The Bloody Pit #219 - NYOKA AND THE TIGERMAN (1942)

Chris Herzog returns to the show to discuss one of the best of Republic Pictures’ serials. NYOKA AND THE TIGERMEN (1942) is a fantastic example of the chapterplay form but gets forgotten when people talk about the best the studio produced. Revisiting this action-packed adventure proves that it deserves to be mentioned as one of the finest serials ever made. Where is the Blu-Ray?

We discuss the cast in some detail and relate a few behind the scenes anecdotes. Since this is one of only eight serials lead by a female character, we spend some time on how Nyoka both conforms to and breaks from the usual conventions of the format. It’s nice to have an action hero woman mixing it up in the fights and killing bad guys rather than finding new ways to be knocked unconscious! The lead villain is a woman as well giving us a driven Queen Vultura bent on destroying all who stand in her way. Dangerous females indeed! We also get the future Lone Ranger as one of the good guys ably assisted by the excellent stunt team that Republic always used. They will make you believe in leaping over tables and from great heights. And I can’t stop myself from pointing out how many members of the cast show up in various Poverty Row horror films with Bela Lugosi. Sorry about my fixations but you really should see the trainwreck that is BLACK DRAGONS (1942). And did we mention the gorilla named Satan?

If you have any comments or suggestions about the show thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We love hearing from you and hope you enjoy the podcast.

Video - ZORRO AND THE THREE MUSKETEEERS (1963)

Here we have the next film Adrian and I will be talking about on Wild, Wild Podcast. This unlikely combination of heroes works far better than I would have ever thought possible and the movie is a lot of adventurous fun! The version being shown here is an assembly from multiple prints that seemingly presents the entire thing - maybe for the first time. The source material is variable in quality but even when the picture drops into black & white for a couple of scenes the story remains compelling. Enjoy!

Trailers From Hell - THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1973)

The recent news that this film and its immediate sequel THE FOUR MUSKETEERS are coming to Blu-Ray from the Criterion Collection has me excited to revisit these wonderful adventures. There was a time in my youth when I watched them both several times each year but it has been a long time since I've ridden the road with these colorful characters. If you've never experienced what I consider to be the best version of the novel ever brought to the screen, there is no time like now!

Wild, Wild Podcast - THE BLACK DUKE (1963)

Who is the Black Duke? Who is the Red Carnation? Who is actually the hero of this film? These are just some of the questions that may or may not get answered in this new episode, where your two intrepid podcasting musketeers delve ever further into the forgotten realms of cult Italian cinema.

After a winter spent besieging castles and fighting our enemies, Adrian and I are back with a new season of forgotten Italian films. Dubbed "Rapiers and Ruffles", these are medieval adventure films which had a surge of popularity off the back of the success of the "Sword and Sandal" films of the early sixties. So stick your jerkin on, grab your sword and jump onto the nearest available horse; this is going to be a long campaign.

Poster Art for Disney's 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA (1954)

It is a true shame that this classic adventure film is only available on Blu-Ray directly from Disney through their club. I'm sure that they could sell hundreds of thousands of copies if it could be more easily purchased. But I'm not a Disney employee so what do I know?
