a Traveling Wilburys of the Olympia, WA, indie set, with primary players including Bikini Kill and Le Tigre singer Kathleen Hanna, Nation of Ulysses and Fucking Champs guitarist Tim Green, and Kicking Giant and the Need drummer Rachel Carns. Their sole album is designed as something of a rock opera, but without a lyric sheet (and with song titles apparently listed entirely out of running order), it's difficult to ascertain a story line. There is, however, a clear theme of confronting sexual abuse, its perpetrators, and the scars of survivors. "This is not a piece of art, this is my life," guest Billie Strain says with angry vulnerability at a spoken word piece. In another song, Hanna appropriates lyrics from the Charlie Rich hit "The Most Beautiful Girl" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" to draw an especially creepy portrait of a predator. Sonically, however, the album is less compelling, a mish-mash of ragtag punk with occasional touches of keyboard that play like an early blueprint for Hanna's later work in the guise of Julie Ruin. Still, the album's artwork is chock full of intriguing essays, statements of purpose, and pointed rock criticism, such as "why do all the indie boys like women who sing like angels or children?" Ideas, rather than execution, are key here.

THE CHAMPS Music For Films About Rock 1994

Artist Biography by Adam Bregman

A heavy metal trio that rarely performs in front of real metal audiences, the Fucking Champs are a peculiar outfit from San Francisco who hang with the indie rock crowd, while spitting out vile, perturbed hesher music. Former Nation of Ulysses guitarist Tim Green moved to San Francisco in 1995 and quickly hooked up with drummer Tim Soete and guitarist Josh Smith. With no bass and barely any vocals, the three of them formed the Champs The sound was pure, brutal riffage, with galloping power chords à la Judas Priest and occasional wanky bits. They released several homemade tapes with names like Triumph of the Air Elementals and Music for Films About Rock and a couple 7"s, all of which were difficult to find but available at their shows.

III In 1997, they came out with their magnum opus, III (released under the name C4AM95 for God knows what reason), a double album that raged most furiously. In addition to the relentless riffs spewing forth from III, the Fucking Champs came up with some fine, short electronic pieces with titles like "Now Is the Winter of Our Discoteque" and "Silent Night, Friendly Night." Their fondness for heavy rock and atmospheric electronics was shared by Trans Am, which sparked an ongoing friendship and collaboration. In 2000, the Fucking Champs returned with IV, a deft, equally abrasive follow-up. The following year, Double Exposure, an EP from the supergroup Trans Champs, arrived. Sticking with the Roman numeral gimmick, they came back two years later with the equally ugly V.

Gold The band went on hiatus soon after, and Smith left the group. During the recording of the next Trans Am/Fucking Champs collaboration, the Champs experimented with different lineups before recruiting Trans Am's Philip Manley to become their second guitarist. The Fucking Am's Gold, which also featured drumming by Jon Theodore of Golden and the Mars Volta, was released in 2004. The Fucking Champs also delved into soundtrack work, crafting pieces for commercials and the Sims video games, as well as for the Italian horror film La Foresta Della Morte and for the featurettes on the DVD of the Dawn of the Dead remake. The band returned in 2007 with, of course, VI, and a retooled lineup: Smith retired from the group to play with bands such as the Makes Nice and Drunk Horse, leaving Manley as the Fucking Champs' sole guitarist.

YOUNG GINNS Young Ginns 1998

Discogs

Hardcore punk project formed by members of Unwound and Nation Of Ulysses. The members were fueled by the sounds of hardcore punk and SST Records releases and reasoned that if young writers were called "Young Ginsburgs" then they'd call themselves "Young Ginns" (in reference to SST head honcho Greg Ginn). The band released one 7" on Gravity (2) Records before splitting. A discography CD (which included several unreleased songs) was released in 1998.

CUPID CAR CLUB Join Our Club... 1993

AllMusic Review by

After the breakup of Nation of Ulysses, Ian Svenonius, Steve Gamboa, and James Canty returned in a number of guises, Cupid Car Club, M.P. being one of them, before settling into the Make-Up. This 7" adds vocalist Kim Thompson to the mix; her presence revives this moribund way station featuring not just one revolutionary (once) subcultural teenage identity creation song but four! Four chances for kids to join the club. "Edge of the Envelope" is a cryptically angry tune saved by the interplay between Svenonius and Thompson. Is this what they mean by a call to action? The ultra-catchy "Vapor Rub Out" positions Svenonius as a kind of Screaming Jay Hawkins figure, substituting the "in" knowledge for personal magnetism but still working to cast a spell of sexual attraction. On the flip side, "Child Custody" touches on incendiary male/female relationships and "Grape Juice Plus" joins the long line of mystical revolutionary (twice) songs about soda. Although you gotta give props for the fourth Horseman being Fever and the outro chorus, "That's, that's, that's what I'm waiting for," which perfectly crystallizes the mid-'90s frozen revolutionary (three times!) impulse of punkish white youth. A group that will give you an identity in the name of a highly xenophobic (sub) culture -- yeah, that's what you're waiting for.
