Box art / display piece for Model Display Products.

One of a rare number of historical pieces I get to work on The Marauder is something special. The Marauder is a 36 part resin kit in 90mm scale the kit includes 2 heads, two helmets (pig helm or standard Viking helm) that fit either head and 3 right arms allowing the modeller to assemble the figure as 4 different figures either as a Marauding Viking or as a Saxon, weapon/arm options include axe, spear and sword.

I chose to go for the classic combo of a big shaggy bearded head with the pig helm and a great huge axe. This model gave me the opportunity to work with a verity of textures. The leathers were painted with Life Colour Leather Set which offers a fanatic range of warm and cold browns for a battered aged look. The wood was created with Scale 75's Wood set which are slightly harder to use but offer a breadth of rich colours it's hard to turn down.

Great secrecy surrounded them; they were chosen from the rank-and-file of the Death Guard by their Primarch personally for their skill at arms, fearlessness and proven endurance often being the sole survivor when the rest of their squad has perished.[5b] As a custom, they are still being listed as killed in action to hide their identities. In addition, they constantly wore helmets, hoods and masks to obscure their faces from all but Mortarion himself, even in death.[1a]
Deathshroud are clad in highly artificed Terminator armour that gave them a tall and barrel-chested appearance and they are armed with hand flamers with chem-munitions and like their master, they wield large power scythes known as Manreapers. They never strayed more than 49 paces from their Primarch.[1a][5b] An intimidating presence, they are capable of achieving a uniformity so perfect that when at rest they gave the impression of grand statues, and when in motion, of mechanical automata.[1c]  Mortarion was customarily attended on by two Deathshroud at any one time, but there may have been more.[1a][1b]
Deathshroud accompanied their lord to the Jorgall cylinder world during the Death Guard's assault on the Xenos starship.[1b]
Before an attack on the Knight world of MolechMortarion kills all seven Deathshroud bodyguards in a single stroke of his battle scythe Silenceinside the gene-vault aboard his flagship "Endurance" in order to feed the emerging daemon essence of Ignatius Grulgor, killed on Isstvan IIIby the the Life-eater virus.[4]
As a Daemon Prince of Nurgle, Mortarion was still accompanied by his Deathshroud ten thousand years later, notably when he confronted the Grey Knights at the Battle of Kornovin.[3]
