Sarah Palin accessorizes

Sarah Palin is very unconventional and that may go down very well with her supporters. As a general rule, a politician's appearance shouldn't be distracting. Men don't have much choice and don't stray from suits and ties for public appearances, occasionally dispensing with the tie and jacket for informal events.

Women in politics tend to chose neutral attire and avoid too many adornments.

A political celebrity who's still considering a presidential run makes very different choices from the women shown above. If she managed to get to the White House, foreign leaders would have to be excused for being unable to pay attention to the actual topics in their discussions with the new leader of the free world...

People dress for the job and women politicians prefer to have a businesslike, unfussy image. Sarah Palin wears layer upon layer of "meaningful" jewellery.

As somebody who has nothing meaningful to say, I suppose she has to let her adornments do the talking...

Sarah Palin, same old words, two different styles on the same day

Sarah Palin did three interviews yesterday.

Between 9 and 11 am (Alaska time) she talked to Megyn Kelly on America Live, where she bashed feminists in general and Gloria Steinem in particular:

America Live, with Megyn Kelly

Then she changed into a more fetching outfit (???) to appear on Lou Dobbs Tonight (around 3 pm in Alaska), to talk about the economy:

Lou Dobbs Tonight

I think she got tired of sitting in front of the fireplace and moved to the window for the Greta show (5 to 7 pm Alaska time), where she indulged in her favourite activity. Yes, bashing President Obama:

On the Record with Greta Van Susteren

She more or less said how dare Obama go on a ten-day vacation, in Martha Vineyard of all places, yadda yadda (too elitist).

That's rich, coming from a woman who's been on a very well paid vacation for over two years!

I don't understand why, having been fairly well dressed in the morning, with a grown-up hairstyle, she then decided to change into a last frontier jacket, bad hair and completed the look with a big crucifix for the later interviews.

The inanity and vitriol of her words are consistent, but her choice of clothes, hair and accessories is very weird.

Remember this one?

[In the process of watching the videos frame-by-frame I noticed that she was doing the tongue thing very quickly, as if she had remembered NOT to do it and then checking herself. Maybe she caught my tongue videos on youtube and decided not to give me further opportunities to expand my collection of tongue shots? I'm sure she'll indulge again when she goes on Hannity, that's when she can't control the thing... Ha ha!]

Sarah Palin's fashion tips for feet and other inappropriate stuff

Does anybody remember seeing a serious female politician going out in public wearing anything similar to the following?

No? I wonder why...

Now imagine the person above welcoming a foreign leader to the White House wearing the leopard skin or the enormous shoes, for example.

Seriously, how presidential is that?

This topic is almost too silly and it's embarrassing to write about it, but remember that this woman applied for a trademark of her name and likeness. She considers herself a brand. What does this brand tells us about her? What does she have to offer?

Can she articulate any intelligent ideas and solutions for the country's woes? Can she offer anything beyond fridge magnet slogans as policy statements?

No.

What's left? Her style. Would any 47-year-old woman (who wishes to be taken seriously) constantly facing cameras and large groups of people take any fashion tips from her?

"If you don't love America, then why don't you get the hell out?"

With no ideas and no style, her brand amounts to absolutely nothing, unless ignorance and immaturity are now fashionable, desirable attributes.

There are many eccentric politicians all over the world. Some very famous statesmen were undoubtedly eccentric and departed from the norm, be it in dress style or how they spoke or presented themselves. But they had ideas, they were intellectual giants. They could afford to be different.

A person's appearance doesn't necessarily reflect his or her mind.

Sarah Palin is very far from being an intellectual anything and her image corresponds exactly to her level of maturity and seriousness. Compared to other unconventional politicians, she comes across as a cheap sideshow.

She wants to be seen as unconventional, but all she achieves is to look inappropriate. Her behaviour is also inappropriate, as when she was glued to her BlackBerry during government meetings. Many of her tweets are inappropriate. The same goes for the snarky remarks about Michelle Obama's campaign for healthy eating. The references to "limp, impotent, lacking cojones" male politicians and members of the press speak for themselves.

Sarah was wearing the skull boots while walking around in Homer, where she came across a teacher with a banner that said "Worst Governor Ever." As if the boots weren't bad enough, Sarah and her family proceeded to bully the teacher. Inappropriate attire coupled with inappropriate behaviour, is that her brand?

One thing is to be unconventional, another is to be cheap and rude. If one chooses to look and act differently from others in the same position, this person would have to be incredibly brilliant and every word coming out of her mouth worth quoting.

As it happens, Sarah Palin is quoted for her word salad, her poor grasp of her country's history and so on. Both her appearance and her pronouncements are the stuff of comedy.

The media must be deaf and blind if they can't see what a sad caricature of a politician Sarah Palin really is... an empty shell.

Sarah Palin's chosen style and behaviour don't go with politics at all. Every time she opens her mouth, the stupid rolls out. So why is everybody asking if she's going to run? This classless pseudo-politician in the White House? That would be the day I'll give up on American politics for good.

Sarah Palin's dress sense - past and present

I'm in a frivolous mood and have been a bit distracted. As I have several photos of Sarah Palin wearing some fantastic clothes, I decided to embark on one of my silly photo comparisons.

Let's start with the good old days when Sarah Palin chose her own clothes, which brought us this great selection of very diverse attire, not always elegant and sometimes not terribly appropriate:

Her choices then were not Vogue material, but I feel we could see the real Sarah Palin, a more genuine version of the one presented to the nation during the campaign. I read somewhere that Alaskans don't make too much of a fuss about what they wear, they just want to feel comfortable. There is something refreshing about the governor feeling and acting the same way.

When the RNC dressed Sarah Palin and took care of her hair and make-up, the results were quite different, her image was carefully managed and I think she looked good. They made the most of her natural beauty.

Some expert advice and a lot of other people's money can work miracles!

Now Sarah Palin is a multi-millionaire and has a team of aides. Apparently, this team doesn't include a stylist or a personal shopper:

She seems very pleased with herself. But she lost much of her looks trying to improve them. Whereas before she became nationally famous she looked fresh and not affected, now her preocupation with her own image shows and the results don't match her ambitions. Her taste in clothes and accessories has not improved and she chose the wrong image for the job she desires.

Sarah Palin looked happier and more relaxed in Alaska. We were happier and more relaxed when she was in Alaska. Since 2008 we have been affected by her transformation and after she left Alaska behind to pursue fame and fortune on the national and international stages, her inner ugliness has extended to her critics as well, we've been infected. Sometimes we show very nasty signs of this terrible affliction and hurt each other nearly as much as she hurts the civil political discourse...

Please treat this as a kind of (political?) open thread, how long can anybody discuss Sarah Palin's clothes?
