Via the Las Vegas Sun, law professor Noah Feldman explores why ICE is being allowed to run rampant over the legal rights of immigrants–properly documented or not–and American citizens.

He is somewhat less than sanguine. Here’s a snippet:

. . . the ICE problem forces us to acknowledge the limits of our legal and political systems. Our norms and expectations are being shattered by an overreaching executive. So far, the judiciary isn’t coming to the rescue, and the legislative branch seems not to care.

I commend the piece to your attention.

Short Attention Span Theatrics 0

We keep hearing claims that each new stunt by the Trump maladministration is a “distraction” to make us forget the last stunt.

I don’t buy it, that is, I don’t buy that a worst thing is a good strategy to take attention from a worse thing to take attention from a bad thing and so on. Rather, I think that it’s a collection of lots of bad things happening at the same time, so many bad things it boggles the mind. To quote Steve M.,

So what appear to be distractions are just evidence that the zealots, and their semi-informed leader, are in a hurry to remake the world in their image.

The Portland Oregonian reports on the Trump maladministration’s mean for the sake of mean. Here’s a tiny taste of the terrorism; follow the link for a big indigestible serving of sadism.

The unending stream of unverified social reports and rumors has deepened anxiety and caused a panic paralysis that has led some families – including those with legal status or who have U.S. citizen children – to shelter at home and abandon regular activities, said Jairo Rodriguez, a spokesperson with Centro Cultural of Washington County, a nonprofit that for more than five decades has provided social services, education and cultural programs to Latinos in the region.

“People have stopped going to work, stopped taking their kids to school, stopped going to their doctor’s appointments,” said Rodriguez.

She thought she was going home to surprise her family on her Thanksgiving vacation from university.

She never made it.

Afterthought:

Mean for the sake of mean certainly appears to be a Republican family value.

“History Does Not Repeat Itself, but It Often Rhymes”* 0

A century and a half ago, men dressed up in masks to terrorize, capture, torture, and sometimes kill folks whose skin was darker than theirs.

And today, men are again dressing up in masks to terrorize, capture, torture, and sometimes kill folks whose skin is darker than theirs.

A Notion of Immigrants 0

Farron points out that Donald Trump has been quite happy to hire immigrants to work at his resorts even as he has derided them to attract support from racists and bigots (my words, not Farron’s).

At The Charlotte Observer, Nick Sullivan explains why Stephen Miller’s claim that almost 15% of Charlotte school students are illegal aliens is a flat-out li–not supported by an honest interpretation of the facts.

Rick Strom reports on the fellow who boasted that he called ICE on a local business, resulting in legal immigrants being detained in ICE concentration camps. At the very end, Rick expresses his thoughts as to the fellow’s motivation, and, frankly (I do everything frankly), I think he nailed it.

And, in more news to the American Stasi . . . .

At the Idaho State Journal, Mike Murphy looks at the Trump maladministration’s military attacks on Venezuelan fishing boats and offers a suggestion:

Mr. Trump can call it the Department of War if he wants, but the Department of War (Crimes) may prove more accurate.
