I paint small metal and plastic figures and rarely get to play with them. But that is fine with me.

Needing a little direction

Here’s a bit of a “State of the State/housecleaning” address.

*No hobby progress, so ignore this post if you’ve no interest.*

My hobby has been sorely lacking in direction of late. Recently, my efforts to paint a “bit of this” and a “bit of that” really hasn’t been satisfying my needs and I’ve been feeling somewhat in a hobby “Limbo”.
Well bugger that lark. Things need changing up around here.

In a previous post I mentioned that I have a large number of unfinished projects, these are in part due to a hobbyist’s nasty dose of “Shiny-itis” - Constantly getting distracted by new things and setting old unfinished projects aside in lieu. This utter lack of self-discipline is a rot in a hobbyist’s core and I’ve decided to set that nonsense aside and finish stuff.

O Inquisimunda.... How have I allowed you to lay idle so?

My number one game to paint for and play (And by “play” I mean, the maybe 3 times this year that I’ve been able to so far…) has been Bolt Action. I’d begun my dalliance into this fun beer’n’pretzels WW2 wargame with my Late War Winter Soviets and I’ve almost gotten to the point of being able to call my whole collection that mystical target of “Fully Painted”. (It’s true, it’s true.) With only:

1x Medic
2x Anti-Tank Rifle teams
1x Light Mortar Team
and the remainder (8 figs) of my Winter Vets boxed set to paint I’m so bloody close to being done with my current collection.

Old pic of my Soviets, though now missing recent additions like my newly painted Stuart and now finished half-track.

Once I’d chosen the Soviets as my primary force, I knew that I’d want to be able to offer games at my house for mates to play so went and purchased the entirety of a matching Winter themed Late War German force. Thus far I’ve only painted up my Hetzer Tank Hunter and the NCO of a Heer squad for them. What’s left are:

1x Lieutenant+Adjutant
10-man SS squad (Warlord Games SS-Charlamagne minis)
10-man Heer squad (Warlord Games Winter Heer minis - The NCO is painted as mentioned above.)
10-man Volks Grenadiers (Warlord Games plastics)
1x Medic (Warlord Games Winter)
1x MG42 Medium MG team (Warlord Games Winter)
1x Panzerschreck team (Warlord Games Winter)
1x Sdkfz 251/1D Half Track transport (Warlord Games plastic kit)

All of these are primed and based and just sat waiting for me to paint them. I’ve avoided getting back to them mainly due to having never painted WW2 Germans before and being irrationally intimidated by the prospect of painting Camo uniforms. Silly really.

Hetzer keeps Hetzin'.
The last part of this Winter project is the table itself. No point in my mind to start collecting Winter themed armies for home play and not have a likewise themed table to play on. So I bought a large piece of white felt, snowy trees from China and some lovely Eastern Front buildings by CharlieFoxtrotModels to use as terrain.

This being the 1st of August, that gives me five months to get this all painted and ready for gaming and will give me the chance to call my Winter shenanigans DONE. (And feel like I got something completed for once.) And there you have it – a self-imposed deadline and some much needed direction for my hobby, call it a "pledge" of sorts. Wish me luck!

(Now I just need to find someone to buy all my 15mm Flame of War Commonwealth to make room in my display case for all these Winter projects…)

6MMRPC #1 - Organisation

This 6-month challenge/pledge is proving to be an interesting muddle of many things. I've started making lists for each project, cataloging what models I have for each, then tallying them into a journal for later transferring into a blog post. Last count I am up to 16 distinctly different projects that need my attention. That's a possible 16 different whole armies, or skirmish sized group of miniatures. (And I didn't even catalog my entire rpg minis backlog; just added them as an entry with "X" amount done.*this also does not include any upcoming Kickstarter deliveries which will also be added as they arrive*)

Still, there's more than enough to keep me busy realistically until 2020 or something silly. :) Okay, maybe not that far ahead. But looking at the pile, there's more than enough that I find I'm actually far happier than I realised to hold off on any further purchases.

With all this in mind, I went on to start making Excel charts to keep track of all of these painting projects. So far, I've managed to prepare only the three main Flames of War projects I have on my table. Using the Draxian paint chart method here are the first three charts (These charts looked a lot clearer before I converted them to jpegs...?):

Now, these charts don't detail the exact number of minis involved, but I don't think that's all that important, it's the end result. I think seeing all these red boxes turn yellow then green on each project will really help keep me motivated to finish off each list. I'll also have a 4th chart made for the rest of my Flames of War pieces that don't really belong specifically to any army I currently play or own.

I'll be making more of these up for my other 28m projects too - my 40K Astra Militarum Imperial Guard project is the one I'm fearing the most.... O_o I didn't realise I had collected up so much infantry.

Whilst this post is about the 6 Month Mountain Reduction Painting Challenge, I'll not claim it as this week's (The Challenge officially started yesterday.) post, so keep an eye open for a proper job post in a couple days.

Lastly, those missing German platoons and pieces I mentioned in my last post that were needed to fill out my Arnheim list? Well, I went and ordered them from Lotus Vault and they are on their way. Now I have NO excuses for getting my wallet out for new models.

Three weeks... And a pledge!

Oof... What a lazy sod I am.

Well, there's been gentle nothing going on my end of late. Between my wife's birthday, a visit from my olds from the UK and a general lack of enthusiasm either side of that, my hobby room actually looks clean and tidy right now, not a hobbyist's workshop like usual.

Saying that, for her birthday, I did decide to gift her something I.... um... not made per se, more.... worked on. Better than just buying something off a shelf or website, right? So when Hasslefree Miniatures released the resin master for their Kirsten miniature, I had to get it as it's a very close lookalike to her. The mini when it arrived, was a beautiful crisp one-piece sculpt and had next to no mold lines. Painting so far has been really fun, though I'm not finished yet. The skin is a little dark still and I'd like to work lots more on the Hello Kitty design on her shirt.

Here's a few WIP pictures of the figure - let me know what you think:

Now, the title says "Pledge". Here's the details.

Over on the Dead Lead Project and Chris' Miniature Woes blogs, Deserter and Myincubliss have both started off a 6 month pledge to help get their bare model count down (Greatly) and not purchase new stuff in the meantime. I too suffer from the affliction of shiny-new-things, whilst my own pile sits largely unloved, so I've decided it would be a great idea to follow suit, just for myself. Below are the rules per the aforementioned blogs, plus an extra one I added.

Beginning 1st September 2014...

1. No purchasing of new miniatures, EXCEPT if you use a joker card.  Like in a deck of cards, you get two jokers to use on a figure purchase during the six months of the challenge.  Could be a blister pack, an ebay bundle, or a single figure...you can't splurge.

2.  Gifts do not count against you. Christmas and or birthdays etc. Also, if you're given gift cards by your hobby illiterate family or friends, you can without penalty use them on anything you want miniatures wise.

3.  Paints, terrain (or materials), and other hobby supplies do not apply to the no purchasing rule.

4.  At least one hobby related blog post and/or Instagram update a week.  If you Instagram, be sure to hashtag your pic with #6MMRPC. *I don't even know how to hashtag, so no Instagram shenanigans for me*

5.  Zombtober will be part of the 6 month challenge so, Zombie related stuff during October is ENCOURAGED!

6. Along with the above 5 regular rules, I WILL allow me to purchase the remaining outstanding  models to complete my Flames of War German "Arnhem" force, limited only to:

a. Latest Plastic Panzergrenadiers + halftracks boxed set
b. SS-Heavy Machinegun Platoon
c. 1 x Panzer ivH tank

I think I can do this and the regular posting of at least one post a week will make this blog a little more lively and interesting again. There's plenty to get working on and I think I'll also make a list of all the projects I need to tackle and also that I've completed as I go along. (Something tells me a Draxian Painting Chart [tm] may well be in order.)

O and one last thing - check out this new board game on Kickstarter. Bruce Lee minis game! And the mini's look SOOOO good! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/682539325/dragon-tides

(Yeah... I went and pledged.... well - it's not September 1st yet, right? :P)
